Congressman Frank LoBiondo was honored by The Guidance Center at its fifth annual Mental Health Distinguished Community Leadership Awards Dinner held on Thursday, October 18, at Merighi’s Savoy Inn in Vineland.

He was recognized and thanked for his dedicated work supporting mental health, education, veterans, healthcare, business, and the environment in the local and regional community — making it a better place to live for all of its residents through his leadership, volunteerism and advocacy.

service, offering insights and anecdotes to honor him for his contributions to The Guidance Center, family, friends and the community.

“The LoBiondo family has been a big part of the history of The Guidance Center,” noted Pepper, “starting with his father Frank who was one of its founding members and trustee from 1962 to 1978, and as president from 1970-72. Congressman Frank followed in his father’s footsteps, serving on the board of trustees from 1979 to 1985 and as president from 1981-1983. George LoBiondo, Frank’s nephew, served on the board from 2003 to 2011 and is currently the Center’s director of human resources. As you can see, assisting with the mental health needs of our community has been a mission of the LoBiondo family for many years.”

A special part of the evening’s program was a presentation by Elaine Braidi, a Vineland resident, who told about her experiences getting family support from The Guidance Center through its Intensive Family Support Services (IFSS) program. Braidi told about her personal family history with mental illness and explained how the people in the IFSS program assisted her with compassionate, professional support through her many and ongoing challenges.

“I want to thank Elaine personally and on behalf of everyone here, for sharing her story,” said Ed Bowman. “Her testimonial is an amazing tribute to the fine work of the

people of The Guidance Center and proves the great value of our mission.”

“In addition, I thank our community event sponsor Newfield National Bank for their generous and dedicated support,” added Bowman. “I also extend a special thanks to Peter Galetto, one of our past Distinguished Community Awardees. Each year Peter donates a stunning piece of original glass art that he created for us to auction at our awards dinner. These pieces have generated significant donations to the Center and we are truly appreciative of his ongoing generosity.”

The Guidance Center is proud to have recognized Congressman Frank LoBiondo as our 2018 Distinguished Community Leader. We thank him for a lifetime of work benefiting our community and for the many ways his influence has made a positive impact on the mental health and well-being of so many people in our area.

The Guidance Center hosted two mental health workshops for victim service providers at its Carmel Road site in August 2018.

Area providers were trained in recognizing clients who suffer from violence and trauma and have unique needs. Decisions regarding specific care for these individuals can have a profound effect on their lives. To ensure that victims of crime receive the most appropriate treatments available, providers must engage in a victim-centered, trauma-informed approach that is ethically sound and values cultural diversity.

The two-part workshops were entitled Ethical and Legal Standards in Victim Services and Providing Culturally Competent Care in Victim Services.

As the need for victim services continues to grow and spans across many fields including health, mental health and criminal justice, clinicians are challenged by complex ethical dilemmas. These courses offer an overview of federal and state laws as well as the criminal justice system as it pertains to victims of crime. Crimes discussed are limited to physical and sexual assault as well as gun violence in relation to mental health, substance use, immigrants and LGBTQIA. These courses offer mental health professionals tools and resources to identify, analyze, and resolve the

many ethical questions that arise daily. Participants engaged in values clarification and the self-assessment necessary to explore and resolve ethical dilemmas effectively. We are pleased to announce that The Guidance Center’s board room located at our Carmel Road complex in Millville has been dedicated to M. Jay Einstein. Jay is a longtime member of the board of trustees who continues to serve with true humility and dedication as a tireless advocate for quality mental health care in our community.

Jay served as president of the board of trustees for 12 years during his total of 43 years on the board since joining in 1976. He was board president from 1980-81, 1984-88, and most recently 2011 through 2017.

Guidance Center board room named for Jay Einstein

With countless volunteer hours of professional leadership throughout the years, Jay has assisted The Guidance Center with numerous major accomplishments in providing and improving quality mental health services and programs for individuals and families in the greater Cumberland County area.

“We are so honored to recognize and thank Jay Einstein for his many contributions to The Guidance Center and the community,” says Ed Bowman, president. “He has literally given a lifetime of time and talent to benefit better mental health for those in need. Naming the board room in his honor is just a small token of thanks for all he has done and continues to do.”
