SOLITUDE
I am a Catholic priest commied to a celibate way of life. Like many Catholic priests, I
live alone. My home is the Rectory at St Catherine’s in Penrith next to the church. July
marked my tweneth anniversary of ordinaon to the priesthood. For over half of
that me I have shared a Presbytery/Rectory with other priests and this has been a
posive experience.
In my home at St Catherine’s Rectory, life is busy not solitary; in many ways you are
living over the shop. There is Mass on weekdays for which half a dozen to twenty
people could be present, so there is daily contact with folks. The parish office is
staffed each morning with volunteers, taking phone calls, responding to emails and
dealing with administrave tasks. I say to these most helpful people: your job is to keep me out of the office!
In term me, the day is punctuated by the wonderful sound of children in the
playground next door, at our parish school. It is uncanny to hear the silence during the school holidays! It is for these children, their families and for the school staff that
the ministry of the priest exists. The ministry also exists for the elderly, the sick, the
dying, the bereaved, the couple preparing for marriage, the new-born baby, the growing family, the single person, the worker and the student.
In short, my ministry exists for PEOPLE, so I am rarely alone. Moments of solitude are
welcome, but are a scarce reality. For me, solitary mes revive the Spirit, especially
the me for prayer, and this can be easily compromised by the simplest of demands.
To summarise, the ministry of a diocesan priest follows the example of Jesus living an
acve ministry among the people, but taking me to be alone with the Father. ‘ But Jesus himself would oen slip away to the wilderness and pray’ (Luke 5:16).Father John

What to do in the garden in September
This month’s (mely ps) What to do and what to sow
September is here, and there’s plenty to be done while you’re outside enjoying the last of the
year’s warmth. Harvesng crops will keep you busy this month. And there’s plenty of work to
do dying and maintaining plants and equipment.
Keep camellias and rhododendrons well watered at this me of year to ensure that next
year's buds develop well.
Divide herbaceous perennials as the weather cools and water in the new divisions well
Cut bean and pea plants away at ground level when they have finished cropping. Leave the
roots which will slowly release nitrogen back into the soil as they break down.
In the greenhouse/indoors Surface-sow euphorbia seeds now in trays indoors
Sow dierama seed now on the surface of moist compost. Keep in a cool greenhouse over
winter .
Sow calendula seeds in pots now and keep in a cold frame, for fruity colour from early
summer next year.
Sow violas in a cold frame to plant out in the spring.
Sow aquilegia, aconitum and hollyhocks in a cold frame now
From the Armchair
Order your sweet pea seeds to start in cold frames in October
Buy in autumn onion sets for early summer harvesng next year
Order rhubarb crowns and asparagus crown to plant next month
Pondering from the pong shed
Talent is God-given, so be humble. God's gis are not on shelves one above the other so that the taller you grow the easier you reach them. They are on shelves one below the other so
that by bending lower you get his best. Jeremiah declares, "The Lord says, 'Wise men should
not boast of their wisdom, or strong men of their strength, or rich men of their wealth. If
anyone wants to boast, he should boast that he knows and understands me" (Jeremiah 9:23-24 Paul asks “Who made you to be superior to others? Didn’t God jive you everything you
have? Well then how can you boost as if what you have were not a gi (1 Corinthians 4:7)?
Fame is man-given, so be grateful. Flaery is like perfume: it is meant to be sniffed, not
swallowed. It quickly becomes addicve. Pride enslaves us to the opinions of others. What
they think controls our lives.
Conceit is self-given, so be careful. Remember the steamboat: it had a six foot boiler and a
nine foot whistle. Every me the whistle blew it took so much steam the engine stopped.
Remember the frog who saw the ducks flying south for the winter. When he asked them why,
they said, "Because it is warmer there." He said, "I'd like to do that too." So he found a sck
and asked two ducks to take each end in their mouth while he held on with his mouth in the
middle. It worked! Then as they flew over Caltech an engineering student saw them and said,
"That's amazing. I wonder who thought of that." The frog answered, "I did!
"Pride has two seasons: a forward spring and an early fall. "Pride Goes before destrucon and
a haughty spirit before a fall" (Proverbs 16:18)
Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God and he will li you up in his good me

Garden Party Maple Cro – August 2019
It was a Garden Party on a Sunday aernoon. The garden looked very colourful and the new
pond was doing well. However it was raining and wet – not what was planned! Actually it did not maer too much as a marque had been arranged and we were all able to sit at
tables under cover and keep dry.
Hosng the aernoon at their home Maple Cro, Skelton were David and Rachel Jones, The
first class tea and drinks were almost over generous.
The event was well aended and had a large raffle and a quiz on gardens (which was won by
Jim Mills). At the end Jim thanks our hosts and the rest of the team that had organized the
aernoon which was a great success and most enjoyable despite the low temperatures and
rain. £370 were received to go towards the funds of St Michael's Church in the village.

Christ & St Mary’s ArmathwaiteOpen Gardens – A belated ‘thank you’ to everyone who contributed in anyway towards making the Open Gardens a huge success this year. The sun shone and lots of people came
and supported the event which raised £2005. This sum has been divided equally between
the Old School Hall and the Church.
Tent Poles - Has anyone got a couple of “spare” tent poles hiding in their garage or shed which would fit the gazebo which we use for selling the ckets at Open Gardens?
Unfortunately a large gust of wind got under the tent during the Sunday aernoon and two
poles were badly damaged. We could do with replacing two poles one which is labelled
“2A” and measures 1m in length; 20mm in diameter at the ends and 22mm diameter along
its length, the second is not labelled but measures 1m in length and 22mm diameter along
its enre length. Anyone who thinks they may have suitable spare poles please contact Sue
Bonsor 016974-72054.
Food Bank - The church is acvely collecng items for the Carlisle Food Bank. Donaons can
be le at any me in the box at the back of church or at 3 or 8 Mill Brow. Please help
support this much-needed aid in the locality.
Have you got hidden skills? Would you be willing to take the minutes of a meeng four
mes a year? Meengs last approx. one and a half hours although somemes less. Ideally
the minutes would need to be produced within a week of the meeng but apart from that
we are quite a friendly undemanding bunch who meet as the Parochial Church Council of
Armathwaite and Ainstable. If you think you may be able help us please contact Sue Bonsor
Greengs cards -We have some blank greengs cards for sale in church depicng the new
window created by Phil Duon. The cards are priced at £1.50 each and are available at the
back of church near the wallhanging.
WANTED: Apples, Apples and more apples. Eaters or Cookers. We are collecng donaons for Armathwaite apple day, 5th October, either bring them
along in the day and receive a free bole of freshly squeezed juice (please bring a bole).

The Revd Phillip Dorling's 'Goodbye' – August 2019
The Revd Phillip Dorling, rector of the seven churches in the Inglewood Group, is leaving
Cumbria to take up a posion at Scargill House at Kelewell in Yorkshire. This is a
Chrisan Retreat, Holiday and Conference Centre, part of the Scargill Movement.
Jacquie, his wife (who has also been an important person in the parish not only as a
musician) and his two children, Freddie and Grace go with him. they leave with all our
good wishes. He has been with us for six and a half years and we shall miss them all.
The seven PCCs organized a lovely 'goodbye' evening for the family, thanks to Lord and
Lady Inglewood, it took place in the Rose Garden at Huon-in-the-Forest. Thanks to the ladies at Huon the sit-down dinner was excellent, the weather was also perfect. Phillip was presented with a small memento from each church to remind him of a few unique,
and somemes bizarre, incidences which had happened in each one - this was all great fun. A cheque from everyone was also presented.
His final service was last Sunday at St Michael's Skelton – a sad but at the same me an
important occasion for each of us to be able to say goodbye. The service included
contribuons from individuals of the different congregaons – the music was provided
by the Revd Brian Dawson, Jacquie and Dinah George. Following the Gospel reading of
the parable of the rich farmer and how he planned to store his wealth: Phillip preached
about the 'I' / 'thou' relaonships as he called them and the importance of sharing,
respecng and loving, especially in a rural community.
Later there was a bring-and-share lunch which was excellent and allowed each of us to
say a personal 'goodbye', 'thank you' and 'God's speed' to each.

Skelton School News – August 2019 The Leavers' Assembly in July saying 'goodbye' to the group of 13 Year Sixes moving on
to Secondary educaon was a happy (but sad) occasion.
The Autumn Term will start on Wednesday 4th September and runs for six and a half
weeks l the October half term break on the week of 21/25th October.
There are no changes in the teaching and other staff at the moment, the buildings are in
reasonable order so we look forward to a new year and welcoming new children. The
number on the roll will be in the high 80s.

Toppins – July 2019We Rescue, Care and Rehome. This is the moo of the Animal Rescue Centre, a
purpose built setup situated at Moorlands Head Farm, Newbiggin, Temple Sowerby.
The Manager, Sarah Bean and a Trustee, Jenny Whiield were the speakers at the July
meeng of the Toppins group at Skelton.
The talk did not quite go to according to plan, however, as there were technical
difficules with the equipment and the special film, prepared for the occasion, could
not be shown. But the evening was a great success as there were many animal photos
available, and a unique story lay behind each and everyone. Through these stories we
learned how the charity was managed and run. Further, there was so much
enthusiasm and hands on experience to impart, one could not be less than highly
Engaged throughout the presentaon.
This is a charity; it receives no Government money and relies enrely on the public for
all its funds. Its buildings are good and up-to-date but the care and service given to all its inmates, costs a lot of money. There has to be staff there 24 hours a day to clean
and supervise the animals and arrange for adopons, animal supervision and
interacons with the public – then there are buildings to maintain and many money
raising events to oversee.
There are two houses on the spot for the manager and assistant manager. They are
helped by another full-me member of staff, a few part-mers and a number of
volunteers. There is also a dog behaviourist and, of course, medical help which has to
be called in as and when required. The Centre caters for dogs and cats, also a few
ferrets and rabbits.
The centre costs £17,000 a month to run so money raising is a constant priority. There
is an Eden Animal Rescue shop in Great Dockray, Penrith; this run by volunteers who
do a very good job. Otherwise there is membership of the charity, regular donaons
and a number of different money raising acvies. Also there is a small team of
volunteers do a splendid job actually handling the animals individually and cleaning out
their homes – these are joined by a few students from Newton Rigg who go there to
gain praccal hands on experience with animals.
It was a most interesng evening. It is always special when the speakers are so
enthusiasc. Sarah said she will return to show us the film that we should have seen!
In June the group met at Deer Rudding, Hesket New Market, for a fascinang tour of
the gardens and then onto lunch at Mae's Restaurant at Uldale. The weather was good
and it was a lovely day out thanks to Stella Jackson who arranged it all.

Armathwaite residents are mourning the loss of oers and kingfishers sighted at
Armathwaite Place over the last 12 months. The new owners of Armathwaite Place had
made efforts to protect vulnerable natural habitats by erecng temporary fencing and
signs to exclude the river bank from dogs (on two and four legs!) but vandals have
repeatedly torn down the fence so that numerous dogs and humans have had
access to the river bank nesng sites.
Following a visit from The Rivers Trust earlier this year we decided to take steps to
protect the nesng sites (which are on Private property) but local vandals have seen fit
both to trespass on private land and threaten vulnerable animals. Meanwhile
Armathwaite Place is also trying to encourage red squirrels back to the village but it is
very distressing that investment in local wildlife preservaon is so easily wrecked by a
handful of an-social vandals who assume it is their right to go where they chose and
cause damage to other peoples’ property.
This has resulted in the loss to all users of the footpath the opportunity to observe
wonderful animals in their natural environment from a safe distance. Meanwhile
Mountain Bikers connue to ride over footpaths where responsible dog owners are
walking their dogs on a loose lead and running the risk of injury to children, adults and
dogs alike. Bikers know perfectly well that they are not allowed to cycle on public
footpaths but they seem to feel entled to ride roughshod over the enjoyment and
safety of legimate walkers of all ages.
So if locals know the identy of these vandals please would they remind them of the
damage they do by their selfish, irresponsible and illegal acvies. Alternavely if
walkers observe these vandals and can photograph them as they trespass or damage
the environment perhaps they can be named and shamed. Something needs to be done
if we are to protect our lovely environment in conjuncon with private land owners or
Forest Enterprise to preserve the reasonable enjoyment of all in our villages. It is a great
shame that village children will not be able to study a family of oers growing up on
their doorstep or seeing kingfishers in flight; It is possible that this is the fault of a single
arrogant and ignorant local resident. Let us hope we will all be ready to welcome back
red squirrels when they have a safe environment in which to raise their young and that
at some future me another family of oers will feel safe enough to rear a family on the
river at Armathwaite.

Welcome Gary!
Members of the Inglewood Group of churches joined a large congregaon at St Andrew’s
Church, Penrith, recently to welcome Canon Gary Cregeen as the new Penrith Mission
Area Leader and Penrith Mission Community Leader.
In 2016 Cumbria’s Church Leaders from the Salvaon Army, Church of England, Methodist
and United Reformed Churches signed a Covenant Declaraon to work more closely with
each other. Intrinsic to this vision is the seng up of Mission Communies across the
whole of Cumbria. Mission Communies are communies of Chrisans coming together
as the Church of Christ across tradions, congregaons and denominaons to share the
Good News about Jesus Christ in word and deed. Across the Penrith Mission Area, the
East of Eden Mission Community has already been launched and Methodist & Anglican
colleagues work as a team across that area. The Penrith Mission Community, serving the
town itself and working very closely with Churches Together in Penrith will be launched
on Sunday 29th September. While the area to the west of Penrith, stretching from
Paerdale to Ivegill, will be a key aspect of Gary’s inial work as the Church considers the
most effecve, sustainable use of clergy resources and the best ways to enable church
growth.
Canon Cregeen is Cumbrian born and bred. Prior to ordinaon in 2000 he worked in
industry and local government. For the last 7 years Gary has served as a Team Rector in
Barrow-in-Furness, where he was also Rural Dean of Barrow, Barrow Mission Community
Leader and Chaplain to the Mayor of Barrow. Previously he was Vicar of Scotby, Cotehill
and Cumwhinton, and Rural Dean of Brampton. In 2014 he was appointed Honorary
Canon of Carlisle Cathedral.
Gary, who is married to Julie, a Senior Teaching Assistant, said, “It is with joy and
ancipaon that Julie and I have made the move to Penrith and I am very much looking
forward to serving the Penrith Mission Area and as Penrith Mission Community Leader.
We have moved to this area with a deep love of Jesus Christ and a knowledge of the
transforming effect a personal relaonship with Jesus can have on individuals and
communies.”
Since 2016 there has been huge progress in local Churches working together closer than
ever. The service at the end of June was an opportunity to celebrate the ‘journey’ so far,
to recognise the call Chrisan’s share and to commit to mov
ing forward together to ensure ‘every person in Cumbria of all ages and backgrounds will have an opportunity to discover more of God and God's purpose for their lives, so that they will discover more of Jesus and the Good News and become followers of Jesus within a Chrisan community.’
Following the departure of the Revd Philip Dorling Gary will be
working closely with the Inglewood Group of Churches, to
determine the needs and opportunies for Chrisan ministry
in the area and to provide support and encouragement in
