Much of South Asia has tropical climates with ample rainfall and a variety of vegetation; however, the climates vary widely in the north and west where mountain ranges block rainfall.

Tropical wet (Rainforests) grow along the west coast, Ganges Delta, the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

Rainforests need lots of rain.

In Sri Lanka and around the Bay of Bengal, rainforests grow ebony trees, vines and orchids.



Deciduous trees surround the rainforests in the Western Ghats.

In Bangladesh tropical forests of bamboo, mango, and palm trees grow.

The Sundarbans is a swampy area with the world’s largest mangrove forest.

Tropical dry (Savanna) have wet and dry seasons.



The Himalaya block cold north winds.

So, south of the Himalayas have a hot humid tropical environment.

The mountains have snow all year round.

Some areas remain frozen all year round.

In the Northwest has a desert climate.
