Page 2: INDIAN NATIONS DISTRICT LEADER'S GUIDE OVERVIEW

Introduction Every year, Scouts from the Indian Nations District gather together at Freeze-O-Ree to compete, meet other Scouts within the district, and most importantly, show their Scout Spirit. This year we have a Zombie Survival Area at Old Fort Parker just North of Groesbeck, Texas. Bring your own gear and rations to survive the weekend. The only thing for certain in a Zombie Apocalypse is that nothing is for certain. Remember that the best chance for survival is to “Be

Prepared!” As always, the Freeze-O-Ree will include competitive games that relate to scouting skills and the theme for scouts to enjoy. Be sure to develop a patrol yell – every event gives you points for performing your patrol yell. Stay tuned to Emergency Broadcast Notices for further updates.

Registration Registration will cost $15 per Scout and $5 per Adult or Staff member. Use and submit the form on page 9 for registration by Monday 21 January 2019; walk-in registrations (previously unregistered units showing up at Freeze-O-Ree) will be charged $25 per person. Patches will be complementary to all registered participants. ONLINE REGISTRATION IS AVAILABLE at: https://scoutingevent.com/662-IN4_camporee

Campgrounds This year's Freeze-O-Ree will be held at Old Fort Parker – 866 Park Road 35, Groesbeck, TX 76642. Troop campsites will be assigned upon arrival Friday night. You will have a limited amount of space for your campsite & cooking, please plan accordingly. Typical campsite size for a troop will 32'x40'. Trailers may need to be parked some distance from the campsite. Campsite Don't forget to keep your campsite clean! Staff will make rounds inspecting campsites, most likely when no zombies are in sight. The inspection guidelines are in this packet. Clothing/Uniforms All Scouts are expected to arrive at Flag Ceremonies in Field Uniform (Class A). Scouts should wear activity uniforms (Class B) any other time. Costuming is encouraged but does not replace the uniform at flags. Remember that no weapons, real, simulated, or otherwise will be permitted. Since this will be a friendly competition, leave your weapons at home. Parking Parking space is very limited. Please carpool and arrive early! Campfire (Zombie Theater) The campfire will be performed mostly by the Troops with staff supervision. Every Troop is encouraged to have a skit at the campfire and EVERY skit must contain something about Zombies! It’s time to get creative with a new skit or by reworking some of those old skits that we see every Camporee. Costumes and involving audience participation are encouraged. Skits/songs must be appropriate for a Cub Scout audience.

They will be scored separately from the troops. They will compete as a den. Ribbons may be awarded based on availability. Staff For the entire weekend to run smoothly, many experienced Scouts are needed to staff the Freeze-O-Ree. Each Troop is highly encouraged to provide at least 2 staff members. Staff members are encouraged to be members of the Order of the Arrow (minimum Ordeal Member, newly elected candidates are not yet OA members) or adults. Arrowmen who want to staff are highly encouraged to attend the monthly OA meetings to help plan for the event. Please check the Teha-Lahna Facebook page for more information on OA meetings. ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE EVENTS A zombie attack is probably the hardest challenge you will ever face. Zombies (or the “undead”

as they prefer to be known) are notoriously difficult to kill because they are not actually alive. Humans turn into zombies from a Zombie virus, which travels "through the bloodstream, from the initial point of entry to the brain." The virus ceases all bodily functions and mutates the brain into an organ that does not need oxygen. Thus, the essentially deceased person will become the living dead, with an insatiable drive to consume human flesh. A person can only become infected through "direct fluidic contact," including bites and direct contact with zombie wounds and remains with open wounds on humans.

It’s up to you to save humanity from the Zombies. Each Patrol will need to bring one compass,

per patrol and know how to use it; ask your Scoutmaster for instructions (unless he is already a Zombie). Having your daypack with the necessary survival gear always available will be critical. All patrol members should carry a water bottle to prevent dehydration. Dehydration slows you down and slowpokes are more likely to be eaten by Zombies.

Event Stations

Fortification (AM ONLY!)

Build the best gate possible with the materials provided to keep the zombies out and stay alive! The key here is using the correct lashing techniques.

Infected Leader

Each unit had leaders and SPL’s at the Camporee HQ when it was overrun. Each patrol will need to capture one of their infected, but stunned, leaders or SPL and bring him to the new HQ to be administered the cure. Directions on how to safely capture, secure and transport a Zombie will be provided. The new HQ location will be in a coded message so the Zombies can’t find our new HQ.

Pyromania

Fire is very good at limiting the spread of the Zombie virus, but steps need to be taken to ensure that the fire does not spread, nor that it attracts too much attention to the new HQ. With all your matches ruined by drooling Zombies, you have a few basic supplies to get a flame going fast. Use the items provided at the station along with materials found in your daypack (except paper) to invoke a flame. The string is holding a bucket containing the cure over your infected leader. Burn through the string in record time and douse your leader with the cure. You don’t want to get too close and get contaminated. A quick review of burn first-aid will also help you score additional points.

Finding the Cure

An ASM has stashed essential survival gear at various locations for his future use. Unfortunately, our ASM has fallen victim to the Zombie Apocalypse. Luckily, he left coordinates for how to find his precious loot. You will need to use your compass to locate our fallen ASM’s gear, but look out, he may still be out there lurking in zombie form.

Page 7: INDIAN NATIONS DISTRICT LEADER'S GUIDE OVERVIEW

Monster Mash

You and your Patrol find yourselves in the midst of a full-fledged Zombie outbreak. Zombies have been seen swarming the area, attacking, and leaving numerous injured. Your Patrol comes across an “Army Mash” unit, being overwhelmed and in chaos. A medic will call upon your patrol to use their first aid training from Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class requirements to help treat a patient. Once the patient has been treated, your patrol will need to make a portable stretcher and move the patient to the Extraction Point.

Defend the Camp (AM ONLY!)

Listen up, Scout! There's only one thing standing between a Zombie horde and your brains, weapons know-how. That is why you want to train with available weapons! Test your accuracy with Archery to make sure you can defend yourself. We’ve located a stash of Zombie Heads that we need you to take out.

Be Prepared

What is needed to survive a Zombie Apocalypse? Winners will be based on which patrol gets the survival items in the correct order. It will take about 15 minutes per patrol to determine the priority of the list.

Escape Through the Barbed Wire

There are Zombies all around and you need to get from one area to the other without touching the Zombie Barrier. Work your way through holes in a barb wire web without touching the wire, one hole for each team member (or you sound the alarm and the Zombies know where you are). Hurry up. You only have so much time before the Zombies find you anyways. How many of your patrol members can escape to safety before time runs out?

Signal for Rescue

The Zombie Apocalypse has started and the world is in chaos. Your patrol needs to get to some place safe and NOW. Luckily, there are helicopters flying all around you but they don’t see your patrol. Be able to use a signal mirror to attract attention. Make visual signs so that a helicopter knows where it can land to pick you up and that you need rescued. Do you know the internationally understood distress signals or will they mistake you for Zombies and fly off?

Move the Zombie Head

This will be a variation on the Isotope challenge - teams will need to move a zombie head without touching it or it touching the ground. Teams will have to navigate around obstacles with the head and place it in a containment vessel. This will be a timed event.

Page 8: INDIAN NATIONS DISTRICT LEADER'S GUIDE OVERVIEW

Costume Challenge (Bonus Points – Afternoon only) Turn one of your adult leaders into a terrifying Zombie. Some say that all adult scout leaders look like Zombies after a day or so in the woods with Scouts! See if you can’t help them to look a little more Zombie-like. Costume and make-up are by the youth, the leader is just the model! Undead Head Tournament (Bonus Points): The game of Dodgeball has become infected. Don’t worry about a ball touching you; you have to keep the Zombie head from biting you. See who makes it and who doesn't.

Awards

Zombie Cook Off (Optional) Each unit has the option of producing a main dish, dessert, or appetizer based on the Zombie theme. These will be judged by the camporee staff at supper on Saturday. Please be aware that poisoning of the staff will not be looked upon favorably and is grounds for disqualification. Honor Patrols The three patrols with the highest total score for the day will earn an additional ribbon. Zombie Apocalypse Survival Team Champions Who will lead and save humans in the event of a Zombie invasion? The Silver Axe Award will go to the troop that earns the highest patrol average during the day’s events. Campsite Inspections The troop with the best overall campsite will receive the Bronze Hatchet Award. Dear Competitors,

Although Freeze-O-Ree is supposed to be a competitive event, the true goals of this yearly gathering are

to promote the Spirit of Scouting, develop a sense of camaraderie between troops, and to give scouts a

platform to demonstrate their skills and knowledge.

We hope you will all have a positive experience with the Freeze-O-Ree this year and will utilize this

opportunity in the best way possible. We have spent time preparing and planning fun and competitive

activities for you to enjoy, so we hope to see you at the 2019 Freeze-O-Ree on January 25 - 27, prepared

to have a blast!

Yours in Scouting,

The Freeze-O-Ree Staff – Indian Nations District & Teha-Lahna Chapter of Order of the Arrow
