Outcomes for TodayAt the end of todays session you should

    be able to:-

    Identify and describe Maxillary Incisors

    Identify and describe Mandibular Incisors

Teeth begin to develop in the alveolar process during

the sixth week of fetal life. A tiny tooth bud forms

(tooth germ) where four or more growth centers are

present. From these growth centers developmental

lobes are formed. These lobes grow and develop

until they fuse together to form a tooth.

    Incisors

    5/29

    Incisors

    Incisors have four lobes

Three on labial surface of a tooth

One on the lingual surface of a tooth

  • 7/31/2019 Incisors Ver2

    6/29

    Incisors

The three labial lobes fuse together to form thelabial surface and incisal ridge. The labiallobes are named according to location:-

    Mesiofacial

    Centrofacial

    Distofacial

The lingual lobe makes up the Cingulum on thelingual surface of the tooth

The permanent dentition has eight incisorsin total:-

    Four in the maxillary arch

    Four in the mandibular arch

Each arch contains two Central Incisors andtwo Lateral Incisors

    Central Incisor

Facial View Generally has a smooth enamel

    surface

The distance between the mesialand distal surfaces is the widest ofall anterior teeth

    Usually looks symmetrical inshape

    Generally has a straight incisaledge

  • 7/31/2019 Incisors Ver2

    10/29

    Central Incisor

    Facial View

The distal marginal ridge is morecurved than the mesial marginal

ridge and generally appears fairlystraight in outline

    Mesioincisal corner is

relatively sharp compared todistoincisal corner which isgenerally rounder.

  • 7/31/2019 Incisors Ver2

    11/29

    Mesial and Distal View

Incisal ridge bisects thecentre of the root

The labial is slightly convexbulging out from the cervicalline or CementoenamelJunction (CEJ)

The peak of the labialconvexity is one third the waydown the from the cervical

    line

    Lateral Incisor

    Facial View

The Lateral Incisor is a smallerand more rounded version ofthe Central Incisor

  • 7/31/2019 Incisors Ver2

    15/29

    Lateral Incisor

    Mesial and Distal View

Labial surface is moreconvex than the CentralIncisor

Mesial and distal aspectsare triangular in shape

    Mesial Distal

  • 7/31/2019 Incisors Ver2

    16/29

    Lateral Incisor

    Lingual View

Lingual features are similarto the Central Incisor butare more highly developed

Lingual surface has a deepfossa and often a lingual pit

  • 7/31/2019 Incisors Ver2

    17/29

    Lateral Incisor

    Occlusal View

    Incisal features are

triangular in shape with avery clear incisal ridge thatslopes lingually
