Fifteen years has passed since the establishment of UMIN in 1989. The five objectives of UMIN, put forward by the founder Dr. Kaihara, seemed so difficult to accomplish at that time. Now we realize, with surprise, that all of them have become routine work on the UMIN network.
Today, UMIN is made available to almost all medical professionals throughout Japan, and its extended services cover all the field of research, education, clinical practice, hospital management, and so on. UMIN is now essential to university hospitals and plays a leading role in networking in medicine, especially concerning the standardization of data formats and software.
As chairman, I would like to thank all who have been concerned in UMIN activities for their contribution, and also wish to thank the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) for its continuous support and funding. We will continue to make all possible efforts to facilitate further development of UMIN.
I hope this revised brochure will help you understand the current features of UMIN.
