ARYANSA group of people that lived in Eastern Europe and migrated to India over 3,000 years ago. The Aryans brought the Sanskrit language and the practice of the caste system.

BUDDHISMA religion that about 300 million people around the world practice. Gautama Buddha founded the religion 2,500 years ago.

CAMEL RACINGCamels run at full speed with a rider on it’s back. Races take place in Rajasthan, India.

DHAMEKH STUPAGautama Buddha gave his first sermon about his beliefs there.

ELEPHANTSIndian elephants have smaller ears than African elephants. An elephant is smart enough to recognize itself in a mirror. They have a parade of painted elephants in India. People in India have love, respect, and great devotion for the elephant.

FASTINGKeeping a fast is a large part of the Indian culture and tradition. Fasting involves willingly abstaining from eating certain or any kind of food, drink or both.

GREAT GRANARY The ruins of the mysterious building known as the Granary. The purpose of this building is still unknown.

HENNAHenna paste is used in a traditional form of tattooing called Mehndi. It is an art form which began in ancient India (now Pakistan and India). Patterns of Mehndi are often applied to brides before wedding ceremonies.

INDUS RIVERIndus River Valley Civilization started about 2500 B.C.E. along the south-western part of the Indus River. The largest city was Mohenjo-Daro, in present day Pakistan, and settlements stretched all along the river.

JASMINEA fast growing flowering shrub with clusters of pink, yellow, or white blossoms. The flower is used in many festivals and celebrations.

KARMAIn Hinduism and Buddhism it is believed that how you live your present life will decide what your future life will be like.

LOTUSIn the Hindu religion, the lotus flower represents long life, honor, and purity.

MOHENJO-DARO’S GREAT BATH!!!!!!!!!Is one of the best-known structures among the ruins of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization at Mohenjo-Daro in Pakistan. Most scholars agree that this tank would have been used for special religious functions to purify and renew the wellbeing of the bathers.

NAMASTENamaste is used as a respectful form of greeting for hello and goodbye. It is typically spoken and simultaneously performed with a palms touching gesture.

OUTCASTES(or Untouchables) A person who has been expelled from their caste. Also any member of the lowest caste that often has a job that no one wants (involving cleaning waste or preparing meat). Many untouchables are discriminated against and are poor.

PUNJABThe Golden Temple Amritsar India (located in Punjab State) is not only a central religious place of the Sikhs, but also a symbol of human brotherhood and equality.

QUAILThe Himalayan quail or mountain quail is a medium-sized quail belonging to the pheasant family. It was last reported in 1876 and is feared extinct.

REINCARNATIONReincarnation is the religious or philosophical idea that after death, the soul or spirit can begin a new life in a new body. This is an important belief of the religions of India.

TAJ MAHAL The Taj Mahal is a white marble mausoleum located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

UPPER CLASSThe upper class included the Brahmin, the priests and scholars, as well as the Kshatriya, the rulers and warriors.

VAISAYASVaisayas are the third of the four Hindu castes, comprising the merchants and farmers.

X-TRA CUTE RED PANDAThey’re SOOO CUTEEEE!!!!! Also called lesser panda and red cat-bear, is a small mammal native to the eastern Himalayas and south-western China. The red panda is slightly larger than a domestic cat. It has reddish-brown fur, a long, shaggy tail, and a waddling gait due to its shorter front legs. It feeds mainly on bamboo, but and also eats eggs, birds, insects, and small mammals.

YANAYana is a village located in forests of the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, India. Yana is famous for two massive rock formations known as the Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and the Mohini Shikhara ("Shikhara" means "hill").

ZAMINDARZamindars were landholders responsible for collecting taxes for the monarchy during the British colonial era. They are credited with the cultural, architectural, and educational development of Calcutta and discredited for the exploitation of rural Bengal.
