WORLDNUCLEARPOWERSTATUS

Today, theworldproducesas muchelectricityfromnuclearenergyas it didfromallsourcescombinedin 1960.Civilnuclearpowercan nowboastover10,000reactoryearsof experienceand supplies16% of gtobalneeds.Manycountriesalso builtresearchreactorsto providea sourceof neutronbeamsforscientificresearchandtheproductionofmedicalandindustrialisotopes.

Today,56countriesoperatecivilresearchreactors,and 31 have 440 commerciatnuclear powerreactorswitha total installedcapacityat 3,54,000MWe(seetable).This is overthreetimesthetotalgeneratingcapacityof Franceor Germanytramallsources.A further32 powerreactorsare underconstruction,equivalentto7.5%ofexistingcapacity,while32 more,on orderor planned,areequivalentto9.8%.

Fifteencountriesdependon nuclearpowerfor atleast a quarterof their electricity.FranceandLithuaniagetaroundthreequartersat theirpowerfrom nuclear energy, while Betgium,Bulgaria,Hungary,Japan,Siovakia,SouthKorea,Sweden,Switzerland,Stovenia and Ukraine get 35%ormore.

In additionto commercialnuclearpowerplants, there are more than 280 research reactorsoperating in 56 countries, with more underconstruction. These have many uses includingscientificresearchand the productionof medicalandindustrialisotopes, aswellasfortraining.
