Generic trends
Magic Maggiore: Technical Reachback Workshop 2017 O. TENGBLAD 7
• Number of radiation detectors increases• Cheap, compact, low power
• Autonomous operation
→ Most of the detectors are not operated by radiation experts
• Richer dataStep 1: Count rate
Step 2: Energy information (spectra)
Step 3: Time stamped events (list mode)
Step 4: Pulse-shape analysis (neutron/gamma)
Step 5: Segmented detectors (imaging)
→ Data analysis in field gets harder
Way forwardTechnical Reachback
Magic Maggiore: Technical Reachback Workshop 2017 O. TENGBLAD 8
Radiation specialists provide remote expert support for field officers• Field officers not radiation expert
• Single expert can support multiple field officers
• Field officers focus on their core activity (not radiation)
• Complex analysis simpler to do in office
• Move data, not people

Standard for technical reachback?
• List-mode standard opens up the possibility to use new detector technologies
• Reachback is needed to take these into efficient use for nuclear security
• Nature of reachback services• 24/7 operation favoured
• Most of the time not much happening
• Very high demand on RN events
→ Would greatly benefit from shared resources
Data can be shared only if protocol is agreed on
