The Opening Ceremony
Among the best economies of the G20, Indonesia is the largest economy in the Association
of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and ASEAN is among the most dynamic regions in
the world. Awarded Investment Grade rating by the Standard & Poor’s (S&P), Indonesia
is bolstering infrastructure development and expansion projects across the world’s
largest archipelago, that altogether poses a new challenge in market supply – demand
for building and finishing materials. At the same time, the ongoing “One Million Houses”
development program by the government has driven the rising demand for building and
finishing materials.
As expected, capital Jakarta and its greater areas show the largest and fastest rate of
urban development. However, the drawback of the mobilization itself created major
challenges, namely traffic congestion, dense population, floods, pollution, high energy and
water consumption. Meanwhile, a great concern of land availability decreases, while the
price of the property within Jakarta increases.
The private sector plays a leading role in building up satellite cities complemented with
commercial, industrial, education and entertainment centers, which has self-sustaining
features, smart technology, and integrated transportation. New urban developments
have been driven by the growing intra-city and inter-city infrastructure developments
interconnecting Jakarta with cities of Bogor, Tangerang, Bekasi, Depok (Jabodetabek).
