At AFFORD, safety comes first. Your job and safety go hand in hand.

This Induction has been prepared to inform you of general and site specific safety issues when working on AFFORD sites.

Use the [left] and [right] arrow buttons at the bottom left of each slide to scroll through the presentation.

You will be asked to complete an assessment at the end of the presentation and you will not be permitted to enter the site until you have successfully answered the questionnaire so please pay attention.

This induction should take approximately 20 minutes.

Site Security

• Prior to entering the Factory for the first time, all contractors must complete the Site Induction, including the assessment.

• You will need to refresh your induction annually and/or if any significant changes are introduced to AFFORD policies and procedures.

• On successful completion of the Site Induction, a numbered contractors ‘induction pass’ will be issued. You must have this pass on you each time you attend the site.

• Persons issued with an induction pass are required to show the pass when signing in for each site visit.

• Reception is open between 8:00 am & 5.00 pm weekdays. • Whilst on site individuals are responsible to comply with AFFORD and

site specific safety and security procedures.

On Arrival / Departure from Site

• AFFORD has a sign in/out policy to control access to the site. The sign in register is also used in in case of emergencies to ensure all personnel are evacuated safely.

• All contractors are required to enter the site via Reception and sign in before proceeding to relevant work locations.

• Please notify the Site Contact person that you have arrived and request authorisation to commence work – they may need to provide clear access to your task location.

• Please remember to return to Reception and sign out EVERY TIME you leave the site, whether you are fetching tools and materials and returning or when leaving at the completion of the work.

Site Security Cameras

• For the safety of all our Visitors, Contractors and Employees, security cameras are located at strategic points around the Factory.

• All areas that are monitored by cameras are clearly sign posted.

• Any suspicious behaviour or unauthorised entry to the site should be reported immediately to the relevant manager responsible on site.

OHS Policy• The OHS Policy provides guidance for establishing a safe

workplace• Afford is committed to providing a Healthy and Safe working

environment for all Afford Personnel, Contractors and Visitors. • This policy is supported by an OHS management system

(OHSMS), which is subject to ongoing review and continuous improvement. It establishes AFFORD’s legal obligations and sets required minimum standards for compliance.

• Employees and contractors are required to comply with all applicable OHS Legislation, Regulations, Codes of Practice and Australian Standards as set out in the OHSMS.

• AFFORD requires consultation with affected parties (through their reps) wherever possible on changes that may affect the Health, Safety and Welfare of Afford Personnel and other interested parties

Return to Work Policy

• The Return to Work Policy provides guidance for enabling return to work after injury.

• Afford is committed to providing Afford Personnel with assistance in the process of Return to Work, in the event of an employee sustaining a work-related injury or illness.

• AFFORD also expects that contractors will provide similar assistance to their employees.

Smoking is prohibited in all buildings and enclosed areas.

Smoking is only allowed outside in designated locations.

Bullying and Harassment

• AFFORD’s Bullying and Harassment Policy establishes guidance for preventing these activities in AFFROD workplaces.

• Afford is committed to providing safe and equitable working conditions for all personnel and clients. It seeks to eliminate bullying, harassment and discrimination from the workplace and ensure that personnel and clients are not subjected to treatment that is hostile and unprofessional.

• AFFORD will provide personnel with the right to complain if they experience bullying or harassment in the course of their dealings with AFFORD.

• Employees and Contractors are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that can not be misconstrued as bullying or harassing other persons.

Alcohol and Other Drugs

• No alcohol or illicit drugs are allowed on site• Illegal behaviour, eg: distributing illegal drugs, will be reported to the

police.• When you present for work on an AFFORD site you must not be

affected by alcohol or drugs – you must be capable of working safely.• If you are taking prescription medications that might affect your safety –

discuss with your supervisor and site contact to ensure you are not exposed to risks to your health or safety and you do not expose others to risks from your actions.

• If you know or suspect you have contracted a contagious disease you must seek medical attention before attending any AFFORD site.

Environment• Contractor work activities must be conducted in such a way as to not

expose AFFORD to prosecutions under environmental legislation. To this end:

• Waste must be disposed of in appropriate receptacles – do not dispose of waste into drainage systems

• Chemicals must be contained, any spillages must be cleaned up before substances enter waterways and drains

• Air quality – control the levels of dust, fumes, etc affecting other persons on site or neighbouring sites

• Water – keep contaminants clear of stormwater drains• Noise – Ensure safety of anyone who may be exposed to unsafe

noise levels. If activities will generate unsafe levels negotiate with site manager to conduct work outside normal operating hours.

Consultation &Communication

• AFFORD acknowledges that OHS consultation provides an opportunity for employees to contribute to the decision making for ensuring their own workplace, health, safety and welfare.

• In recognition of this, AFFORD will provide its employees with relevant information help them understand their obligations.

• To the extent that it is practical, AFFORD will consult and communicate with contractors on issues that may affect the health or safety of contractor employees.

• If you wish to provide or obtain OHS related information please consult your site contact in the first instance.

Traffic ManagementWhether you are driving onto site or entering as a pedestrian there are some things to understand and comply with in relation to traffic onto and around the site.

• Pedestrians• Entering site: walking – please use pedestrian gates and marked

walkways. • Moving around site – use marked walkways and check for mobile

plant around blind corners and through doorways• Motor Vehicles and Mobile Plant

• Entering Site: driving – please be alert to other vehicles (cars and trucks) entering and leaving the premises and mobile plant (forklifts and pallet jacks) moving around on driveways and through factory doorways.

• Take your time when cornering or moving through doorways and gateways.

Pedestrian Traffic• All employees and contractors must wear a high visibility

vest or shirt and safety shoes at all times in the Warehouse area.

• Inside the Factory:• When moving through the Factory, you must use

service walkways.

• On the site:• All visitors and employees must use and follow the

designated walkways through the site.

Motor Vehicles & Mobile Plant

Be AWARE:• There are forklifts and pallet jacks in use on this site.• You need to wear a hi-vis vest or clothing and you need to be alert

when moving through the worksite• If you are working on or near roadways and service pathways you

need to use barriers or witches hats to establish exclusion zones around your work location.

Motor Vehicles & Mobile Plant

Driver responsibilities:• Be properly licensed for the type of vehicle being

operated.• Know and observe the following:

• Give way to pedestrians • Expect the unexpected and be patient – we

employ people with disabilities - they may take more time to respond than other pedestrians

• All loads transported must be stable and secured.

• Please follow any directional signs and speed limits.

Parking & Vehicle Access to Site

• Please be aware there is no parking for passenger vehicles anywhere on site except in marked bays. If parking bays are full you will need to park on the road.

• If you need to bring a work vehicle, eg a van or ute, on site to aid in the completion of your work, you will need to liaise through the contract manager and negotiate with the relevant Site Manager.

• Unless or until the Site Manager authorises your work vehicle to be on site you MUST NOT bring it on site.

Emergency Evacuation

• Before commencing work, you need to make yourself familiar with the assembly area for the site you are working on and emergency exits relevant to your location in the site.

• Refer to the site evacuation plans that are posted around the site at key locations

• Refer to the site plan alongside this computer• When you arrive at your work location, check around for clear/safe

pathways to your nearest exits. • Make sure you identify at least 2 alternate pathways/exits.

Emergencies• If you become aware of a situation requiring emergency action:

• Sound the alarm• If it is safe to do so - isolate any machinery or energy sources that

are involved or may cause further problems• Render aid to any injured persons• Comply with directions from emergency wardens and first aiders

Emergency Evacuation

In an emergency where evacuation is required:

• an alarm siren or bell is sounded. Prepare to evacuate but wait for further instructions. Do not exit the site unless instructed to do so by a Fire Warden.

• The Fire Warden will direct you to the nearest fire exit.• On exiting, please proceed to the assembly point and

ensure your name is checked off.• Please remain at the assembly point until further

instructions from the fire warden or emergency services personnel.

First Aid • First Aid Officers on site are trained and possess First Aid

qualifications. • Should you require first aid treatment contact a First Aider, Supervisor

or a staff member as soon as possible.• First Aid stations are identified with a white cross on a green sign.• Please ensure your injury details are entered in the injury register.

Hazard Reporting

• HAZARDS are situations or conditions that have the potential to cause injury to people and/or damage to property.

• The prevention of accidents starts with identifying hazards so that actions can be taken to eliminate or reduce the risk that an incident will occur and the likely degree of damage (or consequences) that might result.

• Contractors, along with all employees in our workplace, are required to report hazards which could cause injury and damage.

• Your assistance in recognising and reporting hazards is essential to ensure everyone's health and safety.

• Hazard/Incident Report Forms are available from any supervisor or manager in the area where you are working.

• When completed, hand the report to a supervisor or manager for follow-up.

Incident Reporting• INCIDENTS are unplanned events that may, or may not, result in

injury or damage. They include both near misses and accidents.• Near Misses (or near hits) are incidents where no injury or damage

occurs – but could have except for a fraction of distance or timing making the difference.

• Accidents are incidents where people are injured and/or property is damaged. An injury could be as simple as a bump on the head or a grazed finger, or it could be as serious as an amputated limb.

• Near misses could be accidents next time if action is not taken to prevent them recurring.

• If you experience or witness an incident please complete a Hazard & Incident Report Form as soon as possible so that steps can be taken to prevent it happening again.

Manual Handling

• Manual Handling means any activity requiring the use of force exerted by a person to lift, lower, push, pull, carry or otherwise move, hold or restrain any animate or inanimate object.

• Manual Handling is the cause of the highest group of injuries across all industries. But contrary to popular perception, lifting and carrying do not cause all of these injuries.

• Keeping your spine straight is important when lifting and lowering items but you can be injured by other factors when manual handling ---

• Consider your posture when applying force to lift, move or position an item; Leg muscles should be used to lift vertically – sitting down takes leg muscles out of play and increases the pressure on your spine.

• If your back or neck is bent because you cannot stand straight when applying pressure to lift, lower, move or restrain an item you face a real risk of injuring your back.

Manual HandlingBut lifting and carrying are not the only actions when manual handling so also consider ---

• trying to lift lower or move an item that is too heavy or bulky, even when keeping your back straight, can cause overloading of muscles and joint structures

• the force required to push or pull an item and the effect on your muscles and joint structures when doing so; Pushing will limit the pressure you can apply due to your body weight but pulling can overstretch muscles, tendons and ligaments – hence pushing is usually safer than pulling.

• the forces applied through muscles when holding something still (stasis) for long periods – circulation to those muscles is restricted hence fuel supply and waste removal is impeded and can cause damage to muscles.

• The forces applied through repetitive actions (dynamics) can cause muscle damage too (repetitive strain injuries or RSI)

Take appropriate steps to limit the potential for injuries from manual handling activities – if necessary ask for help.

Plant & Equipment

Generally speaking AFFORD plant and machinery is fairly simple in design and operation. However there are still risks associated with these items.

Therefore:• Do not operate any equipment unless authorised to do so. When

authorised always check to see that no one will be in danger whilst you are using the equipment.

• Guards and electronic safety switches on machinery are provided for your protection. They must be only removed by authorised personnel, following the correct procedures.

• Machines must be switched off after use at the main switch; • All machinery must be switched off when it is being cleaned or

maintained.

Plant & Equipment

Other things to consider when working on, with or near plant and machinery are:

• Beware of conveyors. Do not take a short cut under or over a conveyor unless steps are provided. Never handle a moving conveyor belt.

• Promptly report any electrical or mechanical faults to a Supervisor. Unauthorised personnel must not attempt any electrical or major mechanical repairs.

• Compressed air must be used with extreme care. Do not use it to ‘blow down’ dust or other particulates from machines or from your clothing or body parts.

• When using compressed air wear safety glasses, hearing protection and, if necessary, a dust mask and ensure that hoses are in good condition.

Lockout Tag System

• The controls should be isolated, locked and tagged before cleaning of equipment, maintenance or repair work commences.

• The warning system involves the use of tags:• Danger Tags: designed for personal protection of the

individual.• Out of Service Tags: designed to prevent the use of plant

or machinery which is out or service for some reason.

• Do not operate any switch or device when there is a danger tag attached. Any contractor/employee who ignores or tampers with a tag will be subject to disciplinary action.

• Isolation procedures for equipment are necessary to maintain a safe work environment and involves the isolation of electrical switches, mechanical controls and liquid / gas valves.

Energy

• All employees and contractors are responsible for reducing unnecessary energy consumption on-site.

• Always check with your Supervisor before switching off any equipment to ensure it is safe to do so.

• Always check your work area before finishing, to ensure all applicable equipment has been switched off.

• Report all air leaks in air lines immediately to you supervisor or person responsible on-site for corrective action.

Hazardous Substances

• No hazardous substances are to be introduced to the site without the prior approval of the person responsible on-site.

• Approval for hazardous substances requires they must be accompanied with a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) which lists requirements for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), First Aid, medical treatment advice and other safety information.

Work Activities• Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs)• Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS)• Safe Work Procedures (SWPs)

• Whatever name you know them by, each task you undertake should be covered by one of these documents. And you must have a copy on hand for reference whilst you are completing your work.

• You must be adhering to the risk controls identified by the relevant document and you must use any identified equipment in accordance with it too.

HousekeepingAFFORD is responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace, but you share the responsibility for it’s maintenance. Housekeeping is not just the cleaner’s task - it is an essential part of safe working procedures.

REMEMBER: THE STANDARD YOU WALK PAST IS THE STANDARD YOU SET

• Your responsibility is to:• Keep all traffic areas, entry and exit points and fire appliances free

from obstruction.• Clean up any spills, oils, grease, etc immediately.• Do not allow discarded materials to accumulate on the floor.• Use the garbage bins provided.• Plan your work to ensure you have all of the materials and tools

required.• Ensure compliance with OHS and environment policies and

procedures.

Housekeeping and Tool Safety

• Please ensure you keep you tools secure when not in use.• Please keep your tool boxes and materials tidy and under control to

prevent mess, damage and theft.• Some people on site may be curious and want to ‘play’ with your

equipment if you leave it where they can reach it.

High Risk WorkCertain types of work involve higher than average risks and as a result have minimum standards of management established by law.

At AFFORD these tasks include:• Working on Electrical installations• Work in or on Confined Spaces• Work at Heights where a fall greater than 2 metres is possible• Hot Work – arc or gas welding, gas cutting and grinding• Construction & Excavation

Permit to Work • For any tasks involving these high risk activities a risk assessment

must be documented, and a permit to work must be completed and authorised by the person responsible on-site.

• Relevant licences, permits and evidence of training must be provided as part of the risk assessment process.

• You may not commence your work until this process has been completed.

Licences & Permits

If your work activities involve any of the following on AFFORD work sites you will need to provide evidence of current licences and permits or relevant training qualifications before commencing work:

• Motor Vehicle operations• Mobile Plant operations – forklifts, cherry pickers, scissor lifts etc• Electrical work• Plumbing/Gas Fitting• Air Conditioning• Work in confined spaces

Electric Power Tools

• All portable electrical appliances used on AFFORD sites must carry current Test Tags in accordance with WorkCover standards.

• All portable electrical appliances should be inspected for damage to power cord, switches and insulation prior to connecting to an AFFORD power outlet.

• Use of a portable Residual Current Device (RCD) is also required.

Personal Safety

• Protective equipment must be worn in all situations where required. • Wear close-fitting clothing, keep your shirt tucked in, and avoid loose

sleeves. • If you require to wear sweaters and/or loose cardigans to keep warm,

these must be worn under full covering overalls when working on or near moving machinery.

• Enclosed safety footwear, with toe caps, is to be worn at all times within manufacturing and processing areas.

• Wear hearing protection when working in signposted areas.• Keep your working area clean and tidy.• Look where you are going and keep to walkways when moving about.• Riding (other than as driver) on forklifts is illegal and forbidden.

Canteen & Amenities

•The amenities area is cleaned daily. We ask you to maintain the lunch rooms and appliances in a clean and sanitary manner at all times.

•Please clean up after use of any the facilities provided.

•Drink, snack and food machines are available, along with refrigerators, hot water and utensils.

•Please place all rubbish in the bins provided and place used crockery and cutlery in the dishwashers provided.

Work Area Behavior• Behaviour that may be acceptable outside work can be extremely

dangerous and unacceptable in the workplace (eg. on concrete floors, near sharp steel edges and around moving machinery).

• Therefore:• Walk. Do not run.• No horseplay especially with fire, electricity, compressed air or water

hoses.• Do not start or become involved in horseplay, skylarking or practical

joking.• Never throw things about your workplace.• Do not distract anyone who is concentrating on their job.

• The above behaviour is dangerous, will not be tolerated, and may result in disciplinary action.
