A man must be big enough to admit his
mistakes, smart enough to profit from them, and
strong enough to correct them.
John Calvin Maxwell is an American author, speaker, who has written many books, primarily focusing on
leadership
Leadership is Influence….
Process of influencing others to understand and agree about what needs to be done and how to do it
Process of facilitating
individual and collective efforts
to accomplish shared objectives
KEY to developing a raving fan culture
Ability of a leader to incite action in
others simply through mastering
the skills of communication and
motivation
Activity – 10 Mins
• Leaders you Admire
• Share a story about the best or most influential leader
you have encountered.
• After the story, identify leadership characteristics by
asking the question: “What was it that made this
person such an effective leader?”
• Then as a group, identify the traits that all the leaders
seemed to share.
• All groups then discuss the shared traits.
7 FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE
Character – Who They Are
”True leadership always begins with the inner person.”
Relationships – Who They Know
“Build the right kinds of relationships with the right people, and you can become the
real leader in an organization”
Knowledge – What They Know
Whenever I was new to an organization, I always spent a lot of time doing homework
before I tried to take the lead
Intuition – What They Feel
Leaders seek to recognize and influence intangibles such as energy, morale, timing,
and momentum
Experience – Where They’ve Been
The greater challenges you’ve faced as a leader in the past, the more likely followers
are to give you a chance in the present
Past Success – What They’ve Done
Every time I extended myself, took a risk, and succeeded, followers had another
reason to trust my leadership ability – and to listen to what I had to say
Ability – What They Can Do
The bottom line for followers is what a leader is capable of. They want to know
whether that person can lead the team to victory
4 Behavioral Styles
DISC is a behavior assessment tool
based on the DISC theory of psychologist William Moulton Marston
