Introduction:The concept behind the use of indium-
tin-oxide (ITO) coated microscope
slides is surprisingly simple: Take amicroscope slide, be it made of glass,
or quartz, or even plastic, coat it withITO, apply a suitable conductor strip
at the ends, connect electrical leads (to
put a voltage potential across the slide) and the slide will be uniformly heated, higher
even than the boiling point of water (if desired). High transparency (from UV to NIR)ITO coatings have applications not only for microscopy but any time planar, electrically
conductive surfaces are required that have the just indicated transparency. Our coatings
are also used by researchers in the areas of liquid crystal display technology, polymerlight emitting diode technology and related applications. Our ITO coatings in general,
provide good transparency, good conductivity with reduced charging of the substratesurface.
Anti Reflective Coatings:The ITO coating itself is reflective, the antithesis of being "anti-reflective". SPI Suppliesis now able to offer our ITO coated substrates with high quality anti-reflective as well as
index matching coatings.
Increased transmittance:For those doing microscopy with ITO coated slides, there are times when no matter how
much transmittance there is, just a bit more is needed. Up until now there was nothing
anyone could do about that. But using the latest technology in the thin film coatingsindustry, SPI can now offer two additional coatings for slides.
1. Index matching coating (IMC) involves the application of a thin quartz layer on top ofthe already applied ITO layer. The miracle of the IMC quartz layer is that the
transmittance is boosted up considerably.

2. Antireflective (AR) coating which is a quartz coating on the side of the substrate
opposite to the side with the ITO coating.
Do all users need an index matching coating or an AR coating, remembering that we are
talking about coatings to increase transmittance? The answer is probably not everyone
but for many of our customers, since transmittance is one of those things in life that wesay "never enough", the possibility of getting these additional coatings is highly attractive
for their work.
No SiO2 passivation layers present under the ITO coating!While certain products used in research are seen by the typical user as being "generic",
that all brands are "the same", let us assure you that this is not the case for ITO coatings.
The SPI Supplies Brand of ITO coated substrates are most certainly not like any other.While we surely do want to protect our proprietary technology and know how, we do
want to cite one important difference: The SPI Supplies ITO coatings are not applied over
an SiO2passivation layer and the absence of such a passivation layer can have important
advantages to many users.
How can we get away with no passivation layer?Because of the uniqueness of our process, one absolutely need not worry about the
leaching of alkali oxides into liquid crystal systems, and therefore there is no need for a
passivation layer. Our ability to avoid this costly step results in a lower cost production
process and at the same time, results in an incremental increase in transmittance. SPISupplies can of course, provide ITO coatings over an SiO2 layer, but it will also add to
the final price and would be treated as a special order.
Refractive index of the ITO coatings:For those who need it, we can provide estimates of the refractive index of the ITO
coatings products by SPI Supplies.
Cleaning your ITO-coated slides:Each SPI Supplies Brand ITO coated slide arrives individually wrapped in a special
protective paper selected to keep the slide clean and damage free during shipment andstorage. However, there could be times when the user would feel more comfortable
giving the slide a cleaning treatment prior to use, and the recommended cleaning solvent
is isopropyl alcohol. This solvent should not injure the ITO coating but with prolongedcontact, it could start to dissolve a bus-bar if present. Under no circumstances should you
try cleaning with alkali solutions. Dilute sodium hydroxide solutions are commonly used
for patterning ITO.
We would also recommend a high quality lint-free cotton wiper such as our own SPI-
Wipes Lint-Free Cotton Wipers. In any case, whatever you do, do not use any acid forcleaning, even a weakly acid agent, because it will definitely damage the ITO coating
irreparably.

If you are a "new-bie" to this field, we have attempted to "walk you through" the product
selection process. We realize that out of our desire to create off-the-shelf products thatcan be manufactured in quantity, thereby lowering both production and selling prices for
both ourselves and our customers, we do not want to create the appearance that we are
closed to the idea of making something "custom". We are happy to quote andmanufacture such custom products for our customers. However, for research applications,
where the numbers tend to be smaller, keep in mind that the tooling and other set up costs
to make the first one can be considerable, and these are costs over which we have littlecontrol.
Custom ITO coating of customer supplied substrates:We are very happy to receive customer supplied substrates for ITO coating. Included inour pricing quotes for such a service is the proper cleaning and preparation of the
substrates prior to coating. This includes a special proprietary solvent cleaning followed
by a plasma cleaning to promote adhesion of the coating to the substrate. Let us know
your requirements being sure to tell us the outside dimensions of the items to be coatedand also the resistivity wanted, remembering that using one of our standard resistivities
will result in the lowest cost to you. This also means that we can apply over the ITOcoating an index matching layer designed to increase the transmittance. And additionally,
we can apply a proprietary antireflective (AR) coating on the opposite face to increase the
transmittance even further.
Use of busbars:When the ITO coated substrate is to be connected electrically, some facility must be
made for the electrical contacts. In former days, early workers used a piece of copper tapethat was carefully wrapped around the edge of the substrate but in later years, we
developed an efficient process of screen printing onto the substrates a silver paint (e.g.
ink) that once cured, exhibits a resistivity of better than 0.2 ohms per square. All SPIsupplied busbars are silver lines applied this way with this resistivity.
What we can not do.......Our unique coating facility is set up to coat only ITO and quartz and nothing else. We arenot able to coat indium oxide or tin oxide, only ITO and quartz. The quartz that we coat is
hard, durable and with a refractive index of ~ 1.47.
Cutting down larger coated pieces to smaller sizes:Some of our customers are at times tempted to purchase a large piece of ITO-coated
glass, with the idea of scribing and then breaking down the glass to smaller sizes. Lifeshould only be that simple! Unfortunately, when this is done, there is sufficient disruption
to the ITO coating at the edges that it is never a good result. We always advise cutting the
glass down to the desired size and then coat the cut pieces. This does result in additionalhandling, and higher costs but one is assured of a much higher quality result.

A Note on Terminology:The electrical properties of the ITO coating are given as surface resistivity, measured in
ohms per square. In some disciplines, people refer to this as sheet resistance. For reasons
perhaps of laziness, or other reasons, most people just call this number "resistivity". Butwe should also point out that this is definitely not what is called "bulk resistivity. To
determine the actual resistance of a slide, it is necessary to do a short calculation. For
example, if the resistivity is 30 to 60 ohms per square, then the resistance of the coating
on a slide 1 x 3 inches (25 x 75 mm), measured along the length, is 90 to 180 ohms. Thisis determined by dividing the length of the slide by the width of the slide, in our example
dividing 3 by 1, or 75 by 25, and multiplying that result (3 in our example) by theresistivity. No matter what units you use to measure the dimensions, the resistance of the
coating is the same.
Caution:Electrical resistance heating can expose you to potentially lethal voltages. We
recommend that you use only low voltage power supplies for this application.

special protective paper selected to keep the cover slip clean and damage free duringshipment and storage. However, there could be times when the user would feel more
comfortable giving the cover slip a cleaning treatment prior to use, and the recommended
cleaning solvent is isopropyl alcohol. This solvent should not injure the ITO coating butwith prolonged contact, it could start to dissolve a bus-bar if present. Make sure the
solvent used is spectroscopic purity because any organic residues will detract from the
performance of the cover slip. The best way to be sure the cover slip is free of all organiccontamination is to perform a plasma cleaning in the SPI Supplies Plasma Prep II plasma
etcher. We would also recommend the use of a high quality lint-free cotton wiper such as
our own SPI-Wipes Lint-Free Cotton Wipers.

of course make any other resistivity, but the set up charges will be much higher.Therefore when specifying a custom coating resistivity, try to stick to one of the standard
resistivities but if you can't, and some customers can not, then we can produce whatever
resistivity that might be needed. However you will have to be prepared for the added costassociated with the non-standard resistivity.
Busbar vs. No Busbar:Most traditional applications involved the passage of an electrical current through the
ITO coating and that meant that one way or another, electrical leads would have to be
applied to the cover slip at two opposite ends. On the other hand, some emerging
applications do not require such electrical contacts. Yet others prefer to apply their ownbusbars. That is why we offer the product both with as well as without the burbars.

Choose from a variety of resistivities for a range of applications for heating
Useful additional information first:Is it easy to tell which side of the slidehas the coating? This is one of the
most often-asked questions of those
who are first-time purchasers of the
coated slides.
There are actually two ways, but theeasiest to tell if the side has been
coated is to hold it up to the light. There should be a purple tint which can be seen right to
the very edge of the glass. If you can only see it part way to the edge, the ITO coating isthe other side.
Of course, the "acid test" is to attach a multimeter to one of the sides. There will be noreading if there is no coating. And of course, there will be a reading if it is the side with
the coating.
For the selection of the "right" ITO-coated microscope slide product, the selectionprocess includes the following steps:

Selection of the substrate material
Select from the following choices in substrate materials:
Float glass (soda lime)These are what are generally called "normal microscope slides" and are available
either as a) polished or b) unpolished. The main reason one would worry about
polishing, if if they needed to have the ultimate in surface flatness, since thatparameter is improved greatly as a result of the polishing. We can report the
following specifications for flatness:

slides that have been offered by SPI Supplies for a number of years and which are
used routinely by researchers all over the world.
The question of flatness often times arises and the SPI quartz slides are made to a
typical flatness of 2-4 "bands" per in., but quartz in 1 mm thickness can bend
under its own weight. When placing an optical flat on top to measure flatness, theslide or cover slip will conform to the flat, but when on top of an optical flat, it
does not weigh enough to flatten itself out. We are told that slides and cover slips
can not be made with greater flatness than 2-4 "bands" per in.
PlasticWe are still developing this part of the product line.
Polymer filmWe can offer polyester (PET) film in 200x200mm x 0.2 mm in thickness. These
ITO-coated films have the major advantage of being able to be bent to extremely
small radii of curvature (less than 10 mm) without even the slightest hint of
deterioration of the ITO-coating. This is made possible, at least in part, because ofthe superior SPI Supplies technology in terms of adhesion of the ITO coating to
the PET substrate. This form of our ITO coating technology is of value to anyone
in need of flexible, transparent electrodes. These ITO-coated PET substrates canbe cut down to their needed size with a GEM razor blade or good scissors.

Coated Microscope SlidesSelection of the busbar if one is desired
Introduction:With or without busbar is the question. We will try to answer that question in the
following several paragraphs.
In order to gain the benefit of the ITO coating, one does need the ability to make
electrical connections from the coating to the power source. This can be done by the
experimenter or the slides can be purchased with the busbar already applied and ready touse.
There are a number of different qualities of the busbar that one could apply. As astandard product, we offer the slides with a silver line silk screened on at the edge (or
elsewhere is desired) that exhibits, when cured and dried, exhibits a surface resistivity of
better than 0.2 ohms / square. The busbar is typically three micrometers in thickness with
a three millimeter width.

Introduction:These slides are ITO coated quartz for those working in the UV or near infrared range of
illumination, where normal float glass slides cannot be used (because they are not
transparent in these wavelength ranges of illumination). For work that does not require anITO coating, select the SPI Supplies
Brand of fused quartz microscope slides and cover
slips. And for those requiring the lowest possible levels of trace elements, consider using
our fused silica slide products.
Busbars:The quartz slides are also available with busbars, a silver silk screened line at the edges

Index Matching Coating with Busbar -
Unpolished
Substrate (unpolished) glass plus ITO coating + quartz top coating
Introduction:The main reason index matching coatings are important is that such coatings increase thelight transmission through the coated substrate. The index matching coatings contain a
layer of SiO2 (quartz) as a top coating and the end result of that is the the total
transmittance is increased noticeable amounts.
How does this kind of coating work?An ITO only coating has associated with it, a particular transmittance. An ITO coating
only is quite reflective and when the quartz coating is applied, it adds antireflectionproperties which means that what is no longer reflected, will be transmitted, and that is
the mechanism by which a quartz coating increases the transmittance.

What does this mean in terms of microscopy?Simply put, the index matching coating increases transmittance through the slide, which
for some experiments, can be very very importance.
Busbars:
These index matched slides are offered only with busbars.
Custom coatings:We offer standard off-the-shelf slides with index matching coatings but we can alsomanufacture custom index matching coatings.We can take your substrates (or supply
them for you), coating them with the specified resistivity followed by the quartz coating
of 80 nm. Note that the 80 nm can be varied to meet customer requirements. Let us know
your requirements so that we can get back to you with pricing and delivery time.
Available products:Presently we can supply the index matching coating in the form of off-the-shelf
microscope slides (1" x 3" in size) or on your custom substrates which could be glass,quartz, or even certain plastics such as polyester, acrylic, and polycarbonate. If you
require something special, let us know your requirements.

PlatesUse our standard size glass plates to be cut up to your own desired custom sizes
Introduction:SPI Supplies has long offered a product line of ITO coated glass and plastic microscope
slides in different ITO coating thicknesses (e.g. resistivities).
Some customers have needs for varying sizes of ITO coated glass and consequently we
offer large coated glass plates in a standard stock size.
Coating thickness:One should select the coating thickness on the basis of the desired coating resistivity. Onecan select the appropriate coating from our conversion chart that relates coating thickness
to resistivity.
Cutting down larger coated pieces to smaller sizes:Some of our customers are at times tempted to purchase a large piece of ITO-coated
glass, with the idea of scribing and then breaking down the glass to smaller sizes. Life
should only be that simple! Unfortunately, when this is done, there is sufficient disruptionto the ITO coating at the edges that it is never a good result. We always advise cutting the
glass down to the desired size and then coat the cut pieces. This does result in additional
handling, and higher costs but one is assured of a much higher quality result.

Introduction:SPI Supplies now offers an ITO (indium-tin-oxide) custom coating service for customersin industry, government and academia, in both research as well as production quantities.
We are experienced with applications for displays, computer touch screens, and electrical
control panels manufactured from substrates of glass or plastic (polycarbonate, polyester,or acrylic). All are available with or without busbar connections. We can coat substrates
supplied by SPI Supplies or by our customers who have special shapes to be coated.

subjected to a precleaning with proprietary solvents and then a plasma cleaning in order
