!!!!Pride is evident in the solemn music playing, the sharply ironed

creases of your gown, the triumphant smile you can't wipe off your

face and the tears on your mother's cheeks. You did it you graduated

from college. You are now the fortunate recipient of a bachelor's degree.

However, some journalism students are deciding that a four-year degree

is no longer enough. Trends indicate that more journalism students enrollin graduate or law school after obtaining their undergraduate degree an

even larger number returns to school after several years in the workforce.

Many students seeking a graduate journalism degree look to Colum-

bia University. Monica Burnette, Assistant Director of Admissions and

Financial Aid for Columbia's graduate journalism school, commented on

the school's sharp increase in applications.

We saw an increase overall in all three of our programs (Master of

Science, Master of Arts, and PhD) but the largest increase was in our

Master of Science program, she said. This year we experi-

enced a 40 percent increase in applications. Columbia

receives applications from a mix of undergraduate

majors, varying from history and art to journal-

    ism and communications.

!!!!"#!$%&'(!$%)$!*'+!,+'+-$!*.!+'$+/&'0!0/)1!school right away is that you are really

being able to hone and develop your skills

in a very practical and hands-on way,

Burnette said. We're giving you the tools

so that, hopefully, when you enter the job

market, it will really help you to be well-

    prepared.

    The relationships and networking students

gain during their time at Columbia or any

grad school reap rewards in the workforce as

    well, Burnette said.

Using your resources while going to grad school helps you catapult

    your career, she said.

Law school is another path taken by some Ohio University journalism

    grads.

There's always been a fair number of [Scripps] students who decide

    to go on to law

    school, said

    Edith Dashiell,

    Assistant Dean

    of the Scripps

    College of

    Communication,

    adding that they

    do so only if they

what they want to do with a law degree. Students that I've come in con-

tact choose to go to law school or choose to go to grad school because

that's part of their career path.

Journalism students and faculty alike suggest an undergraduate degree

in journalism is extremely valuable for a career in law.

Journalism is a great base for legal education and a career in law, said Tom Hodson, Director of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism.

Hodson, who teaches Communication Law at OU, has also served as a

judicial fellow in the United States Supreme Court as well as a judge for

the Athens County Court of Common Pleas.

Many of the traits between the professions are identical: the ability to

    analyze situations, form questions, com-

pile data, and write and think quickly and

logically, Hodson said. He added that there are

many career paths available for a student with an

educational background in journalism and law.

There are a growing number of jobs related

to law and communication. A law degree

    choices, he said.More pre-law students

    are beginning to see the

    value in a journalism

    degree. Freshman Kerri

    Hinkle plans to go into

    law, and is double majoring

    in journalism and political science

    pre-law.

I believe journalism will prepare me for law

school because journalism places a high emphasis on

expressing oneself through words effectively, as well as research and

some levels of analytical thinking, Hinkle said. In all levels of law, it i

incredibly important to be able to effectively communicate through writ-

ten words and verbal communication. Also, journalists learn to research

and dig up the truth a skill necessary for a lawyer.

Ashley Yeager is a student who has lived in both worlds. She gradu-

ated from Scripps in 2007 with a degree in Public Relations, went on

to receive her Master's degree in Business Administration from the

California University of Pennsylvania in one year, and is now a student

    in Duquesne University's law program.

I decided to get my MBA right after Scripps because I didn't want a

lack of education to ever hold me back in the career I was in, she said.

She agreed that the experience she gained through Scripps gave her

valuable preparation for graduate and law school. Writing in general is

so important, especially in law. Having that good basis of writing skills

is really helpful in both my graduate and law school careers, Yeager

    said. (Continued on Page 2)

No matter where students choose to go after graduating from Scripps,

they cant go wrong with an undergraduate journalism degree, Yeagersaid. Use those communication skills in any way you can, whether that

Twenty to thirty years ago, fewer people had college degrees, Hodson

said. Now a college undergraduate degree is commonplace. A graduate

degree can make a person distinctive.

However, its important for students to make timely decisions. For

    $%*3+!!+3D+8&)667!&.!

there are loans to be paid off.

I always advocate that its important for a student to have a masters

A masters degree or law degree is always an option students dont

give it up if they choose not to go to grad school right after college. For

some, gaining a few years of journalism experience and then deciding to

further their education is the right choice.

Other students graduate with an absolute certainty that a career as a

journalist is what they want. Yeager said that these students should go

ahead and follow that path. Use your resources, use internships, and-'1!$%+!)/+)!&'!

Students with an interest in public broadcasting should consider

applying to be a communications intern with the Association of Public

    Television Stations.

about 15 to 16 professionals.Communications interns will be responsible for working with online

tools, including blogs and social networking sites, as well as updating

the groups Web site and keeping it visually appealing. Davis said that

working with social media and other types of technology is a big part of

    the interns responsibilities.

Reaching our communities is important, Davis said. A lot of us

dont have time to do it and we really depend on the interns for that.Interns will also assist the Communication Director with the groups

legislative efforts for public broadcasting. Much of the internship will

focus on public relations duties, as the student will also be responsible

for creating and using press releases and other media fact sheets. The

intern will keep track of station activities, as the information can later be

used for communication with the media, as well as grassroots efforts.

Davis said that one of the most important things that an intern can

gain from working with APTS is exposure, due to the fact that interns

will have the chance to network with professionals and work closely

with those that are practicing public broadcasting.

Interested students should have a strong attention to detail and good

communication skills, as well as be able to conduct effective in-depth

research. APTS is looking for an intern with availability from January

through May. Interested students will need to submit a resume and coverletter, as well as a current transcript, to APTS. #
