Some residents believe the 7pm attack and the murder of Zolani Nelani, Khumbula Jacobs and Masibulele Dayimani, aged between 30 and 35 years, at Chippa’s Tavern in Nibe Street was a deliberate hit despite police reporting it to be a random shooting. “Two suspects entered the tavern and shot randomly, killing three men instantly and seri- ously injuring four,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Thembi Gwe yesterday. The injured, who are between 41 and 53 years of age, were rushed to a Port Elizabeth hospital. For their protection, Gwe did not want to divulge to which hospital the injured were taken. When PE Express Indaba visited the scene yesterday morning, members of the SA Police’s Forensic Department were still taking photo- graphs and checking for finger-prints. According to eye-witnesses who spoke to PE Express Indaba on condition of anonymity, two unknown men entered the tavern wearing re- flector overalls and proceeded to the table where the three men were seated. They started shoot- ing at the men without saying a word. “The gunmen shot the three men and while fleeing the tavern four other men where shot in the process,” said a witness. Many young school leavers face the unfor-tunate situation of being turned away bytertiary institutions. Although entry crite-ria may play a role, the main contributingfactor is the limited number of spacesavailable for new students each year.
According to Natalie Rabson of BostonCity Campus and Business College, it is im-perative that these students do not wastethe year and become an unemployment sta-tistic. She says that it is in fact a great oppor-tunity todeveloppractical skills as a founda-tion which will also be useful in any job, fu-ture studies or career.
Short courses and learning programmeswhich are available at Boston include basicto advanced computer skills, covering every-thing from basic keyboard and Internetskills to specific courses on various pro-grammes. These includeMicrosoftWord, Ex-cel and Powerpoint, as well as Adobe Pho-toshop and Dreamweaver.
Learners can also enrol for the IT shortlearning programme or institute learningprogramme including CompTIA A+ andCompTIA N+ courses which will adequatelyequip them with the skills needed to get anentry level position in the IT industry as atechnician.
“These courses should not simply be seenas time fillers or just something to do forthe year. They are extremely valuable andhave been designed to give learners theskills directly related to the workplace. Vari-ous courses also have the added benefit ofearning credits and gaining advanced place-ment for selected Boston HET courses in2015,” explains Rabson.
HET courses include a variety of careeroptions aside from IT related courses such
as Media and Multimedia Studies to Ac-counting, Marketing and Sales, Tourism,Hospitality and Leisure.
And while this selection means there issomething for everyone, it can also be quitedaunting especially for those who are unde-cided as to what they want to do.
Boston, however, realises this, and there-fore provides continuous guidance and sup-port from themoment prospective studentsenter its doors, starting with its computer-ised assessment tool (Career Compass As-sessment) and qualified career counsellorswho are able to identify your interests, pas-sions and skills and steer you in the direc-tion of a line of study that will suit you.
Furthermore, Boston’s method of tuitionallows students to work at their own pacetaking into account what other commit-ments they may have. This also means thatlearners who are aiming to apply for andcontinue studies for another Boston degreeor diplomawill not be held back should theywork at a quicker pace. Students who needmore time to complete their courses, or whodo not speak English as a home language, may take a bit longer and are also able towork at their own pace and repeat theirmodules via the tuitionmethod if necessary.
The college also has convenient paymentplans to enable fee payers to find a paymentoption to suit their needs.
There are more than 40 Boston City Cam-pus & Business Colleges throughout thecountry offering career guidance and coun-selling. Registrations for the various shortcourses, as well as second semester Degreeand Diploma study options are open.
