Millennia ago, the only recourse our ancestors had to appeasing nature

was worshipping the elements they believed comprised our world. Today,

as we awaken to the importance of sustaining our world, we know it is in

our hands to preserve the balance that sustains us. As entrepreneurs, as

employees, as cogs in the wheel, and as wheels that turn the fate of our

planet. The CII-ITC Sustainability Awards recognise and reward the

most significant contributions to sustainable development in the country,

to encourage the leaders of this revolution.

Page 3: India’s Most Sustainable - CII-ITC Centre of Excellence ... · The CII-ITC Centre endeavoured to bring it centre-stage and inspire a ... the bar for India's Most Sustainable SUSTAINABILITY

We stand today at a crossroad in time with a rare opportunity to make a crucial and enlightened choice for our future generations. A choice to bequeath them a prosperous, peaceful and secure tomorrow or a curse to leave the planet in peril, barren of resources and steeped in conflict.

I believe businesses can and must make a meaningful difference to co-create a shared future that fosters sustainable development with social equity. Indeed, business enterprises are uniquely placed given their transformational capability to engender positive change. Driven by an inspiring vision to create larger societal value, powered by their entrepreneurial vitality, genius and creativity, corporates can create a new paradigm of economic value that simultaneously enhances the natural environment and enables the generation of sustainable livelihoods.

To unleash the transformative capacity of business and help create the enterprises of tomorrow, the CII-ITC Centre was established in 2006 as a pioneering institution in this field. Sustainability as a business philosophy was still in the fringes at that time. The CII-ITC Centre endeavoured to bring it centre-stage and inspire a redefinition of the larger value that businesses can create. Over the years, the Centre has grown from strength to strength and has been a trailblazer in thought leadership, creating awareness, building capacity and in recognising sustainability champions amongst business and industry.

The Sustainability Awards of the CII-ITC Centre embody our belief that exemplary enterprises must be recognised and awarded not only for their pioneering efforts but also to create beacons of inspiration for many more to follow. So far, the CII-ITC Sustainability Awards have recognised more than 100 winners that have risen to this challenge. This year, around 50 companies offered themselves for close scrutiny through a rigorous process of evaluation. I would like to applaud each one of them for their outstanding achievements and commitment to shaping a future that is more sustainable and inclusive.

It is with great pleasure that we present to you the winners of the CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2013. My very best wishes to them for an even more successful journey ahead. I would also like to place on record our grateful thanks to the Members of the Jury, led by Shri Suresh Prabhu, who have spent several hours of their valuable time to select the best amongst the best. As always, the Secretariat of the CII-ITC Centre deserves to be commended for their painstaking efforts year-on-year to build India's most coveted Sustainability Awards.

Sincerely,

YC DeveshwarChairman, Advisory Council,CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development

All applicants undergo a rigorous evaluation process that is based on a business excellence model and tailored for business in India. Desk

assessment includes meticulous analysis of documented evidence of sustainability initiatives submitted by applicants. Qualifying

companies then go through an on-site assessment, over a period of six months, by a peer team of highly experienced CII-certified

assessors who spend approximately 1000 hours per application. And finally, the last shortlist of winning applicants is validated by a

preeminent jury comprising leaders from government, industry, civil society and academia.
