B. ABOUT SUSENAS 2000 AND DATA FILES

Indonesia Social and Economic Survey (Susenas 2000) was a nationwide survey conducted to collect information on social and economics indices. It serves as a main source of monitoring the social and economic progress in the society. Susenas was conducted on an annual basis since 1963. Since 1992, in addition to a basic social and economic questionnaire (core), a deeper focused questionnaire was introduced separately (module). A module is intended to gather more detailed information on specific topics, especially on data that changed less frequently than a year. There are three modules of Susenas and each module is added in a three-year cycle. In 2000, the module’s topic is social culture and education. Sampling Method The SUSENAS data is collected using a stratified multi-stage cluster sampling with two strata (urban and rural area) for each district/municipality. Within each district/municipality, a 2-stage cluster sampling is applied to urban areas, while rural areas sampling follows a 3-stage cluster sampling design. Urban areas are divided into census blocks (CBs), each comprises of about 100 households. The first stage of the sampling comprises choosing a number of CBs using linear systematic sampling. From each selected census blocks, sixteen households are selected for interview by using linear systematic sampling. For rural areas, a number of subdistricts (Kecamatan) were selected from the list using the “proportional to size” (PPS) principle, so that the probability of a sub-district being selected is proportional to its size (i.e. number of households). From each selected sub-district, a number of census blocks were selected. Then, from each of these selected CBs sixteen households are selected for interview by using linear systematic sampling Questionnaire There are two sets of questionnaire in Susenas 2000. 1. Core questionnaire (form VSEN2000.K) which constitutes of questions regarding basic

social and economic conditions. The information gathered from this questionnaire often referred as Susenas Core. Susenas core was conducted annually with slight changes of questions (addition, deletion or modification) over the years. Data from this core component is representative up to district/city level. The sampling unit in Susenas Core are household as well as individual representing household and individual characteristic, respectively.

2. Module Questionnaire (form VSEN2000.MSBP) which constitutes of detail questions regarding social, culture and education (referred as Susenas Module). This social, culture and education questionnaire was designed to be conducted every three years. Data from this module component is representative at province level. The sampling unit in Susenas Module are household as well as individual representing household and individual characteristic, respectively.
