The word spatial originated from Latin 'spatium', which means space

Since 'geo' is from Greek 'gaya' meaning Earth, geospatial thus means earth-space

NASA says 'geospatial means the distribution of something in a geographic sense

Approach to Opening up Govt. Information for Re-use

• Dec 2009, Open Data Directive issued by the President

• 9 May 2013, Executive order by President on Open Data Policy-Managing Information as an Asset. Requires all data to be made machine readable by default

• 2010, Letters from the PM to Govt Departments to open up data

• June 2012, Open Data White paper issued by Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General

• Sep 2013, New National Action Plan: From Open Data to Open Government

• MOF issued IM to all agencies on data-sharing

• Efforts led by OneMap championed by the Singapore Land Authority

• eGov2015 Masterplan for data.gov.sg

Open data in machine readable format

• All agencies are required to collect or create information in a way that supports downstream information processing and dissemination activities.

• Data shall be machine-readable and in open formats, data standards and common core and extensible metadata for all new information creation and collection efforts

• Agencies will publish their own Open Data Strategies and sets out how they are going to stimulate a market for its use

• Led by the Transparency and Open Data team in the Cabinet Office, working across government departments to ensure that data is released in a timely and accessible way.

• New National Action Plan to make data open by default (Oct 2013)

• Increase Data sharing for government agencies

• Commitment for Govt to increase datasets for release

• Promote co-creation efforts with citizens/biz

• Make all datasets on data.gov.sg and OneMap machine-readable by the end of 2013

National Portal • www.data.gov has 91,054 datasets, 349 citizen developed aps, 137 mobile aps with 175 agencies and subagencies.

• www.data.gov.uk has over 14,000 datasets

• Includes GIS data search, tools for developers e.g. API access to catalogue.

• www.data.gov.sg has over 9,000 datasets

• OneMap, a geospatial data sharing platform, has 60 different map themes
