MARINA LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
Marina Lifestyle Magazineis a monthly publication ofthe Marina City Club. For editorial information, please contact the Executive Office:
Iaccepted the Presidency of the Board anticipating that I would help to create anupscale atmosphere that will both increase property values and make living heremore enjoyable. I want to share my vision with you so I am including a copy of the
email I sent to the members of Management Council, the COA Board, and Seabreezefor consideration.
“As we have discussed, I would like the beautification of the West Pool Area tobe an agenda item. We have been discussing seeking new members to defrayexpenses and I have been noticing that when people go on a tour, the West Poolis a real turn off which doesn't match the standards of the rest of the Marina CityClub i.e.: the front entrance, lobby, fitness center, 3rd floor restaurant, andbanquet room. I know we are in the process of dealing with the cracked decking, but in addition, we should be planning and pricing new vegetation and plantingsso that it resembles the quality of a first class resort, which we claim to be. I amattaching three pictures to demonstrate my point in an effort to enhance thevalue of the Marina City Club.
1. The palms when you first enter the West Pool area.2. The beautiful array of date palms and flowers near the front entrance as an example.3. The pool area at the Ritz Carlton, which is what we could look like.
I am pleased to inform you that the COA and Essex Members of ManagementCouncil voted to have Seabreeze work with our landscaping department to propose aplan to beautify the West Pool. Other projects that are being discussed or are in theworks are cosmetic upgrades to the 2nd floor public bathrooms (including ADA issues)and a modest remodeling of the City Café as well as the 3rd floor bar area.Additionally, we have signed an agreement for the installation of new washer/dryersthroughout the complex with no increase in usage fees.
These projects require no additional assessment but do take into account our five-year plan to finance the possible purchase of a backup air conditioning chiller, elevatorreplacement, and the issue with the window mullions, which is still being evaluated, andother capital improvements.
arrive in the finals without a loss.In the back draw with teams
with one loss, Lamont and Brianhad to once again challengeJerry and Allan to see whichteam would meet Carlos andGavin in the finals. This time, thematch was even tighter with firmvolleys and well-placed servesforcing the issue. In the end,Lamont and Brian prevailed
again in a very tough set, 7-5.The finals were set.
Carlos and Gavin had scopedout the potential opponents andliked the hard-fought nature ofthe set for two reasons: goodtennis and their opponents werea little more tired for it. As thefinal started, the teams werefeeling each other out. Everyoneheld serve until 2-2 when, aftersome long points, Lamont andBrian blinked and Carlos andGavin were there to takeadvantage of a couple errors onserve. Suddenly, the first set wasover 6-2.
Brian and Lamont regroupedand played strong again at thestart of the second set, but onceagain, a couple points swungmomentum to Carlos and Gavin.
With an early break lead at 3-1,they held serve and put thepressure squarely on Brian andLamont. They held and kept itwithin a break until 4-2, when theybroke again. Carlos served for thematch at 5-2 and closed it out withstrong kickers, drawing return errorsand setting Gavin up for put-awaysas the match ended 6-2, 6-2, in ahard-fought battle.
Congrats to the champs,Carlos Dunkerly and Gavin Troster, our 2014 Mcc Men's DoublesChamps. Thanks to all thewonderful and brave participantswho honed their tennis skills to thesharpening steel of pressuretournament play. Thanks to allthose who came out to supportthe players and promote our tennisprogram here at MCC!
T he Marina City Club tennisprogram has shortenedmost of our tournaments
to one-day events in an effort togarner more participation. Themen's doubles championshipswere held on May 17 with adouble-elimination format thatplayed out over one day. Eightteams entered and every teamfeatured determined players.
In the first round, defendingchamp, Carlos Dunkerly, teamedwith Gavin Troster to fight off JimBisch and Arnie Lessing. BrandonBoyce and fiancée DanielleNelson got edged out by RichKahn and Mike Skolnik on court 2.Marv Benson and Jim Richardsmanaged to oust Ron Hirji andTed Giattina. In the mostcompelling first round match-up,Brian Condon and Lamont Cosbyplayed aggressive doubles andoutlasted a tough team in JerryTarlow and Allan Bledstein.
In the next round Carlos andGavin again prevailed as didBrian and Lamont, setting up atough match of the undefeatedteams to go to the finals. Carlosand Gavin played consistent, percentage tennis to win 6-1 and
Congrats to the MCCA1 Ladies Team for winning the Westside League for the second year in a row!
O n Friday, May 30,MCC mixed it upwith our good friends
at the Santa Monica TennisClub as we do once or twiceper year. After playingmen's, women's, and mixeddoubles from 6-8 p.m., wehead up to the MCCRestaurant for food, wine, and dance. This pastinterclub match was noexception. We have a fullslate of matches, with 24players turning out and fillingour six lighted courts withsmiling faces and fun tennis.
We had players of alllevels from both clubs mixingit up in a unique formatwhere we timed thematches, like a basketballgame, rather than playing toa certain number of games. Most of the contests wereclose with Santa Monicaedging out MCC in the Men'sand Women's doublesmatches 4-2.
Then we rotated courtsand mixed up the men andwomen, which againproduced some qualitytennis and goodsportsmanship all around. Inthe mixed doubles round,Santa Monica againprevailed with four wins toMCC's one win and onematch ended in a tie.
After the tennis, 20 of the24 players ventured up to thehallowed MCC Restaurant forroasted chicken, salad, StellaArtois, and other goodieswhile dancing to good musicby Summerwind. Thanks tothe players, Candace, andChef Jesus for making thisanother memorable eveningat MCC!

D on't have apartner? Don'tdespair! Use the
ball machine or find a wallto hit on to improve yourgame. Here at Mcc wehave a ball machine youcan rent for $10 / hour atthe fitness center. It hassimple controls that adjustelevation, speed, spin, interval, and oscillation. The ball machineis on court 4, so first call the fitnesscenter (ext. 224) and reservecourt 4 at an available time, thenrequest the ball machine. Whenyou arrive to play, go to the fitnesscenter, pickup the keysand theremotecontrol. Thenhead over tocourt 4 by theoval pool.
You canuse the ballmachine forseveralpurposes. Themost commonis having theball come toone or twospots on thecourt so youcan grooveyour strokes. What does thismean? Well, tennis requiressome rhythmbefore a player can be fluid in his/ her strokes. By having the ballmachine feed you a steady andeven paced ball, you can get
your stroke into arepeatable pattern whichleads to more consistency, the most important qualitya tennis player canpossess.
Another great use ofthe ball machine is to workon placement from
different positions on a tenniscourt. For example, if you want tocounter your opponents deep,down-the-line approach shots, setthe machine to feed a slice balldeep into your forehand corner, then practice moving from themiddle of the court and slamming
low, forehandscrosscourt. Setthe interval togive you ampletime to recoverto the middleafter each shotso you alsodevelop goodfootwork habits. After you make10 shots in a row, switch toanother patternthat mirrors amatch situationyou encounterfrequently.
Of courseyou may alsohave themachine feedvarious balls andyou count howmany in a row
you can get in, this is the ultimatetest of consistency. When youget over 50 in a row, call me, Iwant to play!
