Causes of ProblemBritish during their reign not only influenced the Indians

politically, economically and socially; but also influenced their minds to such an extent that even the next generation has not

been able to overcome that influence. The colonization of mind still exists among the people of Pakistan and is one of the root

causes of the identity crisis faced by the youth of Pakistan today.

Islam:Islam is practiced by the majority of Pakistanis and governs their personal, political, economic and legal lives.Among certain obligations for Muslims are to pray five times a day - at dawn, noon, afternoon, sunset, and evening.Friday is the Muslim holy day. Everything is closed.During the holy month of Ramadan all Muslims must fast from dawn to dusk and are only permitted to work six hours per day. Fasting includes no eating, drinking, cigarette smoking, or gum chewing.

Hierarchical SocietyPakistan is a hierarchical society.

People are respected because of their age and position.Older people are viewed as wise and are granted respect. In a social situation, they are served first and their drinks may be

poured for them. Elders are introduced first, are provided with the choicest cuts of meat, and in general are treated much like

royalty.Pakistanis expect the most senior person, by age or position, to

make decisions that are in the best interest of the group.Titles are very important and denote respect.

Positive and Negative ImpactsThe rights for women came with the arrival of westernization in Pakistan. Arguably, women in Pakistan enjoy more autonomy as compared to any other Muslim country; be it political rights, social rights or even religious rights. This influence has not only allowed women to take active part in politics and international sports; but also resulted in elevating status of women when it comes to getting high profile jobs, thus helping them stand on equal footing with men.

Joint family system, a trademark of Pakistani social culture is losing its value and seems to be vanishing from the scene. It is being replaced by a culture of individuality. The youth of today believes in independence and individuality and as a result we have seen a rise in the psychological disorders, divorces and

crime rates (suicides and rapes).

Traditional foodThe traditional concept of home-cooked food in our culture is being replaced by fast food meals from renowned restaurants like KFC, Pizza Hut and McDonalds. The Pakistani dishes which were famous for their taste, hardly seem to find acceptance

amongst the youth. As of today, we see cold drinks being used to such an extent that they are part of almost every meal, even in

formal dinners.

Impact on languageBy far, the greatest impact that the westernization has had on

our culture, is on the language. Our mother tongue Urdu is being replaced by English as the more common language used in the conversations. The reason, being increased number of English medium schools in our society and the excessive emailing and

messaging amongst the youth Surprisingly the influence is to such an extent that some part of

the youth feels ashamed of speaking Urdu. We have started using English as a tool to distinguish between the classes; high

and low class.

The role of Media in spreading westernization.Westernization has been spread through out our country

because of the media. The TV channels shows various newscasters and different characters in the dramas wearing westernized clothes. In addition to this, intimate scenes are becoming more common in TV programs. Even our Lux Style

Awards depict the western style of dressing and decor.

AdaabsWesternization has intruded so deeply into our culture that the Islamic values and “Adaabs” have faded away. The obligations of

a Muslim have long been forgotten. No longer do people respond to the call for prayers, No longer do they keep fasts in

Ramzan, in fact, they eat or smoke openly. Alcohol, prostitution, drugs are becoming regular and despite their openness, no actions are being taken to eliminate them from our society.

CELEBRATIONSEid in Pakistan is slowly and steadily loosing its charm and

importance in the youngsters Muslims. When they are children and young, especially for the children aging from 18yrs onwards,

they have become bored of eid and are less interested in its preparations.

. Nowadays, with the changing trends in fashion and lifestyle, youngsters have become too much influenced by media and

their surroundings that their interests have diverted elsewhere. For example, they are more enthusiastic about Holi, Diwali,

Christmas, Halloween, and New Year. All these celebrations are not included in our culture but yet we find them more amusing

and enjoyable.

Relationships before Marriage

A new trend in Pakistan is the emergence of the boyfriend/ girlfriend relation which starts at the age of 15 (hopefully).

Parents send their children to schools and universities to study but unfortunately they end up into some other activities. There's no right or wrong over here its not bad to like someone but is it

good to have relationships that are not meant to last?

Page 17: Influence of western culture in pakistan

DatingPeople have come forward with this western culture of going out together and dating in the

"Cafe's" . Being physical in a relationship is not much of a big deal and they actually think its cool. Is this the future of Pakistan? Why is it that it has become mandatory to have a boyfriend/girlfriend?

Page 18: Influence of western culture in pakistan

Our AssumptionWe think wearing Shalwar kames is too uncool, speaking Urdu is uncool, listening to Urdu or Hindi songs is uncool or

is even considered cheap. We must respect and follow our culture rather than following American culture.
