Just imagine

© 2016, M2M Alliance e. V. 23.11.2016 5

►Just imagine machines not being connected

►Today thousands of interconnected devices

►Milliseconds count

►Connecting devices by cable becomes inefficient

►No way to have wearables or tablet solutions wired

Page 6: INDUSTRY 4.0

(Wireless-)Connectivity drives M2M/IoT

© 2016, M2M Alliance e. V. 23.11.2016 6

►M2M is the technology base to enable IoT and Industry 4.0

►IoT and Industry 4.0 need access to and exchange of data

►Many endpoints or edge devices to connect

►Machine management, sensors, wearables, HMIs, locks, etc.

►Not a single connection technology will make it

►Coexcitance of many wire/wireless technologies

►E-vehicles or autonomous driving is not possible without connectivity

The opportunity is massive

© 2016, M2M Alliance e. V. 23.11.2016 7

►In the past M2M was an engineering driven exception based solution

►Wireless connectivity became more widely accepted with afordable, reliable and

omnipresent networks

►M2M is the technology enabler for new processes and business cases

►On the foundation of M2M now IoT business solutions are created

►Enabling Industry 4.0

What is the opportunity

© 2016, M2M Alliance e. V. 23.11.2016 8

►The obvious: smart city, consumer wearables, connected cars, etc.

►Equally important is efficient future proven manufacturing - Industry 4.0

►The need to be connected and learn across production steps, sites, regions

►Intelligent self-learning and healing systems or predictive maintenance

►Data collection, management, analytics, information exchange across sites and industries

►Cloud technology being the information hub

Global Challenge

© 2016, M2M Alliance e. V. 23.11.2016 9

►Cables, protection or proprietary solutions will not solve it

►Lot of wireless standards to manage (GSM, LTE, ZigBee, Sigfox,…)

►Public infrastructure (GSM/LTE) vs. private infrastructure (Tetra, Sigfox,..)

►Country specific frequencies (40+ LTE worldwide + combinations)

►Multiple technologies to combine

►Need for cloud services, but data has to stay in country

►Different expectations, laws, regulations, cerifications

►Global single solution hard to achieve

Page 10: INDUSTRY 4.0

Inevitable

© 2016, M2M Alliance e. V. 23.11.2016 10

►Highest possible interoperability between systems

►(Open)Standards help to connect systems that are not meant to be connected

►Standard based scalable end-to-end security systems

►Need for unified standards (OPC OA, IIC, oneM2M, ETSI, GSMA..) and certifications

►Make service applications availabe via cloud

►Reduce or remove regional specifics

Germany / Japan

© 2016, M2M Alliance e. V. 23.11.2016 11

►Both countries:

►Work on high industry standards and have the power to influence the market

►Quality engineering and industrial manufacturing at high efficiency levels

►Innovation and advanced technology research to stay ahead

►Partner for success

►In country partners are needed to understand market needs and potential

►M2M, IoT and Industry 4.0 only work with strong partner networks

Things ahead

© 2016, M2M Alliance e. V. 23.11.2016 12

►M2M and IoT is not all about high bandwidth

About the right technology for an application

LPWA ( LTE-M, NB-IOT,…)

►Intelligent combination of technologies

►Cloud technologies provide the global business innovation

►IoT/cloud adds the innovation of software and data management

►Open source, open hardware adds new dynamic players

Arduino, RasperryPI, Beaglebone, mangOH

Eclipse, Linux
