CRITICAL THINKING: Doing ordinary things in an extraordinary way to ensure an extraordinary future

On May 19, 2012, IIS Chantilly was charged with energy as Critical Thinking students took center stage for the Presentation and Competition of Model Cars. This year's project was to build a Model Car using materials such as, cardboard box, CD's, mousetrap wheels, balsa wood, wires, springs etc. NO kits, motors or Lego cars were allowed.

There were many trials and errors when “building” the cars, but the end result was a vast array of innovative masterpieces. Engines were cranked up, cars revved up as everyone enjoyed watching the cars in motion.  Later, each student came up to the stage and explained how they made their car and what was the force / principle to get it moving.

Judges on the panel awarded ribbons for : Creativity, Most effort shown, Car that traveled the farthest. Judges for the competition Mrs. Tarla Patel and Mrs. Radha Mohan. Special thanks to Mr. Dhananjay Kumarji for his support and opening remarks.

***Fusion Dance: Anjana Ghosh

Introduction to Bollywood-Fusion: Anjana GhoshBollywood, takes its name from Hollywood, Bolly for Bombay. Bollywood, is the Indian film industry, known to have held the record for the maximum movie productions annually. Well going back to the name, now with Bombay changing to ‘Mumbai’, folks connected to the Indian Film Industry were just too happy that the politicians and other whimsical people could not wrestle their way into changing ‘Bollywood’ to probably ‘Mollywood’, just because!!

IIS- Fusion JuniorThat said, kids of Indian parents all over the world have connected themselves most via the Indian movies. Indian movies as we all know are akin to New York’s Broadway musicals, and the dance style is known as ‘Bollywood’. Bollywood dance is influenced by dances of the world. It incorporates classical, folk, lyrical, jazz, ballet and other dance forms.

It depends on who the choreographer is and in which dance form have they received their formal training. In this case, the dance teacher ‘Anjana Ghosh’, has trained mainly in Bharatanatyam, Kathakali and

Mohini Attam, three classical dance forms from south India.

She has been teaching for more than 15 years, initially classical forms and now Bollywood-Fusion. Her choreography typically contains intense aerobic and high-energy moves with a touch of martial arts for posture and rhythm, to keep the dancers extremely energized. The intention is always to have the participants prepare a group routine of a specific duration based on a lyrical Bollywood number that they could probably perform on stage.

The performance today by children below 10 yrs, is choreographed on a Bollywood number, “Maahiyaa” from the movie “Awaarapan”.
