Indian Navy warship INS Talwar yesterday reached New Mangalore Port with

the first consignment of 50 tonnes of oxygen from Bahrain.

The Kingdom sent a ship-ment of two cryogenic con-

tainers of liquid oxygen and medical equipment to help India in its fight against coro-navirus (COVID-19).

Two Indian Navy ships col-lected the medical supplies at the Khalifa Bin Salman Port on April 30.

Royal Order adjourns fifth legislative term third session

issued Royal Order 21/2021 bringing to a close the third session of the fifth legisla-tive term of the Shura and Representatives Councils on May 11.

The order will be pub-lished in the Official Ga-zette, the Order stipulated.

HM the King and His Roy-al Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, received cables of thanks from Shura Council Chairman Ali bin Saleh Al Saleh and Council of Rep-resentatives Speaker Fawzia bint Abdulla Zainal.

On behalf of Shura Coun-cil members, Al Saleh hailed the royal support to the legislative branch of gov-ernment for the sake of the Kingdom and its loyal peo-ple to continue the march of development and progress.

Decree establishes General Sports AuthorityTDT | Manama

His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa yesterday is-

sued Decree 61/2021, establish-ing the General Sports Authority (GSA).

The General Sports Author-ity shall be affiliated with the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports.

The minister in charge of sports affairs shall be respon-

sible for GSA before the Cabinet and the Legislative Branch.

The GSA shall have a board of directors comprising nine mem-bers, including the chairman, the deputy chairman and the minis-ter. They will be appointed as per a royal decree, based on the nom-ination of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, and serve for a renewable four-year term.

It shall also have a chief exec-utive officer, appointed as per a

royal decree, based on the nom-ination of the board of trustees and the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports.

His Majesty also issued decree 63 of 2021 repealing clause 5 of paragraph 4 of article 1 of decree 17 of 2019, restructuring the Min-istry of Youth and Sport Affairs.

Half a million people have so far taken two COVID-19

vaccine doses and completed a two-week period after the second dose, making up 44% of the population eligible for vac-cination, said the Ministry of Health. In a statement yester-day, the Ministry said that the number of vaccinated people reflects the extent of aware-

ness and responsibility among citizens and residents of the importance of vaccination and its role in supporting national efforts to combat the pandemic.

The drive also confirms the positive response and interac-tion with the national vaccina-tion campaign and its goals in immunising society and pre-serving the safety of everyone, said the Ministry.

Council of Representatives Speaker Fawzia bint Ab-

dulla Zainal has lauded Bah-rain’s rich and advanced human rights record and the ongoing efforts to consolidate it, thanks to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s support.

The Speaker expressed the parliament’s full apprecia-tion of the efforts made by the government, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to develop the human rights sys-tem in the kingdom.

She described the coun-try’s pioneering human rights achievements as distinguished success stories, citing its en-deavours to counter the chal-lenges of the coronavirus pan-demic, through ensuring the safety and health of the citizens and residents, as well as the provision of health care and services for everyone.

Speaker Zainal highlighted the landmark human rights projects, initiatives and pro-grammes launched by Bahrain in the human rights field, in addition to the respect for the

rights of inmates and the pro-vision of the necessary health care and services for them at the Correction and Rehabili-tation Centre, in accordance with a humanitarian vision and legal approach adopted by the Interior Ministry.

The Speaker underlined the Representatives Council’s keen-ness to enhance its cooperation with the national human rights institutions and associations to promote the human rights culture, preserve gains, defend

the national capabilities and highlight the national achieve-ments locally and abroad, in accordance with a joint action plan based on Bahrain’s pio-neering legislative and human rights system, advanced exec-utive procedures, integrated comprehensive projects and initiatives and widely-appre-ciated national human rights institutions and organisations.

She made the statements while receiving yesterday, in the presence of the Chairman of the Human Rights Committee at the Council of Representa-tives, MP Ammar Al Bannai, the President of the Arab Union for Human Rights (AUHR), Isa Al Arabi. The two sides discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the Council of Repre-sentatives and the AUHR so as to contribute to highlighting Bah-rain’s human rights achieve-ments to the entire world, in accordance with a bilateral ac-tion plan.

Al Arabi praised the Coun-cil’s interest in human rights in the kingdom, and keenness to highlight Bahrain’s landmark achievements in this regard through parliamentary diplo-macy.

New COVID-19 treatment unit at Salmaniya launched

al Medical Taskforce for Combating the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Chairman Lieu-tenant-General Dr Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa inaugurated an inte-grated unit for treating active COVID-19 cases at Salmaniya Medical Complex.

Shaikh Mohammed com-mended the steady and con-tinuous support of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khal-ifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, in providing all resources and capabilities to confront the pandemic.

Shaikh Mohammed stressed

that the opening of the unit, to be managed by the Govern-ment Hospitals, is in line with HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister’s order regard-ing the necessity of preserving the capacity for isolation and treatment that provides the services required for all pa-tients throughout all the stages of dealing with the virus.

It is also within the efforts of the national taskforce led by HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister to confront the coronavirus to boost pre-paredness and planning and to ensure hospital capacity, he added.

Shaikh Mohammed said that the current occupancy rate of 59% is reassuring for dealing with the virus in terms of ex-amination and treatment.

Appeals Court rejects embezzlement case for lack of evidenceTDT | Manama

The Appeals Court re-jected an embezzle-

ment case filed by an own-er of a cleaning company against his partner, citing lack of proof.

The duo reportedly estab-lished the company in 2005 but decided to expand by launching a new company in 2010 under the name of the defendant.

However, their disagree-ments grew, prompting the plaintiff to file a law-suit against his partner accusing him of pocketing BD1,121,955.

He told the court that the defendant was man-aging the company and he requested him to sign blank cheques to ensure the smoothness of operations in the company.

According to the plain-tiff ’s statements before prosecutors, he took advan-tage of the signed cheques and deposited them into the account of another compa-ny that he owned.

“He stole more than BD1 million of the com-pany’s money. We want-ed to expand the compa-ny but he badly exploited my faith in him and took the money for himself,” he said.

The defendant also sum-moned witnesses who tes-tified in his favour. Never-theless, the High Criminal Court and the High Appeals Court rejected the lawsuit after it was found that the two were still dealing with each other, while an accounting expert refuted the plaintiff ’s claims that his partner embezzled the said amount.

BDF Commander-in-Chief receives Commander of US Central Command

Bahrain Defence Force (BDF) Commander-in-Chief Field Marshal Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa received General Kenneth F McKenzie Jr, Commander of the United States Central Command. Defense Affairs Minister Lieutenant General Abdullah bin Hassan Al Nuaimi, and BDF Chief-of-Staff Lieutenant-General Theyab bin Saqr Al Nuaimi, were present. The Commander-in-Chief praised the cooperation between Bahrain and the US and the development and growth it is witnessing at all levels, especially in the military field and the continuous coordination in the defense field.

Bahrain’s Ambassador to Russia Ahmed Abdulrahman Al Saati has participated in the meeting held by the Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Dr Riyad Al Maliki with Arab Ambassadors accredited in Moscow as part of his official visit to the Russian capital. Al Maliki briefed the ambassadors on the developments related to Palestine, especially with regard to the decision of President Mahmoud Abbas to postpone the legislative elections due to Israeli authorities preventing them in East Jerusalem. The Minister also highlighted the international efforts of the Palestinian Authority to prioritise the Palestinian issue.

Construction of Mal Allah Mosque and Yusef Abdullah Janahi Hall set to begin this month

Diyar Al Muharraq, one of the largest real estate development companies

in the Kingdom of Bahrain, is constructing a new mosque and a banquet hall in the Sarat resi-dential project.

They are to be named the Mal Allah Mosque and the late Yusef Abdullah Janahi Hall.

This step comes with Diyar Al Muharraq’s endeavours to provide all facilities that reflect the model of an integrated mod-ern city.

The construction of the mosque has been prepared as part of the master plan for Di-yar Al Muharraq, as the project supports the aspirations and en-deavours of Diyar Al Muharraq Company to provide all facilities that improve the residents’ life-style, including the construc-tion of spacious and integrated mosques to serve residents and visitors alike.

Tamam Contracting Company has been appointed to supervise the construction of the mosque and hall after meeting all the required conditions and stand-ards. The company is starting to build the mosque this month.

The Mal Allah Mosque will be built on an area of about 844 square metres, and it will consist of a prayer hall for men and another for women and a large parking area, in addition to a hall in the name of the late Yusef Abdullah Janahi, which is dedicated to holding various religious and social events.

Upon completion of its con-struction, the mosque will serve approximately 160 housing units in the area, and will have a suitable capacity to receive

more than 200 worshippers at one time.

The design of the Mal Allah Mosque is characterised by the traditional Bahraini character, while adding some modern touches that add more distinc-tion to its interior and exterior appearance.

The hall of the late Youssef Abdullah Janahi will be distin-guished by a design that is de-rived from the ancient Bahraini architecture. Simple ornamenta-tion will also be adopted, which is in line with the original Bah-raini and Islamic architecture.

Diyar Al Muharraq is one of the largest integrated residen-tial cities in the Kingdom of Bahrain. This comes alongside Diyar Al Muharraq’s unique blend of residential, commer-cial, entertainment and health facilities that root the model of an integrated and futuristic modern city.

The Ministry of Transporta-tion and Communications’

Ports and Maritime Affairs has announced the launch of a pack-age of new electronic services for small vessels on the national e-government portal bahrain.bh, in cooperation with the In-formation and eGovernment Authority (iGA).

The package allows registra-tion of small vessel licences, and

the services include the renewal of the registration of pleasure vessels and their navigation li-cences, and inquiry about the status of the application and electronic payment.

Mayas Al Moataz Billah Al Agha, Director of the Depart-ment of Ship Registration and Seafarers’ Affairs at the Minis-try of Transportation and Com-

munications, said that the Min-istry provides these electronic

services to owners of small ships in an effort to facilitate access by all groups of society to gov-ernment services in an easy and accessible manner.

The services aim to save time and effort, as well as contrib-ute to maintaining public safety by reducing the need to visit government service delivery centres in light of the current situation of the spread of the pandemic.

The provision of these ser-vices comes from the Minis-try’s keenness to achieve digital transformation of the various services it provides to its cus-tomers, in a way that makes its performance more effective and efficient.

Transportation and Tele-communications Minister

Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed held a virtual meeting with UAE Minister of State for Advanced Technology, Chairwoman of the Emirates Scientists Council (ESC) Sarah Al Amiri.

The National Space Science Agency (NSSA) CEO Dr Mo-hamed Ebrahim Al Aseeri and United Arab Emirates Space Agency (UAESA) advisor Ibra-him Hamza Al Qasim were present.

The Minister praised the re-lations between the two coun-tries and the growing cooper-

ation in the fields of space sci-ence and the UAE’s experience in this rapidly growing sector, in addition to the achievements it had accomplished in the field.

Al Amiri praised, in coop-eration with the NSSA, acti-vating the agreements linking the UAESA and the NSSA which aim to promote the growth of the space sector in the two countries.

They discussed joint satellite project and the latest devel-opments related to its launch date, training opportunities in a number of fields related to space science and technology, and future projects.

The NSSA’s CEO emphasised that cooperation between the two sides is developing steadily and contributes to achieving the vision of the two countries’ and to development and prosperity.

The Royal College of Sur-geons in Ireland-Medical

University in Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) has received approv-al from the General Medical Council (GMC) in the United Kingdom allowing RCSI Bah-rain medical graduates to ap-ply for registration to practise in the UK without having to undertake the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) licensing exam-inations.

The examinations are ad-ministered by the Council to ensure that doctors who have received qualifications from abroad have the correct lev-el of knowledge and skills to practise medicine in the UK.

This significant milestone for the university will ease the

process of accessing intern-ship and postgraduate train-ing opportunities for all RCSI Bahrain medical graduates in the UK, regardless of their na-tionality and without the need to take a gap year.

RCSI Bahrain graduates will only have to apply for registra-tion with the GMC through the Relevant European Qualifica-tion (REQ) pathway.

Saudi cuts June crude oil official selling prices for AsiaReuters

Top oil exporter Saudi Ara-bia has cut the June offi-

cial selling prices (OSPs) of all crude grades it sells to Asia, two sources with knowledge of the matter said yesterday.

It set the June OSP for the flagship Arab light crude at $1.7 a barrel above the Oman/Dubai average for Asia, down 10 cents from May and its first price cut since December last year, the sources said.

Saudi Arabia set its Arab Light OSP to Northwest Europe at a discount of $2.90 per bar-

rel against ICE Brent for June, compared with a discount to $2.40 for May, according to a document seen by Reuters.

The OSP to the United States was set at a premium of $1.05 a barrel over Argus Sour Crude Index (ASCI), $0.20 above May’s premium.

Sudan gets $425 million loan to clear African Bank arrearsReuters

its arrears to the Af-rican Development Bank through a $425 million bridge loan provided by Britain, Sweden and Ireland, opening it up to new funding, including an immediate grant of $207 million.

The arrears clearance is Su-dan’s latest step to clear at least $50 billion in debt.

Sudan expects to begin the Highly Indebted Poor Coun-

tries (HIPC) process in June, and France is hosting a debt re-lief conference for the African country on May 17.Sudan was previously able to clear its arrears to the World Bank

through a bridge loan provided by the United States. It must still clear its International Monetary Fund arrears in or-der to proceed with HIPC.

Meme-based virtual cur-rency Dogecoin soared

yesterday to an all-time high, extending its 2021 rally to be-come the fourth-biggest digital coin. Dogecoin, launched as a satirical critique of 2013’s cryptocurrency frenzy, has climbed 41% in the last 24 hours to a record $0.68, ac-cording to CoinMarketCap.

This year alone it has soared over 14,000%, from $0.00468 on Dec. 31, taking it past more widely used cryptocurren-cies such as the Tether sta-blecoin and XRP to become the fourth-largest by market capitalisation.

On Tuesday, the New York crypto exchange Gemini said it would start letting users trade and custody the token.

Some cryptocurrency mar-ket players said its volatil-ity was its main draw, with a mixture of retail investors and market makers fuelling its trading volumes.

“The ugly truth is that a lot of crypto valuations are di-vorced from reality anyway,” said Joseph Edwards, head of research at crypto brokerage Enigma Securities.

“Right now, (Dogecoin) is being seen as it’s always been

Nearly 20 million more people faced food crises

last year amid armed conflict, the COVID-19 pandemic and weather extremes, and the outlook for this year is again grim, according to a report by the Global Network Against Food Crises.

The humanitarian agency, set up in 2016 by the Europe-an Union and United Nations, also warned that acute food insecurity has continued to worsen since 2017, the first year of its annual report into food crises.

“We must do everything we can to end this vicious cycle. There is no place for famine and starvation in the 21st cen-tury,” said U.N. Secretary Gen-eral Antonio Guterres.

He added that conflict and hunger need to be tackled jointly, as they reinforce one another.

US climate envoy John Kerry said Tuesday island nations faced a sit-

uation "beyond existential" due to cli-mate change, as he called for an end to fossil fuel subsidies and coal plant financing.

The 20 countries responsible for most of the world's emissions had a "special responsibility" to take action, Kerry said -- but warned they were not "moving in the same direction" or fast enough.

"When I talk to some of the island state leaders they are not just consid-ering adaptation and resilience, they are considering where they are going to move to," Kerry told a virtual seminar

during the Manila-based Asian Devel-opment Bank's annual meeting.

"It's beyond existential."Kerry, the former secretary of state

who has become President Joe Biden's globe-trotting climate envoy, said "ade-quate finance" was critical for achieving the goal of checking warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahren-heit) above pre-industrial times -- the aspiration set in the Paris Agreement to avoid the most severe effects of climate change.

But he said nations were moving too slowly.

"We all know what we have to get done here. I hate to say it but we are sort of inching along, we are not actually getting it done," he warned.

"Emissions are going up, we are on the wrong track -- people are building back from Covid as if there were no reason to be thinking differently."

Kerry's remarks came less than two weeks after Biden doubled US ambitions for cutting greenhouse gas emissions, putting the country back at the fore-front on climate.

Asian Development Bank president Masatsugu Asakawa told the seminar the Asia Pacific region -- which includes China, the world's biggest polluter -- was responsible for about 50 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

As the market for coal, oil and gas re-bounds this year, he warned more than 80 percent of the expected growth in coal demand would be from Asia.

"Without decarbonising energy systems the goals of the Paris Agreement will be beyond reach," he said.

Kerry called on banks to stop financing coal projects and for a framework to be put in place for "phasing out oth-er fossil fuel investments" and support countries transition to "net-zero" emissions.

He also said fossil fuel subsidies should be abolished around the world -- including in the United States.

"You must create incentives for the right behaviour, not the wrong behaviour," he said.

Greta Thunberg said on Tuesday after meeting Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Lofven.

“We climate activists have had, I don’t know how many meetings with the people in power and it is, basically, the same discussion every time - there is a complete denial,” Thunberg told reporters after the meeting.

“The sense of crisis is absolutely zero.”Thunberg, who shot to fame in 2018 when her lone protest

outside the Swedish parliament in Stockholm over the lack of action to stop climate change became a global movement, also criticised the media for downplaying the seriousness of the crisis.

“If no one puts pressure on those in power, obviously they are not going to do anything,” she said.

Global governments appeared to have given up on the goal of limiting global warming to an increase of 1.5 degrees compared to pre-industrial levels, she said.

“We are not going to accept that.”Sweden’s government has claimed a leading role in the fight

against climate change, but Thunberg and her fellow activists said the government was not doing enough.

“As it looks now ... those who don’t take the climate crisis seriously and don’t treat it as a crisis, unfortunately, are a part of the problem,” she said.

But there was reason to hope.“Think if these people did do some-

thing, think if they could shoulder the responsibility, they could be such a big part of the solu-tion, and we said that to him (Lofven),” Thunberg said.

In a comment on the meeting on Instagram Lofven said that Sweden was a driving force in the European Union’s effort on climate change, while its industry was transi-tioning to a fossil-free future and helping other countries reduce emis-sions.

“Sweden has the oppor-tunity to be the world’s first fossil-free, welfare-state, but we need to raise the pace of change,” Lofven said. “We need new steps.”

Doctors had been concerned about Cisse’s health, according to local press reports, as well as her babies’ chances of survival.

Mali’s health ministry said in a statement that ultrasound exam-inations conducted in both Mali and Morocco had suggested that Cisse was carrying seven babies.

Australia’s most populous state reported its first locally ac-

quired coronavirus infection in more than a month on Wednesday, with health authorities working to track down the source and the variant involved.

The first local infection in south-eastern New South Wales since March 31 strengthens prospects for a resumption of social distancing curbs, many of which had been eased as cases dwindled.

Although Australia has largely eradicated COVID-19, a man in his 50s with no known links to hotels used to quarantine people who have arrived from overseas tested positive on Tuesday, the state’s health ministry said in a statement.

The unidentified man visited several spots in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, the state capital and Australia’s biggest city, the ministry said.

Testing showed a higher viral load than typically seen in in-fected people, potentially increasing the chance that the man has spread the disease, the ministry said. He is considered to have been infectious since April 30.

“That gives us some cause for concern,” the state’s chief health officer, Kerry Chant, told reporters in Sydney, adding that all those who had been in close contact with the man had been told to self-isolate and get tested.

India released $6.7 billion in cheap financing for vaccine makers, hospitals and oth-

er health firms yesterday as US President Joe Biden said 70 % of American adults should have had at least one coronavirus shot by July 4.

Reserve Bank of India governor Shaktikanta Das also vowed to de-ploy “unconventional” measures if the crisis worsens.

“The devastating speed with which the virus affects different regions of the country has to be matched by swift and wide-rang-ing actions,” Das said.

The new measures -- making it easier for banks to give cheap loans to hospitals, oxygen manu-facturers and even patients -- aim to improve access to emergency health care, he said.

The central bank will also give some general business borrow-ers more time to repay loans to help underpin the economy, Das added.

“The immediate objective is to preserve human life and restore livelihoods through all means possible,” he added.

Around 40 nations across the world had said that they would send medical supplies and assis-tance to help India deal with the pandemic.

The first consignments of med-ical supplies from foreign nations arrived in India on April 25 from Singapore. Since then, reports say, tonnes of foreign aid in the form of oxygen generators, concentra-tors and ventilators were received by the Ministry of External Af-fairs officials in the past week.

US climate envoy John Kerry said Tuesday island nations faced a sit-

uation "beyond existential" due to cli-mate change, as he called for an end to fossil fuel subsidies and coal plant financing.

The 20 countries responsible for most of the world's emissions had a "special responsibility" to take action, Kerry said -- but warned they were not "moving in the same direction" or fast enough.

"When I talk to some of the island state leaders they are not just consid-ering adaptation and resilience, they are considering where they are going to move to," Kerry told a virtual seminar

during the Manila-based Asian Devel-opment Bank's annual meeting.

"It's beyond existential."Kerry, the former secretary of state

who has become President Joe Biden's globe-trotting climate envoy, said "ade-quate finance" was critical for achieving the goal of checking warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahren-heit) above pre-industrial times -- the aspiration set in the Paris Agreement to avoid the most severe effects of climate change.

But he said nations were moving too slowly.

"We all know what we have to get done here. I hate to say it but we are sort of inching along, we are not actually getting it done," he warned.

"Emissions are going up, we are on the wrong track -- people are building back from Covid as if there were no reason to be thinking differently."

Kerry's remarks came less than two weeks after Biden doubled US ambitions for cutting greenhouse gas emissions, putting the country back at the fore-front on climate.

Asian Development Bank president Masatsugu Asakawa told the seminar the Asia Pacific region -- which includes China, the world's biggest polluter -- was responsible for about 50 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

As the market for coal, oil and gas re-bounds this year, he warned more than 80 percent of the expected growth in coal demand would be from Asia.

"Without decarbonising energy systems the goals of the Paris Agreement will be beyond reach," he said.

Kerry called on banks to stop financing coal projects and for a framework to be put in place for "phasing out oth-er fossil fuel investments" and support countries transition to "net-zero" emissions.

He also said fossil fuel subsidies should be abolished around the world -- including in the United States.

"You must create incentives for the right behaviour, not the wrong behaviour," he said.

Greta Thunberg said on Tuesday after meeting Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Lofven.

“We climate activists have had, I don’t know how many meetings with the people in power and it is, basically, the same discussion every time - there is a complete denial,” Thunberg told reporters after the meeting.

“The sense of crisis is absolutely zero.”Thunberg, who shot to fame in 2018 when her lone protest

outside the Swedish parliament in Stockholm over the lack of action to stop climate change became a global movement, also criticised the media for downplaying the seriousness of the crisis.

“If no one puts pressure on those in power, obviously they are not going to do anything,” she said.

Global governments appeared to have given up on the goal of limiting global warming to an increase of 1.5 degrees compared to pre-industrial levels, she said.

“We are not going to accept that.”Sweden’s government has claimed a leading role in the fight

against climate change, but Thunberg and her fellow activists said the government was not doing enough.

“As it looks now ... those who don’t take the climate crisis seriously and don’t treat it as a crisis, unfortunately, are a part of the problem,” she said.

But there was reason to hope.“Think if these people did do some-

thing, think if they could shoulder the responsibility, they could be such a big part of the solu-tion, and we said that to him (Lofven),” Thunberg said.

In a comment on the meeting on Instagram Lofven said that Sweden was a driving force in the European Union’s effort on climate change, while its industry was transi-tioning to a fossil-free future and helping other countries reduce emis-sions.

“Sweden has the oppor-tunity to be the world’s first fossil-free, welfare-state, but we need to raise the pace of change,” Lofven said. “We need new steps.”

Tuesday and all nine babies are “doing well”, her government said, although Moroccan author-ities had yet to confirm what would be an extremely rare case.

They are due to return home in several weeks’ time, she added.

Doctors had been concerned about Cisse’s health, according to local press reports, as well as her babies’ chances of survival.

Mali’s health ministry said in a statement that ultrasound exam-inations conducted in both Mali and Morocco had suggested that Cisse was carrying seven babies.

Australia’s most populous state reported its first locally ac-

quired coronavirus infection in more than a month on Wednesday, with health authorities working to track down the source and the variant involved.

The first local infection in south-eastern New South Wales since March 31 strengthens prospects for a resumption of social distancing curbs, many of which had been eased as cases dwindled.

Although Australia has largely eradicated COVID-19, a man in his 50s with no known links to hotels used to quarantine people who have arrived from overseas tested positive on Tuesday, the state’s health ministry said in a statement.

The unidentified man visited several spots in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, the state capital and Australia’s biggest city, the ministry said.

Testing showed a higher viral load than typically seen in in-fected people, potentially increasing the chance that the man has spread the disease, the ministry said. He is considered to have been infectious since April 30.

“That gives us some cause for concern,” the state’s chief health officer, Kerry Chant, told reporters in Sydney, adding that all those who had been in close contact with the man had been told to self-isolate and get tested.

India released $6.7 billion in cheap financing for vaccine makers, hospitals and oth-

er health firms yesterday as US President Joe Biden said 70 % of American adults should have had at least one coronavirus shot by July 4.

Reserve Bank of India governor Shaktikanta Das also vowed to de-ploy “unconventional” measures if the crisis worsens.

“The devastating speed with which the virus affects different regions of the country has to be matched by swift and wide-rang-ing actions,” Das said.

The new measures -- making it easier for banks to give cheap loans to hospitals, oxygen manu-facturers and even patients -- aim to improve access to emergency health care, he said.

The central bank will also give some general business borrow-ers more time to repay loans to help underpin the economy, Das added.

“The immediate objective is to preserve human life and restore livelihoods through all means possible,” he added.

Around 40 nations across the world had said that they would send medical supplies and assis-tance to help India deal with the pandemic.

The first consignments of med-ical supplies from foreign nations arrived in India on April 25 from Singapore. Since then, reports say, tonnes of foreign aid in the form of oxygen generators, concentra-tors and ventilators were received by the Ministry of External Af-fairs officials in the past week.

A senior Kurdish official has said there are growing in-

dications that Islamic State is trying to make a comeback af-ter an uptick in attacks in Iraq.

At least 19 members of Ira-qi and Iraqi Kurdish security forces have been killed in re-cent days across the country, according to military state-ments and security officials, prompting calls from Iraq’s president to remain vigilant to the threat of a resurgent Islamic State.

The attacks come after Bagh-dad’s deadliest suicide bomb-ing in three years, claimed in January by the ultra hardline Sunni Islamist group, and amid

fears that a reduction of US-led forces could upset stability.

Groups of men are prepar-ing for long hours of hard labor deep underground

in a trouble-plagued coal mine in Bosnia’s central city of Zenica.During Islam’s holy month of

Ramadan, observant Muslims among them are easy to spot. Arriving for their shift and as-sembling for a roll call before riding an elevator into the mine tunnels, they carry with them transparent plastic bags contain-ing simple meals brought from home with which they will break their daily fast 500 meters (1,640 feet) below the surface.During Ramadan, observant

Muslims abstain from eating, drinking and smoking from dawn until sunset and Zenica coal miners are no exception. For the entire duration of the Muslim holy month, they go about their normal work routine, insisting they feel no exceptional hunger, thirst or exhaustion.“For someone who does not

want to observe the fast, it is al-ways easy to find an excuse. We work hard, it is hot here, but we want to observe the fast and Al-lah gives us strength to endure,” said Salih Doglod, a miner.Inside mine shafts, one can’t

see sunset, but miners consult their watches and smartphones for the right time to sit down, unwrap their food and break their daily fast together.After a quick meal, one of the

miners issues a call to prayer and

the men break into groups of two or three before returning to their difficult and dangerous job.Bosnia’s coal mines, including

the one in Zenica, have been badly maintained, and have seen almost no investment and mod-ernization as the region was en-gulfed in an ethnic conflict in the 1990s.In 2014, Fuad Hadzic survived

a deadly collapse in the Zeni-ca mine and insists it had only strengthened his faith. At the time, several mine tunnels col-lapsed leaving him and 33 oth-er miners, including five killed

by the rubble, trapped under-ground for hours.“May it never repeat or happen

to anyone else, but the people of faith among us trusted that God would save us, and we were saved by God,” Hadzic said.“We were saying all the prayers

we knew out loud and telling one another to just keep praying because we knew only God can save us,” he recalled.Hadzic insists that God protect-

ed him in the most dangerous hours of his life and has always been giving him strength to ob-serve his religion.“I am working in this same

mine for 30 years and with God’s help I always fast during Rama-dan. I do not find it difficult at all,” he said.

Injury-free Fajardo ready to rumble in PBATDT | Manila

Six-time Most Valuable Play-er (MVP) June Mar Fajardo

is on the road to full recovery and ready to lead San Miguel Beer’s campaign in the Philip-pine Basketball Association’s 46th season next month.

The 6-foot-10 gentle giant is making great strides in his leg injury that sidelined him for more than a year.

Without Fajardo, the Beer-men were eliminated in the quarterfinals despite holding a twice-to-beat advantage against Meralco.

But now Fajardo is expected to fully regain his strength this month.

So should the league open in June, the Cebuano franchise player would definitely be avail-able to man the paint for the Beermen, who are looking to regain the Philippine Cup title.

San Miguel Beer head coach Leo Austria confirmed this positive development, saying: “Yes, he will definitely play this season. His expected timeline for playing was actually within May.”

Ironically, the extended lock-down had worked to Fajardo’s advantage since he was able to let his broken leg regain its strength.

“Even before the lockdown, he has been showing great im-provement and has also been doing some workouts and court drills,” Austria said.

The veteran bench taskmas-

ter said he could not wait to see his star player back on the hardcourt.

“Since there are no games yet, it looks like the delay gave him an advantage. He’s really doing his best on his individual work-outs now,” Austria said.

“He is very eager to get back on the court. That’s why he was a bit frustrated when the lock-down was implemented.”

The road to recovery, howev-er, was not easy.

After suffering a tibia frac-ture in practice in February last year, Fajardo sat out the entire 2020 season that was held un-der a bubble setup in Clark. He was also forced to undergo a couple of surgeries and reha-bilitation programs while the National Capital Region was under enhanced community quarantine.

His recovery suffered a blow

when doctors required him to undergo another surgical pro-cedure to clean the infection in his tibia last December.

Still, Fajardo remained opti-mistic and used the delay in the PBA opening to rehabilitate and strengthen his leg for the tough grind ahead.

He will be joining a San Miguel team that made tre-mendous improvement in the off-season.

The frontcourt rotation that features Moala Tautaa and Ar-wind Santos remains intact as well as the backcourt core of Chris Ross, Marcio Lassiter, Alex Cabagnot and Terrence Romeo.

The addition of CJ Perez, however, turned the Beermen into a super team, putting the scoring cudgels off the shoul-ders of Fajardo.

Armed with vast experience as player and coach, Souza de Brito will help the Philippine women’s team prepare for the upcoming Southeast Asian Games to be held in Hanoi, Vi-etnam from Nov. 21 to Dec. 2 this year.

He was a member of the 1992 Brazilian men’s volleyball team that captured an Olympic gold.

Souza de Brito would become an Olympic champ again, this time as Brazil’s women’s vol-leyball coach in Beijing in 2008.

He was also a champion coach at the club level, winning titles in his home nation as well as in Turkey and Japan.

“With coach Jorge’s vast ex-perience as a coach and player, we are very sure that we will get the technology transfer we have aspired for,” said Philip-pine National Volleyball Feder-ation (PNVF) president Ramon “Tats” Suzara.

Souza de Brito is confident of bringing his winning pedigree to the Philippines

“I could be the fatherly-type,

but I want to push myself and the team, work hard to achieve goals,” said Souza de Brito, who was assigned by the Interna-tional Volleyball Federation (FIVB) to help work on the na-tional women’s team program.

“I’m very happy to have this chance to come to the Philip-pines, it’s an honor. I love vol-leyball and I love the passion Filipinos have for volleyball. They love the sport so much—

and there are a lot of fans.“It was amazing, I can feel my

body shaking, it’s a very spe-cial moment for all athletes. It was the best emotion in my life. I want to repeat that feeling again — in the Philippines, in the SEA Games.”

The first day of Souza de Bri-to’s his two-year contract will be on July 1.

“Coach Jorge has to have time to transition from his fam-ily and from his job as coach of Brazilian club Clube Duque de Caxias,” Suzara said.

Souza de Brito will also work with assistant coaches Tai Bun-dit and Grace Antigua.

“I will do my best to help Philippine volleyball and I ex-pect to see good players getting involved in the project,” he said. “We will try to get the best from what we can do and make a new page in history.”

Al Najma were crowned c h a m p i o n s o f t h e

2020/2021 Bahrain Basketball Association (BBA) Cup.

They clinched the title af-ter defeating Manama 66-48 in the single-game final, played late Tuesday night at Zain Basketball Arena in Um Al Hassam.

Najma led 20-18 at the end of the first period, which they stretched to a 31-24 advantage heading into the half. They then enjoyed a 13-point gap, 50-37, after three quarters,

before cruising in the final canto.

CJ Giles and Fadalallah Abbas top scored for the victors with 20 points apiece, while Qasim Hassan added 11.

Sadeq Shukrallah led Ma-nama in the loss with 18, while Ahmed Najaf added 14.

BBA president Waleed Al Ala-wi was on hand to present both teams their respective medals and trophies in an awarding ceremony that followed the game.

Bahrain gearing up for Arab Futsal Cup

• Bahrain drawn in Group A with hosts Egypt, Kuwait and Mauritania

• National team currently preparing locally for competition, which takes place in Egypt May 20 to 30

Bahrain have been drawn in Group A for the upcoming

fifth Arab Futsal Cup 2021.The competition is scheduled

to be held in Egypt from May 20 to 30.

The nationals are in the same division as the hosts, Kuwait and Mauritania for the open-ing stage. Group B consists of Morocco, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Comoros.

The Bahrainis kick off their campaign on opening night against their Kuwaiti counter-parts. Egypt and Mauritania face off in the group’s other game that night.

All four teams are back on the playing court on May 22, when Bahrain play Mauritania and Egypt go against Kuwait.

The final Group A games are

then scheduled for May 24. The Bahrainis play their Egyp-tian counterparts that evening, while Mauritania take on Ku-wait.

The top two teams from each group at the end of this opening phase move on to the semi-fi-nals, which are scheduled for May 27.

The final will then be held on May 29.

Bahrain’s national futsal team are currently training locally for the competition.

The draw for the cup was held late Monday night at the Union of Arab Football Associ-ations headquarters in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The Arab Futsal Cup was last held in 2008, also in Egypt, when Libya were crowned back-to-back champions, after having also won in 2007.

Egypt won the tournament’s first two editions, held in 1998 and 2005. They also were the runners-up the two previous times.

Mohammed-Khonji pair face Ahmed-Hassan duo in Super Doubles final

Abdullatif Mohammed and Nasser Khonji are set to

take on Abdulla Mohammed Ahmed and Salman Hassan tonight in the final of the Su-per Doubles of the BTC Rama-dan Tennis Tournament 2021, organised by Bahrain Tennis Club (BTC).

The match is scheduled for a 9.30pm start, and it will be played at BTC’s newly inau-

gurated centre court, which features a state-of-the-art grandstand.

The Mohammed-Khonji pair advanced to the title de-cider after a semi-final win over the pairing of Khalid Yaqoom and Salah Al Najjar, while the Ahmed-Hassan tandem overcame the team of Ali Khonji and Ahmed Janahi.

Following tonight’s final match, the awarding and clos-ing ceremony will be held.

Bahrain’s senior men’s national foot-ball team will make a five-day trip to Ukraine later this month where they

will play an international friendly match against their European hosts on May 23.

This was confirmed yesterday by a team official, who said that the Bahraini squad will be in Kiev from May 20 to 24.

During this period, they will face their Ukranian counterparts at the Metalist Oblast Sports Complex stadium in the city of Kharkiv.

The game will be part of both teams’ preparations for their upcoming interna-tional matches, which, for the Bahrainis, include their remaining joint-qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup 2022 and AFC Asian Cup 2023.

The Ukraine friendly is their first of two in the last week of May. They also face off with Malaysia at home on May 28.

Bahrain, coached by Portuguese tactician Helio Sousa, are expected to begin a local

training camp on May 15 before flying to Europe.

Sousa has yet to name the squad that he will call up for this crucial period, as Bah-rain’s three remaining joint-qualifiers are scheduled to be held in June.

They will be played in the Kingdom after the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) named Bahrain as the centralised venue for Group C, which also includes Iraq, Iran, Cambodia and Hong Kong.

Bahrain are set to go against Cambodia on June 3, Iran on June 7 and then Hong Kong on June 15.

Bahrain are currently second in their division with nine points, having won two matches and drawn thrice. Iraq are the

leaders with 11 points after winning three games and drawing two other times.

Iran are third with six points but have played just three matches so far and have two wins and two losses. Hong Kong and Cambodia completed the Group C table with five points and one point, respectively.

There are eight groups in all in this round of qualifiers, with five nations in each group. The other centralised venues selected by the AFC are China for Group A, Kuwait for Group B, Saudi Arabia for Group D, Qatar for Group E, Japan for Group F, the UAE for Group G and South Korea for Group H.

At the end of this stage of qualification, the eight group winners and the four best runners-up advance to the third round of World Cup qualifying, and also secure their berths in the Asian Cup. The next best 24 teams will compete in a separate competition for the remaining 12 slots in the Asian Cup.
