The flags of Group B teams Ghana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali and Niger, who will use Nelson Mande- la Bay as the home-base camp, were hoisted in front of the Port Elizabeth City Hall on Vuyisile Mini Square on Friday. Former Bafana Bafana stars Brian Baloyi and Neil Tovey were in Green- acres on Saturday as part of the Afcon Cup Tour to the host cities which was organised by Standard Bank. Football fans came in droves and took pictures with the much sought-after trophy. Speaking during to the hoisting of the flags, MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Xoliswa Tom remind- ed Mandela Bay residents that this province is part of the greater African continent. The MEC suggested that a warm welcoming of the African visi- tors to our shores will address the issue of xenophobia. “They will be staying here for the du- ration of the tournament; or at least un- til they are knocked out of the competi- tion, and will be using Zwide stadium as a training ground,” said Safa Nelson Mandela Bay Vice-President Monde Mhletywa about the four countries who will be calling Nelson Mandela Bay home during the group stages. Mhletywa believes there will be pos- itive economic spin-offs in the region as a result of this. Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality could not host this tournament on its own, the MEC explained, adding that both national and provincial govern- ments made some commitments to en- sure that this African spectacular be- comes a resounding success. “They asked for the commitment of both provincial and national govern- ment. The national treasury has com- mitted R15,9 million while the provin- cial treasury committed R15,4 mil- lion,” said MEC Tom, adding that the municipality would look into the areas that were already within their man- date in terms of budget. Former Bafana and Kaizer Chief’s number one Spider Baloyi wishes Bafana well. He said he trusted the coach’s approach to Afcon and that whoever was selected to play during the competition would make the coun- try proud. Baloyi was, however, quick to add: “We want to urge residents to go out and support Bafana, even if they are knocked out of the competition. This tournament is ours.” This was echoing Nelson Mandela Bay Deputy Mayor Nancy Sihlwayi’s call for residents to buy tickets. “I bought mine already and it is up to you to be part of this momentous oc- casion by also watching the matches in the stadium.” Admiring the Afcon Cup at Greenacres on Saturday, were from left Brian Baloyi, SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Vice-President Monde Mhletywa and his two children Anelisa (10) and Mafu (4) as well as former Bafana Bafana captain Neil Tovey. SIX Uitenhage home-based CareWorkers who volunteered theirservices at theKwaNobuhle clinicwere cheerful, until they were of-fered contracts to work at Em-manuel Haven in Motherwell,Port Elizabeth.

Three of theseworkers spoke toPEExpress Indaba, on condition of ano-nymity, about what they termed asexploitation by the Emmanuel Ha-ven’s management. This allegedly started when they

were asked to submit CVs and prom-ised employment at R1 200 a month.According to the trio, employment

was linked with the Independent De-velopment Trust EC office in Bhisho. This gave themanassurance that theproject was legit and they claim tohave signed contracts to this effect.“After several months of working

without pay we only received R1 000in March 2010 and later in December2010 were told IDT reduced fundingand we were paid R600 each,” saidone complainant, adding that theywere not paid for the whole of 2011except for a payment of R320 each inFebruary.

They said they were later paidR125 each “and told this was changewe received from the IDT.”A meeting was called at Nangoza

Jebe Hall, New Brighton in Aprilthis year for all the careworkers andthat gave them hope.“We signed new contracts offered

by the IDT which promised paymentof R60 per day (of 5 hours) - five daysa week in August. But this still didnot happen,” said another. In all this frustration of working

for no pay, the trio claim that theyare signing and submitting “work-sheets” - a requirement for paymentfor work done - but still do not get the

money on payday. They said they al-so wrote a letter of complaint ad-dressed toNelsonMandelaBayExec-utive mayor Zanoxolo Wayile.Municipal spokesperson Kupido

Baron said that it’s Emmanuel Ha-ven’s Boardmembers that should re-spond on the allegations as the havenis a private institution. The IDTAdministrator,Mvakalisi

Msipha, also referred PE Express In-daba to Emmanuel Haven’s Dr ZukoNxiweni who profusely deniedknowledge of Emmanuel Haven everexploiting anyone.According to DrNxiweni, workers

were paid only when IDT pays Em-

manuelHaven - and that is R63,18 perday for 14 days in the month. He sug-gested that the complainants havethe wrong information.Dr Nxweni instead advised the

group to rather go to their offices inMotherwell for a talk.“We’ve got easy channels of com-

munication; theymust come and dis-cuss whatever problem that theyhave with us. We need to know whothey are and who is their group lead-er,” said Dr Nxiweni. He admitted that they “do have

groups ofworkers fromKwaNobuhlebut I do not know the ones you aretalking about.”

NELSONMandela Bay boxer MakhosonkeZwengu will challenge KwaZulu Natal’sSA Middleweight champion ChristopherButhelezi at the YMCA in Pietermaritz-burg on Thursday, 29 November. This 12-round encounter is part of a Box-

ing Bumper Double Header byPUNCH4PUNCH Productions which willfeature SA Heavyweight champion Wise-man Dlomo (KZN) defending against Gau-teng challenger Anton Nel, also over 12rounds.Zwengu (25) of KwaNobuhle in Uitenha-

ge, currently rated 2 in SA middlweightsafter a record of 17 fights, 14 wins, two loss-es and a draw believes Buthelezi (32-18-12-2) is in for the taking.“Buthelezi has been around for some

time now and I think he’s there for thebeating. He is a short come-forward fight-er who does not have the skill andringcraft that I possess. I’ll use my jab and

keep him at bay all night,” said Zwengu. In his last fight, Zwengu KO’d in the

third round Leon Mriba at the SizakeleKhonzi Hall on 11 September 2011.His trainer at Zama Boxing Club Ntemi

Frans said Zwengu will be fired up to takethe title away from the champion.“We have been working very hard for

this fight and will be going to KZN to bringthe title home,” said Frans, adding that itis almost 11 years since Nelson MandelaBay held a national championship belt.Frans was quick to add, however, that

his charge would like to get support frombig business in the Bay.Zwengu depends solely on boxing to sur-

vive, so with fights too far in between itbecomes a struggle for the unemployedlad.“He needs a whole lot of things to help himprepare for this fight. He needs tracksuitand takkies to look well; and thanks to ourfriend Brian Cohogen we managed to getboxing equipement to sharpen Zwengu’sskills in the gym,” said Frans.

THE Eastern Province Cricket Union host-ed a KFC Mini-Cricket festival at StGeorge’s Park on Friday, with over 700boys and girls between the ages of 3 and 13getting active on the cricket field.

The kids that participated in the festivalcame in school teams with eight players perteam. The teams then each played two games. The KFC Action Zones, which are inflatablesthat enable kids to improve their skills in a funway, were stationed at the ground. But therewasmore to theday today than just

cricket, said Lauren Turnbull, KFC CSI andSponsorships Manager. “The best way to get amessage across to kids is through other kidsand with this in mind we have introduced akids’ ambassador search this year. At each fes-tival we set up an audition area to select kidambassadors who will be used to promote ourKFCMini-Cricket message which is to encour-age kids to get active and get into KFC Mini-

Cricket,” she said.KFC partnered with Cricket South Africa

(CSA) in 2010with the aim of reaching asmanychildren as possible and to promote an activeand balanced lifestyle. The 2011/12 season sawthe programme grow by 20%, double the targetset, so there are now over 100 000 kids activelyinvolved.“This season we will ensure that we main-

tain and improve the quality of cricket playedby the children and will continue to encourageenrolment. Amain focus for this seasonwill bethe growthofKFCMini-Cricket into rural com-munities,” said Niels Momberg, Youth CricketManager at CSA.AB De Villiers has been an ambassador of

KFCMini-Cricket since 2010 and is an inspira-tion to the kids involved. “Everyone needs anintroduction into a particular sport and wecouldn’t ask forabetterwaythantobe involvedin KFC Mini-Cricket. I believe this season willentice evenmore kids into the programme andI bet it will unearth some characters as ambas-sadors. I will have to work hard to keep my po-sition as the ambassador,” De Villiers said.
