2011 Fall sports season kicks offBy Andrew Alexander

Sports Writer

As the hot summer creeps toward its end and cool autumn evenings approach, McNairy County is blessed to have a mul-titude of high school, junior high, and middle school athletics to participate in and cheer for in 2011.

High school and junior high football bring hopes of promising seasons and dreams of gridiron glory to football fans across the county along with the young men who pour out their blood, sweat and tears each week to improve and honor the name of the school on their jerseys.

Marching bands tune up while cheerleaders practice chants, routines, and dances in prepara-tion to rev up crowds and provide an inspiration to their peers and fans.

Golf teams sweat out the late summer heat competing against schools from all over west Tennessee to prove McNairy

County’s mettle on the links.Lady Bobcats work to dig, set,

and spike their way to victory on the volleyball court.

Strong lady soccer squads for McNairy Central and Adamsville will test their endurance, skill, and intellect in the “beauti-ful game” while the days grow shorter and leaves change from green to bright orange, yellow, and brown.

As always, when the seasons cool down, rivalries begin to heat back up. Each sport, be it golf, soccer, or football will showcase match-ups between cross county rivals.

As heated as the rivalries in the county can be, players on each side respect each other and their sports enough to exemplify the finer points of sportsman-ship, enabling fans and players alike to enjoy and embrace the unique and passionate competi-tive nature of the Bobcats and Cardinals, Rebels, Eagles, Lions, and Blue Devils in the upcoming fall sports season.

AHS Football Roster 2011By Andrew Alexander

Sports Writer

The Adamsville Cardinal football team is coming into the 2011 season after a 6-6 campaign in 2010, in which the Cards made it to the second round of the state playoffs.

The 2011 Cardinal’s return eight starters on offense and nine on defense. According to Cardinal Head Coach Brandon Gray, AHS’s strength does not rest solely on the run game or the pass rush, the team’s strength is its experience and its numbers.

“This year we have 19 seniors and 19 juniors,” said Gray. “The future looks good. Anytime you have numbers like that, you should be successful.”

Key returning seniors include Kasey Hurley and Taylor Alexander at safety, Blake Edwards and Drake Fox on the offensive and defensive lines, Jalen Kendall and Josh Shoate at the cornerback and wide receiver positions, and linebackers Josh Burks, Chase Gunn and John Blakely.

Junior contributors to watch for in 2011 will be Josh Chappell and Daniel Milford on the defensive line, Seth Killingworth at linebacker, and several others on offense.

To fill the shoes of Jamel Sanders, who started at running back for the Cardinals in 2010, Adamsville will platoon junior Hayden Reece and sophomore Zak Neary at running back.

To replace 2010 starting

quarterback Bradley Melton, AHS will rotate junior quarterbacks Dalton Plunk and John Reed Odom, but not because Gray is uncertain about who he wants taking the snaps.

“I think these guys have seen enough playing time, and I feel like they know what winning is all about,” said Gray. When we started this job I don’t think anyone here knew how to win.

“The biggest thing to me for anybody in any sport... you better believe. If you don’t, you’re done.”

The Cardinals play, from top to bottom, a very tough schedule, according to Gray, and it will aid in preparing AHS for the playoffs.

“This year we’ll have to play really well each game... If we can get to the playoffs,” said Gray, “we’ll be ready for whatever we face.”

Adamsville opened the season with a tough loss to 4A Chester County 12-6. As the season progresses the Cardinals will face 4A Bolivar Central and McNairy Central, 5A Hardin County, and 1A Collinwood, who hosted and beat the Cardinals in 2010.

The Cardinals also play stiff competition on the 2A level with games against Riverside High School, who finished last season 10-2, McKenzie High School who made it to the 2A State Semifinals a year ago, and 2010 2A State Runner-Up Trinity Christian Academy.

Going into his 26th season as coach, Jim Glover returns as head coach of the McNairy Central Bobcats along with Michael Stroup, Brandon Alldredge, and Jake Kiser.

A couple of new faces join the team this year from Jackson North Side including Offensive Line Coach Scott Akin and his son, Casey Akin, who has decided to play his senior year at McNairy Central.

“Our senior class as a whole; they are the ones that win ball games. They have goals set in mind that they are looking for-ward to achieve,” said Glover.

Jack Smith has improved at running back, Aiken has worked on offense and defense, Hayden Kiestler has started as quarterback for the third year in a row, and Justin Sutton has sat out due to an injury, but hopes to get back on the field soon.

“A lot of these kids have been playing since they were freshmen and sophomores,” said Glover. “They are looking forward to the season and the challenges.”

DJ Lynum has been playing on the defensive line and is another standout to the coaches. They have tried him in a new position and it seems to be working out well.

“He is a big kid with speed at tight end and we are excited about playing him there,” said Glover.

Competition this year will be fierce. The Bobcats plan to take it one game at a time and hopefully push through and surprise some

of the best.“The county is no doubt

the biggest rivalry,” said Glover. “Brandon has done a good job over there and he has a great group of kids.”

The two top teams in District 14 AA will be Lexington and Liberty according to Glover.

“I liked the way our kids play Liberty last year and how they rose to the challenge. Our goal this year is to beat Liberty. We would love to sneak up on them and beat them,” said Glover.

We are still in the process of learning our system. The main thing I want to do is see improve-ment each week with our kids.

Week to week dealing with teenagers is unpredictable. The range of emotions from injuries to heartbreak is something the coaches have to face.

“The emotions run the gambit every day,” said Glover. “We try to teach them to control their emo-tions and have an even kill so that you can go out there and do your job.”

The most memorable game last year was against Hardin County when the team was caught in a bad storm with several delays because of rain and lightning. McNairy lost the game, but they never gave up according to coach and that’s what he likes to see.

The season record last year was 3 and 7, but the seniors want to set a higher record this year.

“They have set down and made a set of ten goals and ten characteristics to achieve those goals,” said Glover. “We talk about those goals every day and now only they control the outcome of it.”

AJHS Football RosterBy Andrew AlexanderSports Writer

The three-time defending county football champion, Junior Cards of Adamsville, come into the 2011 season targeting a fourth straight county championship while looking to improve on their 6-2 record from last year but know their recent success has left them with a bull’s-eye on their back.

An experienced roster of 28 eighth graders will lead the charge for the Junior Cardinals, and they know that the expectations this season will be high.

Adamsville Junior High School’s head coach Michael Harvill says the team will rely heavily on their ground game to put points on the board and that assistant coach Steven Lambert will lead an aggressive defense that hopes

to keep the competitor’s side of the scoreboard blank.

A talented stable of running backs that includes Bobby Moore, Noah Martin, Dakota Banks, and Trevor Reese is the Cardinals’ strength, but their success will hinge on the productivity of the offensive line, which Harvill says is the team’s only question mark.

“Our running backs are just about as good as any I’ve had,” said Harvill. “If the line comes together, we’ll be just as strong both ways.”

AJHS will have tough games inside the county against Bethel Springs, Ramer and Selmer to repeat last season’s 4-0 run against McNairy County teams but will also face stiff competition from outside the county playing teams like Riverside, Southside Reagan, Beaver, and Hardin County.

Bethel Springs Football RosterBy Andrew Alexander

The Bethel Spring Rebels cannot wait to get on the football field this fall to improve on their 3-4 record, and meet the expectations set for the team by Head Coach Brian Franks.

Bethel’s roster lists only 27 players. Only four of those players started a year ago, but that does not hamper Franks’ enthusiasm about his Rebels.

“Our goal is winning the county championship,” said Franks, and the Rebels plan to reach that plateau utilizing “a lot of speed and a lot of discipline.”

Franks feels the team has excellent speed, and its ground game, combined with players like 8th graders Hunter Ross, Tata Newsome, and Darwin Kelly, who has the ability to be a factor at multiple positions on offense, will give the Rebels an edge over their competition.

To achieve their goal

of bringing the county championship back to Bethel the team will have to play through the growing pains of a young offensive line.

“The line is really young,” said Franks. “They’re still going through a learning process.”

The Rebels will have a tough row to hoe in route to having a successful season in Franks’ eyes.

“They say Ramer is good... Selmer’s always good. They’re big, and they’ll have a big line,” said Franks, “but Adamsville has won the county championship three years in a row. They’re looking to make it four in a row, so they’ll be the tough competition to beat.”

Outside of the county Bethel will play Pickwick Southside, South Side Reagan out of Henderson County, and St Mary’s out of Jackson, Tenn.

“We’re really excited about this year,” said Franks. “We’re looking forward to getting after it.”

2011 Michie Blue Devils Football

Michie Football RosterBy Amanda Lowrance

Sports Writer

Michael Cleary has coached for five years at Michie Elementary and this year Randal Shadburn and Kyle McDaniel will assist.

Cleary led last year’s Blue Devils to a 7-1 season with the first game of the season as their only loss, to Adamsville in overtime 40-38.

“We have a young group of players,” said Cleary. “We had 16 that graduated last year and those guys got the bulk of the playing time because they were athleti-cally and physically more mature. These guys will have to step up and take their spot this year.”

Center Trace Goodwin has put his best foot for-ward and comes off the reserve and onto the field after showing dedication.

“It’s not the most glam-orous position, but the most important position is cen-ter. I have seen some good things out on the practice field. At this point no one is greater than the other. We are working on mistakes, leadership, and putting all

the little things together,” said Cleary.

Over the past few years Adamsville had grown to be Michie’s biggest rival. Adamsville is a team that they measure themselves against.

“I know Bethel will be very athletic and big and historically Adamsville has always had good competi-tion,” said Cleary. “I always have high goals, but if we could go 500 with four and four, I think that will be good. If we go over that great.”

The last game of the season last year was the best memory for the Blue Devils. The team traveled to Mississippi and beat an undefeated team 36-6. But the best memory for the coach was a little different.

“A lot of them started as sixth graders and to see the culmination of their career from beginning to end was the best memory for me and to watch them finish on a high note,” said Cleary.

Managers Luke Bonds and Grayson Chandler will help at practice and on the field by keeping the team organized and hydrated.

Coaching his second year at Ramer Elementary School, Jeremy Blakely hopes to lead the Eagles to a winning season.

“We are going to start with fundamentals in the beginning and work our way up,” said Blakely.

A lot is expected out of Ramer, since last year’s overall season record finished at 6 wins and 2 losses.

“I have no idea how the season will go. We have size, but we have size that has never played before. If we could get together as a team we should do all right,” said Blakely.

The team has more than doubled in size from last year with about 40 players joining the roster versus last year’s 20.

Ramer will be without experience, since only about 5 players return.

“We don’t have many returning players and lots of new players are try-ing new positions,” said Blakely.

Bethel and Selmer has

a lot of players return-ing and Blakely fears the experience will affect his young team’s perfor-mance.

“All of the county teams were rivals. We didn’t play our best game against Adamsville or Michie, but we played pretty well against every-one else.”

After a winning sea-son, one lone, particular memory stands out from last year.

“We won our very last game in over time. We stopped a big 250 pound running back at the end zone to win the game. That was a pretty good memory,” said Blakely.

Bryant James returns this year and will be starting tailback, Tanner Kinkennon is a second year starter on the line, and a lot of great things can be expected out of Kameron Atkins.

Van McMahan will assist Blakely during the Eagle junior high football season and helping out on the sidelines will be managers Alan Burdette, Jimmy Sorrell, and Logan Young.

Larry Williams has begun his third year in coaching and his second year as head coach of Selmer Lions Football.

Williams has gotten to know the community over his course of teaching and coaching at Selmer.

“The one thing that I am learning about McNairy County is that everybody is a rival,” said Williams. “All of the county schools will be competition for us.”

The rivalry is unlike any other, because the children have built friendships throughout the county schools.

“It’s almost like playing your brother, but the bragging rights make the game a little more special,” said Williams. “It’s good to see kids playing with passion.”

The Lions have accomplished a lot in past couple of years like gelling together as a team.

“I think that we are going to have some kids that are going to play well. We have some seventh graders that are going to play big roles as well,” said Williams.

Briley Taylor impressed in the spring preseason practices, but he didn’t play at all last year and Lorenzo Clark played wide receiver last year, but will play

running back this year.Last year’s game of Selmer

versus Ramer, Williams experienced something he said he will never forget.

“It was the best coaching experience for me. The fans were right on top of the field, cheering, and going crazy,” said Williams.

“It was a crazy environment but it was nice to see our kids rise to the occasion in a hostile environment and play well. Even though we lost, I saw them unsatisfied. I see that they really wanted this and that was the first time I seen the fire in my team.”

This year the team and the coach are striving for this type of attitude toward football.

“Everybody is going to bring their A game,” said Williams. “I was able to do this year was simplify it for the kids. We want you to do is play hard, execute, and just have fun. If we can get those kids to play within those principles, everything else will fall into place.”

Williams has words of encouragement that he has tried to instill in his players and the Lions are working hard toward having good season.

“I have always told them to do your assignment with everything you got and you will be successful,” said Williams.
