Well done to our Year 9 hockey team who competed in the Bradford Hockey Tournament last week. They played South Craven School winning the match 7-0 and Bradford Grammar School, winning 3 – 1. Photo left to right: Katie Lyons (9JP), Bea Waller (9JRW), Sophie Armitage (9JB) Freya Bishop (9JRW), Nisha Cant—Vice Captain (9HM), Kirsty McMillan—Captain (9JRW), Anna Batterley (9MWC) and Ellie Cooper (9ALC).
Congratulations to our Year 9 Football B1 and B2 teams who competed in the Aire/Wharfe 7-a-side Tournament at St Mary's School, last Thursday.
Both teams played 5 games, won 3, drew 1 and lost 1. They finished equal on points but the B2 team had a superior goal difference by one goal to take the trophy. Goals for both teams were scored by Josh Brooks (9CW) 4, Harrison Kipling (9CW) 3 and Patrick Campbell (9JP) 1.
The B1 team finished first and the B2 team came second.
Well done to our U14B netball team who played Samuel Lister this week, the match finished IGS 10-2 Samuel Lister. Aisling O’Neill (9JP) and Josephine Gibbs (9JP) provide the match report.
The match started off tough, with fouls from both Ilkley and Samuel Lister, but as Ilkley got into the match we picked up and scored some good goals. During half-time, we discussed tactics and ideas for improvement, then started moving the ball up the court and towards our goal swiftly and efficiently, and scoring well. There were a few minor setbacks with replays and footwork, but in the end Ilkley won 10-2 with Imogen Brodaty (9GPS) being named as 'player of the match'. This result means that we have moved forward in the league, fixing us in a good position on the leader board.

Bravo to all 71 of you who have been taking part in the Maureen Williams School of Dance production of ‘The Music in Me’. Every two years the dance school produce a big dance show and the latest show opened last week . The show takes the form of a ballet in the first half and is based on the Enid Blyton’s children's book ‘The Far Away Tree’ that has been adapted and choreographed by Maureen Williams. It tells the story of the adventures of three children who discover a magical tree in an enchanted forest. The second half is comprised of songs and dances that showcase the different styles taught at MWSD performed by the various classes. The final shows are this weekend and tickets are available from www.ticketsource.co.uk/mwsd.

As we approach the Christmas break, focus starts to switch to mock exams in January and the GCSE, AS and A2 exams towards the summer. Our website has lots of essential information on exams, take a look here. The webpage contains links to all the exam bodies we use: Edexcel, AQA and OCR, all exam codes for GCSE, AS and A2 alongside guidelines for controlled assessments, coursework and use of internet during assessments. The timetables for the mock GCSE exams in the new year have now been finalised.

If you have any questions regarding exams please visit the Exams Office during break or lunchtime located at the front of school near Reception.
Movember 2013 saw a group of IGS teachers banish the razor for a month, raising a significant amount for the Movember charity in the process. This year there’s just a ’tache trio, but the aim remains the same: to raise funds for Movember, and awareness on cancers and mental health issues that affect men.
Movember started out as an idea forged in an Australian pub back in 1999, and has grown to be a global movement that sees men across the world grow a moustache (beards and sideburns are banned, it must only be a ‘tache!) from the start of November. Its impact and spread is perhaps best summed up by noting that the likes of Snoop Dogg have signed on as Movember ambassadors, whilst in the computer game Football Manager 2015 players grow moustaches during November…and FIFA 14 Ultimate Team features a Movember Cup!
As a Media teacher, we look at how the ‘semiotics’ (or commonly perceived connotations) of stubble and facial hair as part of make-up or mise-en-scene in film or TV tend to be negative, signifying villainy or other negative characteristics, from Western movies to TV dramas like Tess D’Urbeville. Movember is an ironic comment on the state and perception of masculinity today to challenge the male tendency not to speak about or seek check-ups on health concerns. For many people today the moustache is linked with the decade fashion forgot, the 1970s (think the Village People!) or early to mid 80s TV characters like Tom Selleck’s Magnum PI or David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight in Knightrider. So, if you spot Mr Goodbold with his fine Tom Selleck-style tache, Mr Clarke with his Picasso-style facial swirl, or myself with the (Motorhead vocalist) Lemmy-inspired handlebar, perhaps it might just inspire you to make some contribution, no matter how small, to this worthy cause. Like many colleagues, I’ve experienced two generations of my family undergo the traumas of cancer, and Movember seeks to help encourage earlier diagnosis and to remove the taboo around discussing common cancers such as testicular or prostrate cancer. Our Mo Bros…
There is a collection box at reception and in K5, while donations can also be made online through the IGS Movember Team at http://uk.movember.com/team/1629889.
Anyone who donates £1+ can get a copy of a feature-length documentary film celebrating our Media Studies students getting some of the highest marks across the UK, featuring every AS film opening and A2 music video, with a look behind the scenes at how these were produced and the role of research and theory within the productions, plus a look back at some of the many Media productions from the past six years. You can get a DVD, presented in a slim line case (all production costs covered by myself) from the school reception or the Media room, K5. Featuring some horror material, this could be considered equivalent to a BBFC 12 rating. You can view a short trailer on the ‘IGSMediaStudies’ YouTube channel. With more to come from DVD sales, the current total raised is £170, any contribution, large or small will be welcomed. The three of us will delay the shaving off until Tuesday for one final push on Monday – just as well, with the moisturizer running low! Scan the QR codes for more information on how to donate.

Some Male Health Facts
Each year over 40,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Every hour a man dies in the UK from prostate cancer.
One in eight men will be diagnosed with this in their lifetime.
The prostate, about the size of a walnut in younger men, is doughnut
shaped and lies below the bladder, in front of the bowels.
A man with a father or brother who developed prostate cancer
before 60 is twice as likely to develop the cancer – so should seek
regular, early check-ups.
Without check-ups, many men will fail to recognize the development
