Cussons Technology founded in 1872 inManchester, England is an organisationwith a proven record of design andmanufacture of equipment used inResearch, Development and Education.Today, the company offers a wide range ofproducts and services to an internationalcustomer base.

The Cussons Technology MarineHydrodynamic Research Systems Divisionwas founded following the acquisition ofKempf and Remmers.

Kempf and Remmers commanded universalrecognition for excellence in the design andmanufacture of a wide range of specialisedforce measurement instrumentation andtest facilities systems for the marinehydrodynamic research sector. Thesefacilities are principally employed in theevaluation of hull designs, propulsionsystems and sea-keeping characteristics of awide range of surface and sub-surfacevessels and other marine structures.

Combining the skills and experience ofCussons Technology in design, manufacture, installation and operation ofprojects with the Kempf and Remmersbusiness, created the world's mostformidable force to serve the MarineHydrodynamic research establishments.

Cussons are able to provide clients with allof the requirements for MarineHydrodynamic Research and Developmentfrom spare parts to facility upgrades; frominstrumentation to complete turnkey facilities.

This Specialised division based within theUK's key hydrodynamic research facility atQinetiQ Haslar, Portsmouth. Our officesare located within Froude’s original Haslartank on the site that is now part of theHaslar Marine Technology Park. At thislocation Cussons have access to the most upto date Marine Hydrodynamic Researchfacility and have access to the researchteams who are continually evolving newtechniques, product ideas and moving thesubject area forward, all of which is ofbenefit to Cussons' clients.

The team at Haslar and Manchester workclosely with former employees of Kempfand Remmers who are employed asconsultants to work with our design andproduct development teams.

Over the years Cussons have establishedclose relationships with many leadinghydrodynamic facilities around the worldallowing us to work closely with SeniorPersonnel to develop our range of productsto suit the needs of specific research for theshipbuilding industry. TOWING TANK &OCEAN BASINCARRIAGESThe wide range of Carriages availablerepresent the best in the world today, havingbeen developed from Kempf & Remmersproven designs. They are suitable for a rangeof hydrodynamic research functions, fromcurrent meter calibrating to large ship modeltesting at speeds of up to 20m/s. TowingCarriages are manufactured from modernhigh-grade materials offering rigidity andstrength, but where necessary manufacturedin suitable lightweight materials for high-speed applications. All carriages are designedsuch as to cope with steady state anddynamic model testing, whilst ensuringsmooth running at constant speeds. Ourrange of Carriages often incorporate fourquadrant systems for smooth accelerationand retardation. Software control maximisestest duration in calm water and with links towavemakers can maximise test duration inwaves. Drive trains, electrical systems, control equipment and other important keycomponents are selected in order to reduceoverall maintenance costs and down timeduring routine maintenance.

PROPELLERDYNAMOMETERSPropeller Dynamometers are based onoriginal Kempf & Remmers designs andhave a reputation for reliability andaccuracy. Using modern rotating andnon-rotating transducer technologyincorporating compensation for bothzero drift and sensitivity to measuretorque and thrust, these instruments arethe workhorses of modern hydrodynamiclaboratories. Many hundreds arecurrently in use worldwide. Our single andcontra-rotating Propeller Dynamometerscan be supplied in a number of differentconfigurations, which include integralmotors and angled drives. They aresuitable therefore for use within modelships (unsealed designs) and on TowingCarriages and pressurised CavitationTunnels (waterproof designs). OurPropeller Dynamometer range isdesigned to permit experiments over awide range of speeds, thrusts, and torques, although non-standard requirements caneasily be accommodated.

MARINE RESEARCHTOWING TANKMODERNISATIONA typical project for Cussons wasconducted at the National TechnicalUniversity of Athens to upgrade their 30year old towing tank control equipment -to improve the accuracy and repeatabilityof hull, propeller and propulsion tests.Based around Cussons Autotest IV, theresultant modernised system combinedCussons extensive experience of drivesystems with a computer system bristlingwith advanced features. Utilising someexisting carriage based equipment thenew control system was integratedseamlessly and efficiently at the clientstest facility. The modernised system wasable to satisfy and exceed therequirements for accurate and stablespeed control, high acceleration, swiftcontrol action, measurement accuracy &repeatability and system safety. Thecombination of improvements inperformance and technology translatedinto greater saving of time and resourceover the previous control system, opening new avenues of research in theMarine Hydrodynamics Laboratory.

AUTOTEST CONTROL& DATA ACQUISITIONCussons Autotest IV is the current versionof a family of computer based control anddata management systems which have beenspecifically designed to meet the complexand demanding requirements typical of awide range of current industrial testapplications. First introduced in 1984,Cussons Autotest has evolved through anumber of versions, adhering to the originaldesign ethos of uncomplicated yet powerfuloperation, culminating in the incrediblypowerful Autotest IV

Autotest IV derives its power and flexibilityfrom established VME computertechnology - for true analogue and digitalreal time performance - and a PC for theoperator interface, data processing andnetworking. Networking Autotest intoestablished LANs allows complete systemintegration - essential for today's ITrequirements.

With Autotest IV's inherently modulardesign it may also be tailored to thespecific applications 1/0 requirementswith the addition of standard 'off-the-shelfcomponents.

Using Windows platform, AutotestDefinition and Test software presents a clearand structured programming interface withbuilt in security, while utilising a RelationalDatabase for data storage and management. Its combination of user friendly interface, powerful adaptability, data acquisition andcontrol ability makes Cussons Autotest IVthe essential tool for Industrial Test andResearch applications

dynamic loaded conditions within ourfactory. This facility is proving to be veryuseful both for the development / testingof new design as well as offering a newdynamic calibration service for ourcustomer’s equipment.

Cussons Technology is accredited withthe demanding ISO 9001, ensuringexcellent quality control throughout thedesign, manufacture, service andcalibration process.

MARINEHYDRODYNAMICSEDUCATIONAL RANGECussons Technology has built on thesuccess of its Kempf & Remmers Range ofResearch Hydrodynamics test equipmentand its knowledge of tertiary educationalengineering equipment to produce a newrange of Educational hydrodynamicequipment to complement smallerfacilities. The Equipment is designed to berobust for student use, and consistent in itsresults and accuracy as many of thecomponents are inherited from the Kempf& Remmers Range. The Purpose is toallow the lecturer demonstrations to becarried out with ease, and for the studentsto undertake a range of experiments withrepeatable results and reasonable accuracy.

The Products are design to be costeffective and complementary. Eachproduct can be sold as individual productrange, but when supplied within acomplete facility some savings can beachieved by the use of a common dataacquisition system.
