On the Ski Trip we have girls suffering from nut allergies. We politely request that you do not bring nuts and
products containing nuts with you as part of your packed lunches and snacks to minimise the risk of a reaction.
Thank you in anticipation for your co-operation in this matter.

SKIING
Ski Lessons
You will gain the most from your ski lessons if you ask appropriate questions and try to follow your ski instructors
advice carefully. They are there to help you, so do not be afraid to ask! Always arrive on time for your lessons,
especially after lunch. It takes much longer than you expect to get ready with all your ski equipment. Make sure that
you know where to meet your instructor each morning and afternoon slopes are very busy and you can easily missyour lesson.
If, for some reason, you become separated from your groups during your lesson, stay where you are! Move to the
side of the slope, out of the way of other skiers and wait for your instructors return. If you see a member of staff or
another of our groups, then alert them to your situation. Under no circumstances should you attempt to ski back
down the mountain by yourself.
Within your group we will expect you to look out for one another. Tell your ski instructor if someone is struggling or if
they have fallen over. You may not necessarily be in a group with your year group friends, so introduce yourself to
everyone and get to know your group!
You must remember to bring your hat, gloves, goggles, ski pass and sun cream, regardless of the weather. The
weather conditions can often change quickly on the mountain and you do not want to be caught out. You will also
need to take some money with you in order to purchase lunch, snacks and a drink on the slopes. We will expect you
to pair up with a friend so that you are responsible for checking one another for each of these items before you leave
the hotel each day. If the weather allows for bare skin, do not forget to put sun cream under your chin and on your
ears as the light is reflected from the snow.
Boots, Skis, Helmets and Poles
You will be told where to leave all of your ski equipment. Ensure that you leave your equipment in the space allocatedto you. When you are not wearing your ski boots you must always ensure that they are left fastened. This makes
them a lot less likely to break if dropped. Always carry your skis and poles vertically, without swinging them, so as not
to injure others around you.
Make sure that you never take someone elses skis or boots. The bindings on the skis will have been adjusted
specifically to your height, weight and ability, so it is imperative that no-one uses the incorrect equipment as this could
cause injury. If necessary, your name can be written on tape and stuck onto your boots. We will provide you with a
named ski tie which you must always fasten to your skis when you leave them unattended.
If you have any problems with your ski equipment you should talk to a member of staff or the ski technician about it at
the first possible opportunity. If the problem arises during a lesson, tell your instructor as soon as possible.
Safety on the slopes
Obviously we expect you to be on your best behaviour for the duration of the trip. We expect you to follow theinstructions from both NGHS staff and your ski instructor and be polite and courteous; it is imperative that you do notinterrupt whilst any instructions are being given and that you listen carefully to what is being said. This is especiallyimportant whilst you are on the slopes as defiance of these rules may result in an accident or injury.
It should go without saying that the use of iPods/MP3 players etc should not be used whilst on the slopes to ensurethat all instructions can be heard. Mobile phones should not be used whilst in ski lessons.
To ensure that we all have a safe and enjoyable trip we also expect you to follow the Skiers Code. You will be askedto watch a short film explaining this code prior to departure.

Action in the case of an accident on the slopes
If you are on the slopes, you will always be in a ski lesson and in the case of an accident your instructor will take care
of the situation. It is however important that you know how to deal with any emergencies that may occur. You will not
have needed to use any of this advice on any previous school trip so please read it carefully so that you know the
procedure.
Secure the accident area. Protect with crossed skis. If necessary your instructor will post someone to give a
warning.
Provide warmth and give the casualty nothing to eat or drink.
Alert the rescue service. They will want to know:
Place and piste number or name (nearest piste marker), number of people injured and the type of injury.
Establish the facts of the accident.
The place, time and circumstances of the accident. The terrain, snow conditions and visibility
Any markings and signs

There will be spot checks on tidiness throughout the week. Your room should always be left litter free with thebeds made and everything in its place. It helps if the cleaners are able to see the carpet in your room!
On arrival please check to see if there is anything broken in your room. You will be asked to complete an audit ofyour room on arrival to check that everything is in full working order. If you find anything wrong with your roomplease inform a member of staff immediately. After this, all breakages will be considered your responsibility andyou may be charged.
MealsYou are expected to be present at all meal times. Skiing is an energetic activity and you need to eat well. You may
wish to bring additional food to snack on during the day. Please be punctual and do not leave the table at breakfast or
dinner until you have checked with a member of staff that there are no notices. You will be notified of meal times
when we arrive at the hotel.

Drinks are likely to be supplied with meals and the water in the hotel will be drinkable. You must not take drinks you
have bought outside of the hotel or brought with you into the restaurant. You will need to either buy something extra
from the restaurant or wait until you get to your room. If you are making your own hot drinks please ensure that you
wash up all cups and tidy up beforeyou go out for the day. Do not borrow cutlery from the restaurant.
Fire Drill
You will probably be very tired when we arrive at the hotel but please make sure that you locate all of the fire escapesfrom your room. There will probably be a fire drill within the first 24 hours at the hotel; you will be warned of when this
will occur. Assemble in the designated area and line up in alphabetical order within your staff groups, which are listed
this booklet.

There should be no running or shouting in the corridors at any time of the day or night and also no noise at all in the
corridors after 10.00pm. There will be a variable curfew time, depending on the year group and the events of the day.
Please be considerate towards those who are tired and want to go to bed before these times. Extensions may be

OTHER INFORMATION
Telephones
There are public telephones in the hotel.
To call a number in the United Kingdom dial 00 44 followed by the STD code without the first zero and then
the local number. So for example, to call school (usually 0115 941 7663), you would dial 00 44 115 941 7663.To use a BT Chargecard, dial 0800 200 209, then key in your account number followed by your personal 4-
digit PIN. Finally ring the required number WITHOUT THE COUNTRY CODE e.g. 0115 941 7663.
There may be telephones in the hotel rooms. These will be considerably more expensive than the public telephones
so the hotel will block all external calls from your rooms. You may, however, be able to call other rooms in the hotel.
Money
We suggest that 150 spending money will be more than sufficient for your needs for the week. You may wish to
bring a little more for presents, but we suggest a maximum of around 200. We recommend that pupils bring a lockfor their suitcase and leave the majority of their money locked in their case during the day as we cannot guarantee
that there will be a safe in your room. Insurance cover precludes staff from looking after your money.
Exchange rate: 1.00 is approximately $1.55 and $1.00 is approximately 0.65
Cashing Travellers' Cheques
This maybe possible in the hotel. You may be able to find a better rate of exchange when we are out. Please
mention your need to cash a cheque to staff.
Courtesy and Behaviour
Please make every effort to be courteous. Thanking people (for example the coach drivers and waiters) costs younothing. You will be expected to be punctual to all meals, meetings and ski lessons.
It should go without saying that a high standard of behaviour is expected at all times from all participants.Smoking and the use of alcohol are not permitted .
You are reminded that you must never leave the hotel without specific permission from a member of our school
staff except in the case of a fire or similar emergency. If in any doubt, ask.
Under no circumstances should you go into the room of a member of any other school group or allow them toenter your room. This includes balconies. If we have all the rooms on a particular floor it is not appropriate forstudents from other schools to be there at all.
You will be asked to sign a copy of the behaviour contract and expect you to follow these rules at all times.

ESSENTIAL SKIWEAR
Some items of clothing really are essential on a ski trip. You need to be warm whilst out on the slopes but also haveclothing that gives you the freedom to move.
Ski Jackets
Your ski jacket is essential to protect you from the
coldness of the snow, as well as the heat produced as
you exert yourself. Ideally your ski jacket should be
waterproof and windproof and also have pockets to
keep your valuables in whilst you are on the slopes.
Sweaters
To keep nice and warm, ensure you have lots of thin
layers that you can take off or put on throughout the
day.
Gloves (or mittens)
Gloves are an essential piece of clothing to keep your
hands warm and also to keep your hands safe when
carrying your skis. Ensure that these are waterproof.
Ski Socks
A good pair of ski socks will not only keep your feet
warm but can also help pad your shins when wearing
your boots.
Ski Trousers/Salopettes
Your ski trousers should be warm and waterproof. You should also ensure that you can move easily in
your trousers so that you are not feeling restricted
when you ski.
Woolly Hat
A hat is essential to keep you warm and help retain
your body heat so is an essential piece of clothing for
when you are not on the slopes
Goggles
Look for goggles with adjustable straps to ensure that
they fit well. Also try to find ones with anti-fog lenses.
Underwear
It may not be the most glamorous part of your skiwear
but good underwear can really make a difference.
Long johns, vests and tee-shirts will add to your
warmth without being too bulky.

SECURITY REQUIREMENTS
NO sharp objects of any kind will be allowed onboard either in your pockets or in your hand luggage. Any sharp
objects will be confiscate and you will not get them back; this includes nail clippers and scissors. These items should
be packed in your hold luggage. Remove all metal objects prior to passing through the metal detectors in order to
speed up the screening process.
Please ensure your case is NOT locked as the lock may be cut off by US security personnel. Please keep
your lock within your case until we arrive in the resort.
If you have a medical condition that requires you to carry a needle and/or syringe on your person or in your carry-on
baggage you must also have a letter from your doctor stating this fact. The medication must be packaged with a
pharmaceutical label identifying it. You must also have informed the staff of this well in advance of the trip.
Very Important
Do not carry anything onboard the aircraft for another person.
Do not make jokes about carrying explosives on board. You will be taken away for questioning and we will all bedelayed.
Finally...
It may seem like we are giving you lots of rules about what you cant do on the ski trip but most of this iscommon sense. Our main aim of the trip is that you all have a safe and rewarding experience either learning a
new skill or improving an existing one. We want you all to have fun and look forward to seeing your progress on
the slopes in April.
