He recorded 483 wins over 28 seasons and this included 13 Sectional Cham-pionships and 2 Duneland Conference Championships. He was honored three times as District Coach of the Year. He also served on numerous IHSBCA committees, had 5 play-ers on the North Squad All-Stars, and was also inducted in 2010 to the Valparaiso High School Hall of Fame. Pat and wife of 45 years, Nancy, live in Valparaiso. They have two sons. Michael is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps, currently stationed at Corpus Christi Naval Station in Cor-pus Christi, Texas. He and his wife JoAnne have two daughters. Tim has a P.H.D. in Cultural Anthropology, and is a professor of Urban Studies at Worcester State Univer-sity, in Worcester, Massachusetts.

LaTROY HAWKINS - Player

LaTroy Hawkins is a 1991 Graduate of West Side HS in Gary, Indiana where he was a 2-sport athlete in baseball & basketball. He was drafted in the 7th round of the 1991 June amateur draft by the Minnesota Twins. He was a 2-time minor league player of the year in the Twins organiza-tion in 1993 & 1994 and then made his major-league debut on April 29th, 1995 at the age of 22.

He played in the big leagues for parts of 21 season as a member of the Minnesota Twins; Chicago Cubs; San Fran-cisco Giants; Baltimore Orioles; Colorado Rockies; New York Yankees; Houston Astros; Milwaukee Brewers; LA Angels; New York Mets; a 2nd stint with the Colorado Rockies; and the Toronto Blue Jays. He made the playoffs 6 times in his career reaching the World Series in 2007 with the NL Champion Colorado Rockies.

LaTroy ranks 10th on MLB’s all-time list in Games Ap-peared with 1,042 over his 21-year career. He is 1 of only 13 relievers in baseball history to record a save against all 30 teams and appear in 60 plus games in 10 different seasons. On September 11, 2004, he recorded an immaculate inning striking out the side on 9 pitches.

LaTroy joined the Minnesota Twins front office in Novem-ber 2016 as a Special Assistant to Baseball Operations. His responsibilities include: contributing to the development of the organizational pitching philosophy used in the selection and development of all players. He will occasionally serve as an analyst for Twins games on Fox Sports North.

COLIN LISTER - Contributor

Colin Lister grew up in Australia and moved to Fort Wayne in 1958 due to his involvement with the Fort Wayne Komets professional hockey team. He eventually became owner of the team and served in that role until 1985. He never played the game of baseball, but became enamored with it when he was asked to umpire a game one day and from that point on he was “all in” with the sport.

COLIN LISTER - Contributor (cont.)

Once arriving in the United States, he spent 45 years of his life involved with amateur baseball. That included Connie Mack teams in Fort Wayne known as the Komets and the DOX. These teams also played in the older Stan Musial League and included former pro players like Brent Gaff, Andy Replogle, Dave Doster, and Matt Kinzer. Colin’s legacy in baseball is one of an ambassador for the sport and a mentor. His teams won 85% of their games, but he was more concerned about touching the lives of the people under his tutelage and giving of his own resources to see that their needs were met. This is hard to describe in a short bio, but if you have met the man you completely understand the impact he had on the game and the people around him.

His honors include being named to the Indiana High School Hockey Hall of Fame, the Fort Wayne Sports Hall of Fame, having No. 59 retired on his behalf by the Komets hockey team, and having the local Connie Mack League renamed the Colin Lister League.

HOWARD KELLMAN - Contributor

2018 will mark Howard Kellman’s 43rd season as Voice of the Indians. He has watched more than a million pitches and seen more than 300,000 outs recorded during Indi-ans broadcasts. On June 30, 2017, Kellman broadcasted his 6,000th game with the Tribe. Kellman joined the Tribe in 1974 and has been the club’s lead play-byplay an-nouncer each year during that time frame except for the 1975 and 1980 seasons. Honored as Indiana’s Sports-caster of the Year in 2002, Kellman has called IHSAA football and basketball games on WHMB-TV 40 since 1990. In 2009, he was inducted to the Indiana Sports Writers & Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame. Most recently, Kellman was inducted into the Indiana Broad-cast Pioneers Hall of Fame in 2015. Since joining the Indi-ans, Kellman has also been named to the radio broadcast team for three Triple-A All-Star Games, including the 1989 Midsummer Classic in Columbus, Ohio, the 2001 contest at Victory Field and most recently, the 2013 show-case in Reno, Nev. In addition, he led the broadcast team for ESPN’s coverage of the Triple-A World Series from 2006-08. Along with covering the Tribe, Kellman has worked behind the microphone for the Chicago White Sox (1984) and Cleveland Cavaliers (1988- 90), called both IHSAA football and basketball games, and served as a sideline reporter for Yale football on the YES Television Network (2012). He also filled in as a replacement on New York Mets broadcasts in 2014. Kellman currently manages his own professional speaking service which features life lessons drawn from sports-related stories, and published his book 61 Humorous & Inspiring Lessons I Learned From Baseball in 2010. A graduate of Brooklyn College, Kellman began his early broadcasting days as an an-nouncer for St. John’s University basketball. Howard and his wife, Robin, reside in Carmel, Ind.

Games Wanted

This has traditionally been a popular spot on our website. With that said, we would encourage coaches to again utilize this feature on our website now that it has been redesigned. We will also have a white board available in the main hallway of the clinic for coaches to post open dates and games wanted. Coaches, please post your games needed and contact information so other coaches can get in touch with you.

Passwords will no longer be issued at

the state clinic. Instead, passwords

will be available on the IHSBCA web-

site. Passwords are necessary to sub-

mit team and game information.

IHSBCA Line-Up Cards

Line-up cards will again be available at the clinic in the lobby area near the registration table. Cost is $10 per pack of 40 line-up cards. You save $5.00 postage per packet if they are purchased at the clinic.

INSURANCE BOOKMARK

Each member coach can print off insurance in-formation from our website when they join the coaches association for 2017-2018. It outlines all the coverage you receive with your annual IHSBCA dues. This coverage is also good if you

give baseball lessons.

JUNIOR SHOWCASE

PROCEDURE

Every year we get inquiries about getting

players for the July Junior Showcase. This is

an attempt to make the process understand-

able to all coaches. The procedure for getting

invitees will be as follows;

1. In March, we will contact every college

program in Indiana and all scouts who cover

the state, asking for the names of players and

their school they would like to see invited to

the showcase.

2. In April, we will send a letter of invitation

to those players who are mentioned most

often, to attend the showcase. The players

must respond by May the 1st if they are going

to attend and send in an information form

along with a $50.00 check.

3. If we have not reached our goal of 75 par-

ticipants by May the 10th, we will then move

to our alternates list and invite players by the

following positions; pitchers, catchers, mid-

dle infielders, outfielders, and corner infield-

ers.

The alternates list will be created by offering

coaches who attend the STATE CLINIC the

opportunity to submit one player’s name for

the alternates list.

The Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame in Jasper, Indiana is undergoing the third expansion since its inception. Hall of Fame

Director Ray Howard has raised $180,000 through private funds to help facilitate this endeavor, but we are still in need

of raising $50,000 to ensure the project can break ground and have the necessary space for the future. The Indiana High

School Baseball Coaches Association has been assisting with the fundraising arm and wants to elicit the support of all

high school baseball programs in Indiana.

This newsletter includes a list of all the current Hall of Famers housed in the Jasper facility. The IBHOF ( http://

www.indbaseballhalloffame.org ) also contains state championship team memorabilia; North – South photos and

MVP’s; the high school baseball player of the year awards; and other items of relevance to all levels of baseball in Indi-

ana. It would be safe to say that almost every high school in Indiana has a connection to some part of the hall of fame.

Our desire is to ask each high school baseball program to consider a small donation to the IBHOF. Based on the number

of schools that play the sport each spring, a $50 donation from each high school would translate into approximately

$20,000 to donate to the IBHOF and a $100 donation from each high school would translate into approximately $40,000

to donate to the IBHOF. There have been a few schools contribute already and we want to say ‘Thank You!’ For all

others, we have a couple of options for contributions.

The state clinic registration form has a line item where you can donate at the same time as coaches register for the clinic.

A second option is the online link to the GoFundMe account https://www.gofundme.com/in-baseball-hof-expansion. A

third option is to send the donation directly to Ray Howard at the IBHOF (checks payable to IBHOF; 1436 Leopold

Street; Jasper, IN 47546.

We are encouraging every school to give their best gift. Whether it is from the athletic department; baseball team; base-

ball booster club; or athletic booster club, we appreciate your support with this fundraising opportunity. If you have

questions about this project; would like further information; or want to provide a major gift you may contact IHSBCA

Executive Director Brian Abbott (260-358-7310) or Ray Howard (812-630-2412).

Thanks for your time and consideration in this matter,

Brian Abbott
