No playground for kidsSir, Does the Government or the Corporation have the

absolute right to snatch away a children’s playground fordumping materials for public utility purposes? Do the childrenof Chennai have a right for a playground in their locality? I amnot sure.

There is rather, there was, a playground for children in theLotus Colony area of Nandanam. A decade ago it was handedover to some contractor for dumping sewage. He held on to itfor several years. It was highlighted in Mambalam Times also.A couple of years ago it was cleared but remained unfit forplaying purposes. The ground was rough with waste lyingaround. Some months back children started playing despiteunplayable conditions. Now, suddenly, the ground has againbeen taken over by some contractor for dumping his utilitymaterials. Our Government claims to be deeply interested inpromoting sports. Huge amounts are awarded to sports per-sons after they achieve high laurels. What about the funda-mentals? Where will children enjoy themselves playing andrunning around. Are they to play on the streets only endanger-ing their lives against oncoming cars and other vehicles?

How does a civilised Government tackle the issue of helpingthe contractors for dumping their wares. By depriving the kidsof their right to play in a ground?

Senior citizens forced to standSir, I was surprisingly shocked to see senior citizens being

made to stand at the special counter for them in the ground floorof Indian Bank’s West Mambalam branch.

The special counter for senior citizens was opened when thebranch shifted to its present premises to prevent elderlypeople from waiting in queues. Though there is a token systemfor the general counters upstairs, there is no such system forsenior citizens and they have to stand in queues.
