Welcome!

The Practice for the TOEIC® Test for Interchange series is an innovative effort betweenCambridge University Press and DuocUC. It is designed to integrate all levels of the DuocUCEnglish Program with support materials developed specifically to deliver better academic resultsas measured by the TOEIC® Test.

About the DuocUC English ProgramLed by TEFL-certified EFL instructors, the DuocUC English Program emphasizes development of all four language skills (listening, reading, writing, and speaking) via a communicative approach carried out in small groups. The Program offers students the opportunity to improve their English language skills as a work-force competency, while systematically preparing for the TOEIC® Test.

About the TOEIC® Listening and Reading TestThe TOEIC® Listening and Reading Test is a test of international English that is taken every year by approximately 4.5 million students and business professionals in different countries around the world. The two-hour test includes 200 multiple-choice questions and is divided into two sections: Listening and Reading. There are 100 questions in each section.

In addition to being an internationally recognized benchmark examination, the TOEIC® Test is used by the DuocUC English Program to measure individual progress and to provide access to an internationally recognized certificate for all participants.

Practice for the TOEIC® Test for Interchange provides contextualized review of specific TOEIC® skills for each unit. Opportunities to practice all skills are covered within this booklet. The complete TOEIC® Test has the following parts:

ListeningPart 1: PhotographsPart 2: Question-ResponsePart 3: ConversationsPart 4: Talks

Reading Part 5: Incomplete Sentences Part 6: Text CompletionPart 7: Reading Comprehension

This material was designed as a complementary tool for both teachers and students. It is meant to enhance classroom focus, student language production, TOEIC® Test performance, and – most important of all – the engagement of the entire class in the art and science of learning a foreign language.

Good luck!

Questions 13–16 refer to this article.

Personality TypesWhat makes people the way they are? Why do some people get angry easily, others always seem to be in a good mood, while others are often depressed? The early Greek doctor Hippocrates thought that personality was linked to the fluids in the human body: the blood, the bile, the black bile, and the phlegm. These fluids were called the four humors. Hippocrates believed that inside each person, one kind of body fluid was dominant and that this fluid – or humor – caused a tendency toward a particular kind of behavior.

If the blood (sanguinis) was dominant, the person was sanguine, or cheerful, and willing to help others. If the yellow bile of the liver (called choler) was the most important, the person would be irritable and bad-tempered. If the person was often sad and depressed, the black liquid of the spleen and kidneys (melan-choler) was blamed. And the person who had too much phlegm (the thick mucus of the nose and throat) was calm and level-headed.

Today we know that personality results from a combination of lifestyle and natural factors, and has little or nothing to do with body fluids. However, even today the words remain: humorous, sanguine, choleric, melancholy, phlegmatic. Although psychologists no longer use them, they have become part of the common vocabulary – with some changes, of course. For example, saying a person is humorous means that the person laughs and makes others laugh, from the idea of having “good” humor.

13. According to the article, what did the early Greeks know?

(A) There are different fluids in the human body. (B) Everyone shows the same basic behavior. (C) People who laugh a lot are humorous. (D) Personality is the result of lifestyle factors.

14. What was humor for the early Greeks?

(A) A body part (B) A natural fluid (C) A personality type (D) An internal organ

15. Which fluid did Hippocrates believe was dominant in a happy person?

(A) Blood (B) Bile (C) Black bile (D) Phlegm

16. Which word probably describes someone who is practical and doesn’t get excited easily?

(A) Sanguine (B) Choleric (C) Melancholy (D) Phlegmatic

2 READING (Part 7: Reading Comprehension)

Directions: You will read two articles. The articles are followed by several questions. Select the best answer for each question. Then circle the letter (A), (B), (C), or (D).

Questions 9–13 refer to the following article.

The Truth About LyingMost of us are taught to believe that lying is wrong. But it seems that everyone tells lies – well, not big lies, but what we call “white lies.” Telling white lies isn’t really that bad. Most of the time, people do it because they want to protect a friendship or someone’s feelings. Some studies suggest that the average person lies about seven times a day. Here are some ways and reasons why.

• Lying to hide something:People often lie because they want to hide something from someone. For example, a son doesn’t tell his parents that he’s dating a girl because he doesn’t think they’ll like her. Instead, he says he’s going out with his friends.

• Lying to make an excuse:Sometimes people lie because they don’t want to do something. For example, someone invites you to a party. You think it will be boring, so you say you’re busy.

• Lying to make someone feel good:Often we stretch the truth to make someone feel good. For example, your friend cooks dinner for you, but it tastes terrible. Do you say so? No. You probably say, “Mmm, this is delicious!”

• Lying to avoid sharing bad news:Sometimes we don’t want to tell someone bad news. For example, you have just had a very bad day at work, but you don’t want to talk about it. So if someone asks you about your day, you just say everything was fine.

Body Language: What does it say?Much of what we say to others is communicated not only through words, but also through body language. This includes our posture, facial expressions, and gestures. Because body language plays such a significant role in communication, it’s important to know what your body is telling other people. If your words say one thing, but your body says another, the person you’re speaking to is more likely to believe the message your body is communicating. Here are some examples of body language and its meanings. (Note that these meanings are for North America. Interpretations may be a bit different in other cultures.)

A smile is usually a sign of friendliness and interest. However, some people smile just to be polite. To get another clue from people’s faces, notice how they use their eyes. Friendliness and interest are expressed when a person’s eyes meet you directly. It’s important to keep in mind, though, that making eye contact is considered extremely rude in other cultures. If someone looks away for a moment and then back again, the person is probably paying attention to what you’re saying. If this person continues to look away while you’re talking, he or she might not be interested – or could be shy. Looking to the side is common body language for someone who feels guilty about something. People also use hand gestures during a conversation to describe the size of something or the way someone acted. Finally, be aware that when someone keeps pointing at you while talking, it could mean the person is angry or feels superior in some way.
