Problem being attempted to change:To change the mentality of the villagers living nearby school

& in the village regarding the personal hygiene by treat wastewater .That how it keeps them away from diseases. Like

Malaria and all which are caused by misusing water and also effecting learning level of their children ,to generate

awareness in community about the Importance of water and best way to treat wastewater for cleanliness & maintaining

hygiene at personal level & surroundings .

About The Community

• Geographical Location:- The village Gilakaur situated in remote area nearly 130kms away from Jodhpur District. It is situated in the midst of sand dunes & 30 km. inside from NH 114 Jodhpur-Jaisalmer Highway.

• Cultural Background: - There isRajput, Bishnoi, Meghwal, Prajapat & Suthar etc. castes in Gilakaur. Dominating caste is Meghwal. Main resources of livelihood are farming & animal husbandry. Only 40 % community is literate. Orthodox families having strong belief in traditions & customs.

• Role of Satya Bharti School in the Village: The school has worked as changing in attitude towards education especially for girl child. We organizes PTMs & community development campaigns in which we not only discuss on the development of students but also generate awareness about education, health & hygiene, environmental awareness & other social burning issues etc.

• Participation in ‘Design for Change’ School Contest: This contest has provided us a platform that from a small village we can share our efforts which is creating awareness in community nearby & provided us an opportunity to show our efforts.

• We felt children are not coming school

properly and after look deeply got a big reason

that they are suffering from health and dieses

like malaria. Then we visit their houses and

felt all is happening because of wasting and

misusing water as they have open drain in

their houses which is inviting mosquitoes .

Even there were some parents or the families

on the way whom we see that they live in quiet

unhygienic manner. .NOW TIME TO DO

ACTION we held a rally to aware villagers

about stop wasting water in open drain to

keep their happy family away from dieses and

about the importance of hygiene that how it

keeps us fit & healthy always stroked us.

Community will understand the importance of cleanliness to maintain good distance from dieses and best way of use wastewater by using Soak Pit.

Creating awareness especially among women who generaly herself gives big participation in cleanliness about surroundings and giving messages to children to be clean themselves as their first teacher at home .

Students won’t miss schools due to sickness

We Did:

• A rally in whole village for the awareness

The students organized a campaign to bring aboutawareness on waste water in school , at home andIn the neighbourhood. The students spoke about how to good use of wastewater , pollution of waste water in themorning assembly. They chanted slogans on best way to waste water utilize

community.

• Fixed a date for the Awareness drive a door to door Rally .

• Showed a video clip on best way of waste water .

• Shared our experiences & asked community to share their experiences regarding the open Drains Shifting in Closed Drains.

• How We Can make soak pit for Waste Water.

At first I didn'tknow about this method. All the water from washing upwent to waste. Now, after learning about this method, awaste water pit has been made. From here, a small ditchcarries water and bathroom area. Nowthe washing area is better managed. A small amount of work hassolved the waste water problem. Now waste water from ourhouse is recharge in ground .This method is really easy and efficient. Now others arestarting to use the same method in the village.

Hanuman Singh Head Teacher – “It was really great time & also quiet challenging that we entered in the houses of community & found the cleanliness & telling them how to waste water we said this all disease are due to waste water & happens to all at that time kids faced them well present themselves as an examples explaining with the help of charts which really touched their heart & impact can be seen in previous pictures.”

Sharvan Kanwar Teacher - We felt people were ready to do action against this problem but they didn’t know ‘what and how to do? Even they had maid big pit , But water overcame due to soap water . So after knowing about soak pit their reactions were very supportive .

Impact on us & Community

• Help of teachers We come to know about the importance of maintaining wastewater. In some of the houses there were instant impact & where they throws used water in open area also in open drains , then they first convert it into closed drains & then prepared a soak pit. We were feeling proud & also praised & thanked them for taking initiative on there own. While we cleaning some areas where water collects our teachers also joined us.

• Repoters on Dainik Bhaskar gave coverage of the Rally.

Future Ahead

• We know that road ahead is very tough.

• This is not the ending but the beginning of “ A Best way to Treat Waste Water ”

• But things need care and continue .• Soak Pit will need proper caring. For this a big participation of

community is needed .

• Low operating cost & simple technique for all users.

• We will Discuss On This Topic with Representatives of Gram Panchayat , hope that they will talk to community & will get support from Administration .
