Infrared Detectors Technology & Market Trends Report

In addition to mature applications, the IR detector market is expected to be driven by emerging applications like smart building automation or mobile devices temperature sensing

Next growth opportunities spotted outside traditional markets: smart building automation and mobile phone business

Total infrared detector market generated revenue of more than $153M in 2012, mostly due to the mature motion detection market which relies on high-volume sales of automatic lighting and intrusion detection systems.

However in a scenario that includes spot thermometer function in mobile devices, it is expected that these revenues will top at $381M in 2018, growing at a 16% CAGR, fueled by:

Small detector applications, especially in consumer mobile applications. That growth in mobile applications is expected to be driven, in the short term, by adoption of monopixel sensors for internal temperature measurement and spot thermometry in smartphones and tablets. Technological innovation will be the key to compete successfully with other technologies in that market. Wafer-level-packaging will be necessary to successfully address these markets driven by price and looking for ever smaller form factor sensors. A specific scenario for adoption of IR sensors in mobile devices raises the market revenues in 2018 by $30M.
Array detectors which range from medium size (4x4 to 16x16 pixels) to large size (32x32 and above) are expected to grow at a ~30% CAGR in the 2013/2018 period. Medium size arrays have started to be successfully sold in HVAC for buildings and automotive, people counting for retail, home appliances and will continue to expand due to affordable pricing. Large size arrays are expected to target the key market for smart building automation that will use a wide variety of detector functions and could support higher pricing. However, overall, these positive market dynamics will be fueled by detector price erosion.

This report includes market insights in units & revenue by market segment and also by detector resolution. IR detector market forecasts are realized for 2013 – 2018. The report includes an overview of small IR arrays for imaging purposes, but the complete analysis of infrared imaging applications is covered in another Yole Développement report: “Uncooled Infrared Imaging”.

Definitions

• An infrared detector is a photodetector that detects infrared radiation and

converts it into a signal. By using several single detection elements

(called pixels), it forms an array of pixels.

• Main parts of an IR detecting system:

(IR motion detector here) Detector

packaged

• IR detector systems are very variable: motion detector, ear thermometer, spot

thermometer, people counter…

• Modules include the packaged detector + PCB + socket + fresnel lens option.

• Packaged detectors include: chip + ASIC + packaging + optics lens option.

• Various chip size (from 1 to 80x80 pixels) and pixel pitch (from 34µ to 500µ in 2012)

Market Research Scope and Methodology

• Market research scope– The report surveys uncooled infrared detectors that supply a signal to be

analyzed and not an image. The detector size goes from one pixel to lower than

160*120 pixels. The wavelengths targeted are mostly Long Wave Infrared

(LWIR) from 8 to 12 microns. Some applications however use other Mid Wave

Infrared (MWI) wavelengths e.g. gas detection and spectroscopy.

– This includes the following technologies:• Pyroelectric using crystal, ceramic, and thin film

• Thermopiles

• Microbolometers

– An overview of small IR imager (less than 160x120) is provided in the report

but Infrared imagers are covered in detail by the Uncooled Infrared Imaging

market report.

– Market estimates are done for the 2011 – 2018 time period in $ (with $1.30 =

one euro conversion)

Infrared Detector Market Forecast by ApplicationScenario 2: Penetration in mobile devices

2011-2018 (in $M)

• Mobile devices is a high volume market that is strongly price sensitive & demanding on form factor miniaturization. As a

consequence IR detectors used in smartphones & tablets have a very low price point starting from $0.5 at high volume and

will experience a strong price erosion due to sales growth. A double digit average price erosion is expected (~ -10%).

• Thermopiles players are expected to dominate that new market because pyroelectrics are less suitable for accurate

temperature measurement. Texas Instruments is very well positioned on that market since the introduction of its Wafer

Level Packaged sensor in 2011.
