A concerted push by Inglis to gain
the support of Victoria’s biggest
breeders to back the state’s major
auction with some of their best-
credentialed stock has industry stakeholders
confident about an invigorated Melbourne
market ahead of the Premier Yearling Sale,
which gets underway tomorrow.
The focus on the Classic sale, Inglis’ first of the
year, and that of rival Magic Millions in January,
has seen some of Victoria’s better-bred yearlings be
offered out of the state in recent years but the quality
of 2020 Premier catalogue has the endorsement of
the buying bench. Continued on page 2>>

MONTIA won on debut over 1200 metres at Moonee Valley for Hayes/Dabernig and her owner/breeders Lindsay Maxsted and partners. She won by 2¾ lengths from Miss Kingston (Pride of Dubai) and will be aimed at the ATC Sires Produce S.-Gr.1 and Champagne S.-Gr.1.
His first crop also includes Gr.3 placed duo POSTCODE (runs next in the Skyline S.-Gr.2) and TICKET TO RIDE, Stakes placed CANADIAN SPICE and debut winner VANGELIC (runs next in a Listed race).
DUBAI STAR made all to win her maiden over 1100 metres at Canterbury by 1¼ lengths for trainers Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott and owner/breeder Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum.
The leading 1st crop sire: Stakes winner TANKER, Stakes placed duo BELLA NIPOTINA and DUBAI STAR and winners SENSE OF HONOUR, PLATINUM DUBAI and MAHA.
Homesman on song for Group 1 first-upA barrier trial win at Werribee has jockey Ben
Melham confident Homesman (War Front) can
run a big race on his return in today’s Chipping
Norton Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick.
Melham has ridden Homesman in his three
Australian wins and has chosen to stick with the
five-year-old rather than ride in Melbourne today.
"Trials are probably a new thing to him," Melham
said. "In his first one he was a bit complacent but
with the blinkers on at Werribee, they switched
him on. He's a real racehorse, especially with
those blinkers, he knows what it's all about and
gives 110 per cent. He's a horse that caught us by
surprise on a few occasions thinking that he was
going to improve with a run under his belt, but he
pleasantly surprised us by winning, or just getting
beaten, on most occasions first-up."
Carif to kick-off Cup pathCarif (So You Think) starts out on a path
connections hope will end with victory in the
Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) when he returns
in today’s Chipping Norton Stakes. The four-year-
old was last seen finishing second in the Queen
Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 3, 2600m) at Flemington in
November and co-trainer Peter Snowden isn’t
expecting fireworks today. "The Chipping Norton,
for him, is just a starting point,” he told Racing.
com. “He won't be competitive at weight-for-age
at a mile but it's an important start to what might
just be a three-run program this prep."
Bowman-Godolphin chase more featuresHugh Bowman is looking to bag more big-race
wins for Godolphin when he links up with live
chances Avilius (Pivotal) and Flit (Medaglia
D’Oro) at Randwick this afternoon. Two weeks
ago Bowman and James Cummings teamed up
for a feature race double with Alizee (Sepoy)
in the Apollo Stakes (Gr 2. 1400m) and Flit in
the Light Fingers Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and
the jockey is hoping for a repeat when Avilius
contests the Chipping Norton Stakes and Flit
returns for the Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 400m).
Bowman would prefer a rain-affected track for
Avilius but expects the horse to be competitive
regardless. "He's a good horse without it, he
can win without the wet track, but if it was wet I
would be even more confident," Bowman said.
"It's a very good race this year, a very open race.”
Probabeel set to spoil SurroundStar New Zealand filly Probabeel (Savabeel) will be
out for redemption at Randwick today as she returns
to the scene of her defeats to Funstar (Adelaide) in
last year’s Tea Rose Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and Flight
Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) on soft ground. Back on top of
the ground, Jamie Richards is confident his three-
year-old filly can turn the tables on Chris Waller’s
Group 1 winner. "I think that was probably her best
run in the Tea Rose," Richards said. "That was 1400
metres on good ground and I think we're going to get
the same sort of conditions on Saturday. Funstar did
seem to appreciate getting her toe into the ground a
little bit, which I'm sure will happen again at some
stage. It's bound to rain. But if she can run up to that
form she is going to be right in the thick of it."
Prague up to Skyline testThe Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained
undefeated colt Prague (Redoute’s Choice)
will look to book his spot in the Golden Slipper
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) today as he runs in the
Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick. The
$1.6 million Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling
Sale graduate won the Canonbury Stakes (Gr
3, 1100m) at his last start. "His work has been
good leading into this and he certainly has not
gone backwards since that last run," assistant
trainer Annabel Neasham said. "If anything I
think he's taken a bit of improvement. There is
certainly some depth to the race but hopefully
we're the one to beat. He looks very progressive
but it's not going to be a walk in the park."
Sargent out for another upsetA week after producing a Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2,
1400m) upset with Brandenburg (Burgundy), John
Sargent will look for a repeat with promising fillies
Emeralds (Sebring) and Aspect Ratio (Declaration
Of War) in the Surround Stakes. While Sargent is
realistic about the chances of pulling off boilover
results on successive weekends, he has not ruled
serving up a repeat dose. "You'd love to because it
is a very strong field," Sargent said. "Emeralds has
had the run so she will be fit and ready to go but
she will need a lot of luck in the run against a few of
that calibre. Aspect Ratio's whole campaign is being
centred around winning the ATC Oaks so this is a
kick off point for her."
Commodus not there to make up numbersThe maiden Commodus (Uncle Mo) faces a stiff task
in today’s Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) but his
trainer Mark Sues insists the gelding isn’t lining up in
the $1 million contest at Flemington just to make up
the numbers. "This was the aim all along. If we got
in, we got in," Sues told Racing.com. "If everything
goes well, he can be thereabouts. I'm not going there
to get $20,000, put it that way. I could have gone to
Wangaratta on Sunday and picked up $20,000 in a
maiden."

Admiral no Joke in Blamey
Admiral's Joker (Bel Esprit) will take his chance
in today's Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at
Flemington with trainer Kylie Vella hoping the
seven-year-old can gain a win which would
guarantee her stable star a spot in the All-Star
Mile at Caulfield on March 14. "We are pretty
eager and keen to get to Saturday and hopefully
we can come home with a win," she told Racing.
com. ”We think he's pretty spot-on now. He has
got the visors back on and he is up over the
mile, which we think he is suited to."
New Universe eyeing black-typeNew Universe (Darci Brahma) gets the chance
for a first black-type success when the multiple
winner lines up in the Members Cup (Listed,
1600m) at Doomben today. Chris Waller often
sends his horses north from Sydney to Brisbane
when they start to struggle in the class and New
Universe is a case in point. The six-year-old has
had two starts in Brisbane for a second and a
win, both over 1600 metres and stable foreman
Brett Killion said Waller puts a lot of work into
placing his horses in races they can win. "New
Universe is probably best around 1600 metres
and a bit of rain doesn't hurt him either," he
said. "So there are plenty of races up here for
him."
Rippa recovered from hoof injuryVeteran sprinter I'm A Rippa (Love Conquers
All) has bounced back from a hoof injury
with his trainer Tony Gollan viewing today's
Members at Tattersall's Open (1200m) at
Doomben as the ideal place for the six-year-old
to make his return. "He has had a jump-out and
his work has been sound so he looks ready to
race," Gollan said. "But whether he has reached
the end of his tether this time we will see on
Saturday. Five of his eight wins have been at
Doomben so waiting for racing to get back there
might be the right move.”
Odyssey fit for returnThe Odyssey (Better Than Ready) is not a noted
first-up performer but trainer Kelly Schweida
believes the gelding is the fittest he has been
for a return to racing when he resumes in
today’s The Jewel Prelude 3YO Plate (1200m)
at Doomben. "He can come back from a break
looking pretty big. But this time he has only
had a short break and he is the fittest he had
probably been for a first up race," Schweida
said. "The Odyssey has had a jump-out but no
trial. He has drawn well and this looks a nice
race to start off."
Randwick Guineas next for SethCaulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner
Super Seth (Dundeel) will head to Sydney for
next week’s Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)
but could still run in the $5 million All-Star
Mile (1600m) a week later. The Anthony
Freedman-trained colt was narrowly beaten
in last Saturday's Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)
at Caulfield by Streets Of Avalon (Magnus)
and Freedman Racing yesterday confirmed
Randwick Guineas plans. "Super Seth will head
to Sydney for next Saturday's Group 1 Randwick
Guineas however we have NOT ruled out the
All Star Mile yet," Freedman Racing said on
Twitter. "He has come through his 2nd placing
in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes in good order and
we look forward to getting him back to 1600m."
Sisstar could take on sisterSisstar (Zoustar) put herself in the reckoning
for an intriguing clash with her more famous
sister, Sunlight, after posting an eye-catching
performance in a trial at Flemington yesterday.
"It would be a good story if they could quinella
it," co-trainer Tony McEvoy told Racing.com
after nominating the Robert Sangster Stakes
(Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville on May 2 as
a possible target for the three-year-old who
got the better of Group 1 winners Exceedance
(Exceed And Excel) and Despatch (Written
Tycoon) in her jump-out over 800 metres.
"Carrying level weights with those horses
today really pleased me," McEvoy added. "She
showed today she just loves that straight track.
She's an awkward-going filly anyway and I think
the straight allows her to be more balanced.”
Black Caviar’s daughter trials at FlemingtonReady For Caviar (More Than Ready) could
make her debut in stakes company next month
after the daughter of Black Caviar (Bel Esprit)
pleased her connections in her jump-out
at Flemington. "We'll give her a gallop away
from Flemington next week - maybe go to The
Valley - before deciding whether we go to the
races or the paddock," co-trainer David Hayes
told Racing.com after the juvenile won her
800 metre jump-out comfortably. “Of course,
no comparisons with her mother - nothing
compares - but she certainly does look like
she'll win plenty of races. You had to be
happy the way she strode out.” Hayes said the
Redoute’s Choice Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at
Caulfield on March 14 is now a possibility for
Ready For Caviar.
Adelaide Cup nominations closedA total of 34 horses have been nominated for
the Adelaide Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) which takes
place at Morphettville on March 9. All bar six of
the entries have been allotted the 53 kilograms
minimum, with the weights headed by the Mike
Moroney-trained veteran Vengeur Masque
(Monsun), who was allocated 59 kilograms.
The eight-year-old lines up in the Roy Higgins
Quality (2600m) at Flemington today, a race in
which all nine runners carry a nomination for
the Morphettville marathon.
Clarken to open Ballarat baseLeading South Australian trainer Will Clarken
is set to open up a second base at Ballarat. The
expansion comes in Clarken Racing's tenth year
in operation, with Racing Victoria approving
the application for the stable that currently sits
third in the South Australia Metro Premiership.
Clarken expects to have the Ballarat stable up
and running within the next three months.

Marsh out for Derby upsetStephen Marsh is hopeful of causing another
upset in today's New Zealand Derby (Gr 1,
2400m) at Ellerslie, 12 months on from the
shock win of the trainer’s $105 chance Crown
Prosecutor (Medaglia D’Oro). Marsh relies on
Avondale Guineas (Gr 2, 2100m) runner-up
Scorpz (Charm Spirit) this time around, and
while he is only a fraction of the price of last
year’s winner, he still looks to fast a tough task
against favourites Dragon Leap (Pierro) and
Two Illicit (Jimmy Choux). "I was really happy
with the run. He'd gone first-up at a mile at Te
Aroha and just went into the Avondale Guineas
a little above himself," said Marsh. "He just
over-did it on a slow pace but he's trained on
really well. His draw (barrier two) might be a
little tricky but we're very happy with him. His
work this week has been terrific."

Six for DominusUS raider Parsimony (4 c ex Lil Cora Tee by Lil.
E Tee) showed a good turn of foot as he pulled
clear of his rivals late on to bag the Curlin Stakes
(Listed, 2000m) on Meydan’s dirt track and in
the process provided his sire Dominus (Smart
Strike) with a sixth individual stakes winner.
Completing a clean sweep of stakes races on
the Thursday card for jockey William Buick, the
Doug O’Neill-trained four-year-old defeated
Today (Drosselmeyer) by two and three
quarter lengths, with the same margin back
to Ambassadorial (Elusive Quality) in third.
Parsimony has now won two races in 22 starts
and has a second in the Los Alamitos Derby
(Gr 3, 9f) among his haul of seven runner-up
spots. Dominus stands at Spendthrift for a fee
of US$5,000.
Advisor backs up
Secret Advisor (6 g Dubawi - Sub Rose by
Galileo) made it two wins in two starts since
returning to action when he registered his most
notable success to date by taking out the Nad
Al Sheba Trophy (Gr 3, 2810m) at Meydan on
Thursday. The Charlie Appleby-trained six-
year-old followed up his recent win over the
course and distance in a Listed race when
running on well under William Buick to beat
runner-up Dubai Future (Dubawi) by a length
and a quarter, with the same gap back to the
third home, Dubai Horizon (Poet’s Voice).
Secret Advisor has now won four of his ten starts
in an injury-plagued career, and also finished
third behind Europe’s star stayer Stradivarius
(Sea The Stars) in a Group 2 at Royal Ascot as a
three-year-old.
Wisdom doubles stakes tally
A game front-running performance from Well
Of Wisdom (3 c Oasis Dream - Alessandria by
Sunday SIlence) saw the three-year-old double
his tally of his stakes victory as he held on to take
out Thursday’s Meydan Classic (Listed, 1600m).
Making all under William Buick for Charlie
Appleby, Well Of Wisdom saw off the challenge
of Silent Night (Night Of Thunder) to win by a
neck, with Light Blush (Kodiac) another half a
length away in third. The half-brother to today’s
leading Chipping Norton Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m)
hopeful Avilius (Pivotal) has now won three of
his right starts.

Lindsey Smith has pulled off
a remarkable training feat by
managing to rejuvenate the
once retired Black Heart Bart
(Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and
second Underwood Stakes (1800m) - three
years on from his first victory in the Caulfield
feature.
Western Australian Smith took over the
Warrnambool stables once owned by Black
Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir
and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt
to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career.
Smith conceded that he was not overly
confident that Black Heart Bart would make
it back to the races until an encouraging
Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month.
"Before he trialled I started to doubt, but
then he trialled well," Smith said.
"His first race was good and then his second
run was plain, but we thought getting him up to
the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't
be chasing all the time.
"It's a good result." Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING
Dunn gets job doneon RenewalWayne Hawkes believes the key to Renewal’s
Listed win was Dwayne Dunn not panicking
despite being last and a long way off the leader
Zoustyle. "He had a terrible run in transit but
the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic,"
Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little
bit and he hit the line well." Zoustyle’s trainer
Tony Gollan was ruing the fact that his smart
sprinter missed the stakes win by such a narrow
margin. "It's a big learning curve for him. It's his
first trip away and this was his first time racing
the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I
think it's important if I can just keep him in his
right grade I can keep him progressing along.
We won't aim too high I don't think at this
stage. And I think if we come back this time
next year we're going to have a bona fide Group
1 horse." Morning Briefing page 12 >>

Nature Strip (Nicconi) staked his
claim for a potential shot at The
Everest (1200m) when silencing
his doubters with an impressive
victory in the AJ Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at
The Valley last night.
The Chris Waller-trained gelding
harboured plenty of criticism after his last
start in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m)
when he failed to settle on the front end.
However, he showed he is a bona fide Group
1 horse with an impressive win in the $1

Ridden by James McDonald, Nature Strip
began well from the inside barrier and was able
to hold the inside advantage to eventually lead.
The track record holder over the course

(Gr 2, 1000m) Nature Strip kicked strongly
around the turn and was able to hold off a

A surprisingly slow run Melbourne
Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) on Tuesday
turned Australia’s favourite race
into a sprint home that resulted in
the first five horses crossing the line less than
a length apart in a time that was 8.46 seconds
outside of Kingston Rule’s (Secretariat) track
record.
Even allowing for the fact that the race was
run on a soft 5 track, the time was excessively
slow with the leaders clocking a pedestrian
1:44.80 (13.10) for the first 1600 metres.
The final 1600 metres was naturally quicker
but not dramatically so with that distance
covered in 1:40.23 (12.52 200m rate).
The only serious tempo came into the
$7,750,000 race from the 1000 metres with that
final section clocking 59.86 – then 47.13 (last
800m), 35.08 (last 600m) and 23.60 for the final
400 metres.
And in a bumping, keenly contested
finish the Australian-bred Vow And Declare
(Declaration Of War) got the nod by a head
with Prince Of Arran (Shirocco) placed second
and Il Paradiso (Galileo) placed third after the
relegation of Master Of Reality (Frankel) to
fourth.
Next was the appropriately named Surprise
Baby (Shocking), the other local hope who
returned some of the fastest closing sectionals
of the race in coming from 20th to finish (0.9
lengths) fifth.
Surprise Baby ran his last 1000 metres in
57.86, last 800 metres in 45.68, last 600 metres
in 33.79, last 400 metres in 22.77 with his final
200 metres in 11.36.
The winner Vow And Declare, who worked
in the early stages from his wide barrier and
then obtained a perfect trip in third spot under
an inspired Craig Williams-ride, dug deep to
score clocking 59.85 (last 1000m), 46.95 (last

to the front at the home turn and then dashed
clear to defeat her main rival by two and a
quarter lengths in the time of 1:09.89.
California Zimbol’s early sectionals were
very good. Clocked from the 1000 metres, her
200 metre breakdown was: 11.02, 11.25 (400m
in 22.27), 11.83 (600m in 34.10), 11.00 (800m
in 45.10) and 11.25 to give her a fast final 1000
metre time of 56.35.
It was California Zimbol’s fifth race start,
her third win and her first at stakes level. Her
experienced co-trainer Peter Snowden saying
post-race that connections would now target other
fillies’ features over the Melbourne Spring Carnival,
adding that he had always held her in high regard.
Another winner to impress on the watch
at Caulfield was the Godolphin-raced sprinter
Trekking (Street Cry) who gained an eleventh
hour berth into Saturday’s $14 million The
Everest (1200m) by taking out the Schillachi
Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m).
After racing back in seventh place on the
rails, Trekking saved ground closer to the rails
at the home turn, hit the front at the 100 metres
and then battled strongly to defeat the speedy
Ball Of Muscle (Dubawi) by a long neck.
Time for the 1100 metres was a fast 1:02.32
(11.33 200m rate), equivalent to 1200 metres in
1:07.98.
And Trekking’s sectionals were very smart,
his 200 metre breakdown (from the 1000m)
was: 10.71, 10.50 (400m in 21.21), 10.91 (600m
in 32.12) 10.68 (800m in 42.80) and 11.20 for a
fast final 1000 metres of 54.00.
The winner of the Stradbroke Handicap
(Gr 1, 1400m) in June, Trekking is now in
tomorrow’s Everest with a better chance than
his odds might indicate in a very strong field.
In the Ladbrokes Stakes (registered as
Caulfield Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) the Irish-bred
import Cape Of Good Hope (Galileo) scored a
narrow but very good win in this Group 1 race at
his Australian debut.
After settling in seventh place, one off the
rails, he got into clear running nearing the 200
metres and then came with a strong late bid to
defeat Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) by a short
half head in a time of 2:02.51.
The early tempo was not strong with the
first 1400 metres clocking 1:28.17 (12.59 200m
rate) with the final 600 metres in a quick 34.34
(11.44 200m rate).
That resulted in Cape Of Good Hope
returning fast closing sectionals of 33.74 for his
last 600 metres, 22.19 (last 400m) with his final
200 metres in 11.31.
That was a very smart effort especially
considering it was Cape Of Good Hope’s first
start since racing at Saratoga in August.
It should also be pointed out that the lack
of a solid early tempo proved costly for the
favourite Avilius (Pivotal) who faced the task
of making ground from ninth in the sprint
home.
His late-closing (1.7 lengths) fourth was
therefore full of merit with Avilius clocking fast
fractions of 33.68 (last 600m), 22.19 (last 400m)
and 11.28 for his final 200 metres.

The Anthony Freedman-trained
colt Super Seth (Dundeel) really
showed his talent with impressive
closing sectional times in his
exciting burst to grab victory on the post in
Saturday’s Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).
After settling back in eighth place, tracking
a solid tempo, Super Seth arrived in time to
defeat Alligator Blood (All Too Hard), who had
seemingly held a winning break of five lengths
in the straight, by a nose in a time of 1:36.44.
Super Seth returned the fastest closing
sectionals of the race with his last 1200 metres
in 1:10.73, last 1000 metres in 58.55, last 800
metres in 46.32, last 600 metres in 34.23, and
last 400 metres in 22.56.
But the feature of those times was the 200
metres splits for the last 600 metres: 11.66, 11.25
and 11.31, fractions that quickened off a solid
mid-race tempo.
The runner-up, the David Vandyke-
trained Alligator Blood also deserves
acknowledgement.
He tracked the free-running leader
Roccabascerana (Fighting Sun), went to
the front on turning for home, held a clear
advantage at the 200 metres and was only
caught in the last few strides.
Alligator Blood’s early sectionals were
good, in particular his 1000 metre section of
59.56, from the 1400 metres to the 400 metres.
That mid-race pace was telling for the
favourite Dalasan (Dakakhani) who went
forward from his outside barrier (16) and
settled back in third place, without cover,
behind a solid tempo, so his effort in holding on
for (3.7 lengths) fifth was certainly sound under
the circumstances.
However, there was no such tempo in the
Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), with the
fillies’ classic turning into a sprint home with
Flit (Medaglia d’Oro) claiming a nose victory
from Missile Mantra (Smart Missile) with
Southbank (Fastnet Rock) a short half head
away third.
Time for the 1600 metres was 1m 37.19,
which was almost three seconds outside of the
track record, after the first 1000 metres clocked a
moderate 1:02.26 (12.45 200m rate) with the last
600 metres in a quick 34.93 (11.64 200m rate).
Subsequently, Flit’s rider Hugh Bowman
said the slow pace almost cost his mount
victory, the filly taking a while to accelerate
when a split finally presented in the latter
stages.
The lack of early pace also told significantly
against the runner-up Missile Mantra whose
racing style again saw the Peter and Paul
Snowden-trained filly settle near last before
flashing home in the dying stages for second.
Missile Mantra returned the fastest closing
sectionals of the race with her last 1000 metres
in 58.88, last 800 metres in 46.24, last 600 metres
in 33.98, last 400 metres in 22.40 with her final
200 metres in 11.46.
Earlier in the day, her stablemate
California Zimbol (I Am Invincible) stamped
her potential with an impressive win over the
well-performed Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible)
in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).
Having her second run this preparation,
California Zimbol raced in second place, went

in a keenly contested finish where only a length
separated the first seven at the post.
The winner was the British-bred Chief
Ironside (Lawman) who scored by a short head
from Cliff’s Edge (Canford Cliffs) with Best Of
Days (Azamour) a short head away third in a
time of 1:35.46 (first 1000 metres in 59.41 and
final 600 metres in 36.05).
The runners responsible for the solid tempo
were Dreamforce (Fastnet Rock) who led and
Cliff’s Edge, who raced at his girth, and both did
well considering their early efforts, especially
Cliff’s Edge who fought bravely for second
while Dreamforce was far from disgraced in
finishing (0.7 lengths) fifth.
One to catch the eye in the race was Debt
Agent (Thorn Park), a multiple Group 1 winner
in Singapore who was having his second start
in Australia and he made good late ground for
seventh, beaten only a length.
Debt Agent returned the quickest closing
sectional of the race with his last 1400 metres
in 1:21.64, last 1200 metres in 1:09.90, last 1000
metres in 58.33, last 800 metres in 47.09, last
600 metres in 35.16 and last 400 metres in 24.21.
At Moonee Valley’s Friday night meeting,
the quality filly Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible)
staged a dashing display in taking out the
Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).
Having her third run back, she showed
surprisingly good early pace from barrier two
and after almost leading in the early stages,
she settled in third place on the rails, tracking
a solid tempo.
Craig Williams eased her across heels on
turning for home, she then grabbed the lead
on passing the 100m before going on to score
in good style by three-quarters lengths from the
West Australian Vital Silver (Wanted) in a time
of 1:09.29.
Loving Gaby’s early sectionals were
impressive (from the 1000m): 21.21 (first
200m), 32.61 (first 600m), 45.11 (first 800m) and
56.73 for the final 1000 metres.
However, the last word this week goes to
the Jean Dubois-trained filly See You Soon
(Siyouni) who impressed in winning the
Kirkham Plate, for two-year-olds (1000m) at
Randwick on Saturday.
After a slow beginning, See You Soon was last
early on in the six-horse field before dashing home
to score by a short neck from the promising Peter
and Paul Snowden-trained filly Dame Giselle (I
Am Invincible) in the smart time of 57.77.
In a race that developed into a sprint home,
See You Soon showed a sparkling turn of speed,
clocking 32.89 (last 600m) and 21.62 for her
final 400 metres.
And even taking into account the
amount of fast times at Randwick recently,
closing sectionals of that standard are quite
outstanding, especially by a two-year-old filly
who was having her first race start.
