How to use the Training Directory

The courses in the directory are set out in the three main categories of need:

Social, Emotional and Mental Health

Communication and Interaction

Cognition and Learning

Further courses may be advertised during the year to meet additional training needs and these will

be updated on Educate Weekly and Educate Extra – Inclusion.

All Communication & Interaction and the Cognition & Learning courses in this Training Directory can

be delivered directly to schools for the following charges (unless otherwise stated):

Whole School:

Half day = £515.00

Full day = £1,025.00

Twilight = £260.00 (maximum two hours)

How to Apply

Please apply for the training courses via email: inclusionandinterventiontraining@milton-

keynes.gov.uk stating the course, the date, who will be attending and their job role, including special

requirements/needs that the trainer should be aware of.

If any course is oversubscribed you will be asked if you would like to join the next course or be put on

a waiting list.

You will be informed if you have been allocated a place on the course.

Courses to be booked at least two weeks before course delivery date. Where there are too few

attendees to make sessions viable to run, notice of cancellation will be given at one – two weeks

prior to the course delivery date.

We ask everyone to complete an evaluation form at the end of training sessions. We take your

feedback about training very seriously and your remarks will guide us when planning future training.

We are also able to deliver training packages that are tailored to the individual needs of the school/setting or to the needs of a group of school/settings (for instance schools that are federated, settings that have multiple sites under one overarching company, or schools that are in the same locality). FACT and FACT Plus (Tools to Profile a Child and Young Person’s Speech, Language and Communication Needs and/or Social Communication Needs) – Early Years

Course summary: A course for staff or colleagues who are new to the FACT and FACT Plus documents. The revised FACT and FACT Plus are tools to support children and young people who may have an unidentified speech, language and communication need and/or social communication difficulty. The FACT Plus follows on from the FACT (First Assess Communication Tool), and is used to profile children and young people who are presenting with a degree of difficulty in the areas of Social Interaction and Social Communication. The FACT Plus profile will highlight any difficulties in these areas and provide a range of strategies and resources to support. Attachment – Do you know me? Course summary: This training aims to develop an understanding of attachment for children who have suffered loss or trauma. It will consider practical classroom strategies to develop a safe haven to support these children within a mainstream school. Trainers: Members of the Inclusion and Intervention Team Course content: • An understanding of attachment and how it impacts on the behaviour of some children • An awareness of some of the needs of children who have suffered loss or trauma • An understanding of the importance of fostering a nurturing environment • Practical strategies to support these children within a mainstream classroom Course dates and times: 11 December 2019, 9.15-11.45am 06 February 2020, 1.00-3.30pm Venue: Civic Offices, Central Milton Keynes MK9 3EJ Who should attend? This training is useful for teachers, SENCos, teaching assistants and learning mentors working within a mainstream setting. It is recommended that teaching assistants attend alongside a class teacher or SENCo. Supporting a child to manage their anxiety - SEMH Course summary: This training aims to provide staff with a clear understanding of what anxiety is and how to identify the signs a child is suffering with anxiety within their classroom. It will look at the different assessments and strategies to be used to help a pupil manage their anxiety successfully. Trainers: Members of the Inclusion and Intervention Team Course content:

An understanding of anxiety and the different types of anxiety a child may be experiencing

An awareness of how anxiety can be displayed differently in children

Explore strategies and resources to help reduce anxiety for children within the mainstream classroom

Identifying assessment tools that can be used as part of the assess, plan, do, review cycle when supporting a child with anxiety

SEMH in the Mainstream Classroom Course summary: This training aims to develop an understanding of what children’s behaviour may be communicating to the adults who work with them. It focusses on meeting the needs of all children, including those with SEMH needs, by ensuring that Quality First Teaching provides an effective starting point for managing children’s behaviour in a mainstream setting. Trainers: Members of the Inclusion and Intervention Team Course content: • Develop an understanding of how children communicate their needs through their behaviours • Identifying possible causes for the observable behaviours • Creating a positive classroom environment with systems and strategies that support effective

Developing resilience and well-being in school Course summary: This training aims to develop an understanding of resilience as an important key to promoting children’s well-being. It will focus on the protective factors that enable children to be resilient when they encounter challenges and problems. Trainers: Members of the Inclusion and Intervention Team Course content:

Identify risk factors that can impact on a child’s mental health and well-being

Consider protective factors that enable children to be resilient and school structures that can support these children

Training Session for TAs Who Are Supporting Young Pupils in Foundation Stage This training session forms part of the inclusion and intervention team’s transition support to schools and places will be limited. Audience: TAs who are supporting individual/groups of pupils with SEND in foundation stage. A refresher of skills and strategies, or to learn new skills Inclusion and Intervention Team will identify key schools. Additional places will be available, but limited. Trainers: Inclusion and Intervention Team Course content: This course has a practical focus- practitioners can learn about strategies to support all young learners, as well as strategies for individual pupils with a range of needs:

The role of the Early Years SENCo – professional development course Course summary:

This course runs over three half day sessions. Trainers:

About your role as a SENCo and how this relates to both the national and local picture.

How to support and work with other staff and parents.

How you can assess and plan for pupils with SEND using the graduated response model.

How processes work in Milton Keynes (including paperwork, funding, SEND Local Offer)

How you can meet the needs of different learners in your setting. Course dates and times: Strand 1: 24 October, 07 and 21 November 2019, 9.30am-12.00pm Strand 2: 30 January, 13 and 27 February 2020, 9.30am-12.00pm Venue: Civic Offices, Central Milton Keynes MK9 3EJ Who should attend?

For new or inexperienced SENCos working in non-maintained and maintained early years settings and OFSTED registered Childminders. Also useful for existing SENCos wishing to refresh their knowledge and understanding.

Making Sense of Autism Course summary General awareness and basic understanding of autism spectrum disorder, as well as ideas to develop successful relationships and interactions within their roles in school. This course will also be appropriate for staff that are new-to-role or new to working within schools, settings and other environments. Who should attend? This is a half-day basic presentation aimed at all staff within any education setting including office staff, governors, caretakers, drivers and escorts. Early Years ASD/SCD Awareness Course summary: This course runs for one whole day. Training: Inclusion and Intervention Specialist Teacher and Speech and Language Therapist Course content: Attendees will learn:

How Social Communication Difficulties (SCD) and Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) present in young children, including sensory sensitivities.

What you can do to support young pupils with SCD/ASD in the following areas: - Communication and interaction - Play and learning through a structured approach (TEACCH) - Meeting sensory needs - How to understand and manage behaviour

Course dates and times: 13 November 2019, 9.00am-4.30pm 04 March 2020, 9.00am-4.00pm Venue: Civic Offices, Central Milton Keynes MK9 3EJ Who should attend? Practitioners working in maintained and non-maintained early years settings (nurseries and pre-schools) and OFSTED registered childminders. Understanding and Managing Behaviours of Concern in Children and Young People with Autistic Spectrum Disorder and Social Communication Difficulties Course summary: A course to develop an understanding of why children and young people with ASD and Social Communication Difficulties display behaviours of concern. The course looks at the reasons behind the behaviour and provides a tool with which to unpick the behaviour and support children and young people in your setting. Trainers: Members of the Inclusion and Intervention Team Course content:

How the characteristics of Autism and associated psychological theories impact on behaviour

How to use the iceberg and STAR tools to identify and unpick underlying reasons for behaviour

Know strategies and resources to support children and young people

Headteachers, class teachers and teaching assistants who are working with children and young people with ASD or SCD. Using Sensory Activity Breaks to Support Children with ASD/Sensory Integration Difficulties Course summary: It is being increasingly recognised that children, particularly with ASD/SCD, may have difficulties with sensory processing and integration and require activity breaks to allow them to be in the calm/alert state that is optimum for learning. This course looks at ways this may be achieved in a mainstream classroom. Using Rainbow Road Course summary: The Rainbow Road Programme has been created to help children aged from four to 12 years of age with specific learning difficulties. Speech and Language Therapy Early Years communication training Course summary Session 1 Typical speech, language and communication development By the end of Session 1 session, participants will:

Have an awareness of the current context relating to Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).

Have knowledge of speech, language and communication developmental milestones in children aged 0-5 years.

Profile a child’s speech, language and communication development.

Have an understanding of universal, targeted and specialist levels of provision. Session 2 Positive approaches to support communication development By the end of Session 2, participants will:

Have an awareness of strategies to support all children’s communication development at the universal and targeted level.

Consider the role of the environment in supporting speech, language and communication

Develop understanding and awareness of resources and considerations for running successful language groups
