NOTES ON THE CONTRIBUTORS

F R A N C I S A Z Z O P A R D I holds a Licentiate in Church History from the Gregorian University and a Diploma in Archivistics from the Vatican School. He is a Franciscan Capuchin friar and was ordained priest in 1952. Ex-Minister Pro­vincial of his Order, he is also Archivist and Historian of the Malta Province. He is a regular lecturer in Church History and Christian Archaeology at I N S E R M and a visiting lecturer in Church History at the Faculty of Theology He is also Research Assistant and Cataloguer of the Archives of St. John. His publications include several scholarly studies of historical interest.

J O H N A Z Z O P A R D I studied at the Malta Archiepiscopal Seminary and the Royal University of Malta and he holds the Licenciate of Divinity. He was ordained priest in 1962. In 1967 he was appointed curator of the Cathedral Museum at Mdina and he actively collaborated in the reorganization of its magnificent collection. In conjunction with St. John's University, Collegville Min­nesota, U . S . A . , he is responsible for the organization and filming of the ecclesiast­ical archives at the Museum and has extended the project to include other collections at the Curias of Malta and Gozo, the religious orders and the parishes. He is also responsible for the running of a conservation laboratory. J O S E P H B E Z Z I N A holds a Doctorate in Church History from the Gregorian University and Diplomas in Archivistics and Librarianship from the Vatican School. Fie was ordained priest in 1975. He is a regular lecturer in Church History, Patrology and Methodology at the Gozo Episcopal Seminary and a visiting lecturer at the Faculty of Theology of Malta and at I N S E R M . His other duties include that of Diocesan Archivist of Gozo. He is the author of books and scholarly studies mainly of historical interest.

M A R I O B U H A G 1 A R holds a B.A. (Hons) and M, Phil, from the University of London and is currently researching for a Ph.D. from the same University. He has specialised in Art History and the Paleochristian Antiquities of the Maltese Islands. Between 1967 — 1971 he was attached to the National Museum Department to work on the compilation of the Protective Inventory of Monu­ments and Sites which was being drawn up by the Malta Government with the co-operation of the Council for Cultural Co-operation of the Council of

Europe. His publications include specialised studies on Maltese catacombs and rock-tombs, cave-dwellings. Medieval church architecture, panel paintings and folk art. He is the editor of Proceedings of H i s t o r y W e e k .

A L O Y S 1 U S D E G U A R A studied at the Malta Archiepiscopal Seminary and at the Royal University of Malta. He was ordained priest in 1952. Between 1955 — 1960 he was successively parish-priest of the villages of Kirkop and Gharghur. In 1960 he was nominated first archpriest of Siggiewi a post he resigned in December 1975 after having served for ten years as Secretary of the Malta College of Parish Priests. He was subsequently chosen Archbishop's Delegate for the L a y Apostolate and Director of the Piccolo Clero. In 1981 he was elected Chaplain to His Holiness the Pope and invested with the title of Monsignor. He has carried out extensive research at the Vatican Library and in 1981 he submitted his thesis on the influence of the Reverenda F a b r i c a d i S. P i e t r o on Maltese Social and pastoral life in the period 1626- 1655, to the Malta Faculty of Theology. He is currently researching on Maltese social history during the 17th century.

M I C H A E L E L L U L is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He holds the degree in Architecture and C i v i l Engineering (BE&A; A & C E ) from the Univers­ity of Malta and a post-graduate diploma in Architectural Restoration from the University of Rome. After a time in private practice he joined Government Service in 1955 and is currently Head of the Antiquities Division of the Ministry of Works as well as the official Maltese member on the Committee of the Architectural Heritage of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. He is also a lecturer in Architecture at the University of Malta. His publications include a book on Maltese Architecture and many scholarly papers in local and fo­reign journals.

E D W A R D S A M M U T is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a Knight of Malta. He holds a Doctorate in L a w s ( L L . D ) and an M.A. in History of Art from the Royal University of Malta and has carried out post-graduate studies in Rome and Perugia. His published works include The C o - C a t h e d r a l of S t . John (1950), T h e P a l a c e of t h e G r a n d Masters (1951). T h e M o n u m e n t s of M d i n a (1960), T h e C i t y of Valletta (1968) and Notes for a H i s t o r y of A r t i n M a l t a (1954). Among his numerous shorter publications are the Maltese documents regarding Caravaggio and Melchiore Gafk. He has lectured widely in Malta and Italy.

G O D F R E Y W E T T T N G E R holds a B.A. (Hons), M.A., and Ph.D. from the University of London and has carried out extensive research on Maltese history and interdisciplinary subjects in Maltese and Sicilian archives. He is lecturer

in History at the University of Malta and has presented scholarly papers to a number of International Congresses and Symposia both in Malta and overseas. His specialised field of study is Maltese Medieval History and he has published widely on the subject discussing such topics as lost villages and hamlets, place-names, militia lists, surnames and nicknames, agriculture and industries, and literature and artistic patronage. He is at present finalising the preparation for the publication of U n i v . I I containing the minutes of meetings of the Town Council of Malta and associated documents, 1450—1483, 1498—1499.
