Dedicated, Naturally. Green Energy, Climate Neutral, Water Feeding economic growth with residual rice husks The Project The vast majority of the India‘s energy needs are met by emission-intensive fossil fuels, mainly coal and oil. In many places, electricity supply however is so unstable that it limits industrial output, thus slowing down economic development. With energy demand expected to double by 2025, this constitutes an immense political, economic and environment challenge for the world’s second most populous country. The proposed project activity is the installation of a biomass based power plant at Siltara in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. The purpose of the project activity is to generate electricity using renewable bio- mass residues i.e. rice husk. As biomass is a carbon neutral fuel, the power generation will have zero GHG emissions. The project activity involves installation of new boiler units and the refurbishment of existing turbine units. The capacity of the turbo generator is 20 MW. It is anticipated that the plant can operate at a plant load factor of 80%, resulting in a total annual power generation of about 126 GWh. Based on the per capita consumption of electricity in India, the power production of the plant is sufficient to supply 165.000 people with clean electricity. Location: Chhattisgarh, India Project type: Renewable energy – biomass Project standard: Gold Standard Project start date: November 2010 Total emission reductions: > > 107,000t CO 2 e p.a. < < Sustainable Development By supporting this project you’ll contribute to the following SDGs: Affordable and clean energy: The project helps to stabilize energy supply and facilitates access to electricity. Decent work and economic growth: The project would lead to generation of direct and indirect employment and improving economic condition of the area. The project activity adds income to the farmers by providing added economic value to their produce by pro- curing rice husk from the rice mills. Industry, innovation and infrastructure: The successful implementation of the project will encourage further activities to promote renewable energy production. Life on land: The project activity utilizes biomass residues, which would otherwise be left unutilized to decay or be burnt. By displacing electricity from fossil-fuel based generation it also helps to prevent the emission of various air pollutants. Key Facts While focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, all our projects also generate mul- tiple co-benefits. These are supportive of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
