Classical guitarist andformer Esterhazy resi-dent, Stephen Weiss willbe performing live at TheMaple Leaf Theatre inJanuary.

Weiss has taught gui-tar in the public and pri-vate school systems, aswell as Mount Royal Uni-versity (Calgary), classi-cal guitar masterclasses, music festival adjudica-tion and is currentlyteaching at his privatehome studio in the WestIsland of Montréal. Pri-vate lessons include stu-dents of all ages, rangingfrom beginners interestedin playing by ear, to clas-sical guitar studentspreparing for Royal Con-servatory of Musicgraded examinations.

At a recent privateevent held at the RitzCarlton Montréal, associ-ated with the Musée desbeaux-arts de Montréal,Stephen had the chanceto play for and meet withrenowned Canadian clas-sical guitarist, LionaBoyd: the first recordedguitarist he had heardwhile learning to readsolo guitar music. “Ms.Boyd was a pleasure tomeet during the eveningevent dinner. She kindlyshared a few stories andgave very warm compli-ments regarding my per-formance of the pieceswhich I had prepared.”Five-time Juno award-winning Ms. Boyd hastoured extensively, recording several albumsand now resides in theToronto area.

Weiss now resides withhis “Little Sunshine,”daughter Mayla, in Mon-tréal. He maintains abusy teaching schedule,as well as performing inand around the greatermetropolitan area.

Weiss was raised on afarm outside of Gerald. He was inspired by musichis sister Katherine was

playing at the time, andstudied privately andperformed in PotashvilleMusic Festivals until theage of 10. Thereupon,Stephen’s parents, Roseand Charlie Weiss, bought him an electricguitar. From then on, heset out to explore the in-strument, trying out a va-riety of styles, from rockand country to classicaland jazz.

Initially, being self-taught on the classicalguitar during his highschool years, and laterstudying as a student atthe University ofSaskatchewan withSaskatoon guitarist BenSchenstead, an earlyrecording of Liona Boydfirst drew him in to thehaunting and beautifulsounds of the instrument.

Stephen’s formal train-ing has included obtain-ing a B.Mus. in Music.Ed.degree from the Univer-sity of Saskatchewan, and also attending andplaying in masterclasses

with concert players suchas Pavel Steidl (Czech Re-public), Scott Tennant,David Tanenbaum (USA)and others.

“When at a young age, after my father hadshown me a few chords,(Charlie, truly and suc-cessfully hides 90 percent of his musical virtu-osit behind his stellargardening skills), I was

kindly asked to attendlocal Gerald-gigging bandrehearsals (thank youCharlotte Thievin-Neyed-ley!). I got a first taste ofwhat it was like to playwith good musicians andamazing ears. They usu-ally left me far behindwhen they played a tune, but the encouragementand warmth was stagger-ing. Leaving behind the

difference between thecommon meaning of thewords ‘formal’ and ‘infor-mal,’ this was my first‘formal’ musical training,”said Stephen. “Because ofthe constant strength ofour school music pro-gram, supported by pri-vate instruction andcommunity interest, Es-terhazy was a great placefor a young musician. Many names come tomind of past (and pres-ent) influences: schoolband/music teachers, gig-ging musicians in thearea and people dedi-cated to the arts andmusic education, to whomstudents are forever in-debted for the valuable,life-long aesthetic experi-ences they provide. Onthat note, it will be myabsolute pleasure to per-form classical guitarworks at the Maple LeafTheatre!”

Classically guitarspeaking, Stephen playsmusic from the Renais-sance period to the pres-ent. Many pieces, writtenby composers from the1600’s and onwards, areoriginal compositions forthe guitar and a few aretranscriptions, initiallycomposed for violin, luteor keyboard. Composersof many areas of Europe,North, South and CentralAmerica are highlightedin the guitar music thathe performs.

From Bach to Rock, music takes us to themost fantastic places, often times transportingus hundreds of years intothe past and across na-tional borders at thesound of a chord ormelody.

As Goethe wrote:“Music begins wherewords end.”

Maple Leaf Theatre wasthe perfect place for newlypublished author ChelseaBleau to share her storywhile autographing copiesof her debut book.

Bleau is a self-pro-claimed artist, originatingfrom Esterhazy. She hasalways had an interest inthe arts, including writ-ing, music, visual art, andphotography, and has nowaccomplished publishingher first book.

She started writing it in2015, as a project called ItGets Worse, when she wasconsistently learningmore and more about life, and felt the need to con-tinue on with writing. Now, with her book com-plete, she is ready to openup an honest discussionabout mental illness.

Bleau’s book entitledScreaming, Crying,Laughing and Vomiting –Excerpts via Insanity isnot only a short autobiog-raphy about herself andher family, but also some-what of a self help book,

containing advice and cop-ing techniques that shehas learned throughoutthe years in the mentalhealth system.

The main objective ofwriting this book was tohelp herself: however, itbecame a journey to disin-tegrate the stigma onmental illness. As shestates in her book, “Thisstory is not an invitationto a pity party. Take it asyou will, but the reasonI’m writing this is mainlyfor myself. And hopefullyto inspire other people. Iguess you could call it oneof those cliche ‘It Gets Bet-ter’ kind of things. Except,I don’t really believe inthat. It gets better. Andthen it gets worse. Andthen it gets better, and it’sup and down and allaround. It makes youwant to scream, cry, laugh, and vomit. And that’s life.”

Bleau’s book containssome subject matter notfor the faint of heart; how-ever, it paints a picture ofwhat it’s like to live with,or around mental illness.

The short autobiogra-

phy starts with a memorywhen Bleau was onlyseven years old. A mem-ory of the first time sheheard voices, uncontrol-lable internal dialogueand imagery. She thoughtshe was going insane andher awareness of her fam-ily’s mental illness madeeverything much morefrightening. “I was layingin bed at my grandpar-ents’ farm trying to sleep.Everything started goingreally fast for some rea-son, it felt like mythoughts were a maze andI was trying to get out ofit. So many thoughts atonce and all of it was non-sense. All I could focus onwas the screaming. WhenI say my thoughts were amaze, I’m almost being lit-eral. For some reason, mymind wouldn’t stop imag-ining this character run-ning through a maze, butevery so often the world

would cave in and shewould fall through. Icouldn’t stop the imageryand it was like it wasforced into my head. Itwas also frustrating be-cause I just wanted her toget through the maze. Itmade it hard to breathe.”

Bleau’s book is essen-tially a journal of her life. She describes how hermother had developedparanoid schizophreniaand her father had left.Social services werecalled, which led to hersiblings and her beingseparated into fosterhomes when she was justan infant. However, herg r e a t - g r a n d m o t h e r(Granny) and her aunt

took her and her siblingsin to live with them.

The autobiographyhighlights memoriesthroughout her life aboutmental health, addictionand her journey into re-covery. It is a very impor-tant read for anyoneaffected or wanting moreof an understanding ongrowing up with andaround mental health ill-ness. It is estimated thatin Canada, only one out offive children who needmental health services re-ceives them.

Although Chelsea’sbook sold out at her booksigning, she has more onorder and she may be re-turning for another book

signing in January whenthey arrive. Her book isalso available as an ebookand can be ordered online.

Hardcovers are avail-able to order online athttps://goo.gl/fkvmLb andthe ebook is available athttps://goo.gl/aGH7Gc.

Sometimes, you justcan’t say it as well as thepoliticians can say it intheir own words.

There again, sometimes, one suspects the politi-cians likely very much re-gret what they’ve said.

Whatever the case, hereare some best (and worst)quotes from our provincialpoliticians and senior pub-lic servants in 2016:

“I try to blend principlesand politics. Sometimesprinciples win.” Jan. 4, for-mer NDP leadership hope-ful Ryan Meili who hadjust tweeted “Very sad tosee (NDP leader) @cam-broten change his posi-tion, ignore @sask_NDPpolicy on FN (First Na-tion) revenue sharing.

“If you really don’t likeprison food, there’s oneway to avoid it: Don’t go toprison.” Jan. 6, PremierBrad Wall facing criticismfor privatized delivery offood served in remandcentres.

“Ever wonder what theSask. Party did with ourresource wealth? Theyflew it away.” January

NDP pre-election adver-tisement targeting gov-ernment money spent tofly in Japanese senseis toteach “lean” techniques inhealth care.

“The government usu-ally isn’t in the business ofbuying land.” Feb. 4,Provincial Auditor JudyFerguson’s initially as-sessment on the GlobalTransportation Hub buy-ing 204-acre land for$103,000 an acre.

“The choice is prettyclear this election. Actionor talk. Forward or back-ward.” March 7, Wall onthe day he called the elec-tion.

“Brad Wall’s mothershould have taken anabortion pill.” DeletedFacebook post that forcedWeyburn-Big Muddy can-didate Mark Jeworski onMarch 11 to resign – oneof four NDP candidatesdropped for past socialmedia posts.

“You ripped off nuns andthat’s the gospel truth.”March 23, Broten duringthe provincial leaders’ de-bate, referring to the GTH

land once owned by OurLady of the Missions.

“No tax increases.” June1, government highlight of2016-17 budget thatwould eventually prove tohave a billion-dollardeficit.

“This might seemalarmist or overly dra-matic, but it’s not.” June9, Wall on the “existentialthreat” of the federalNDP’s Leap Manifestothat he said was feedingthe anti-Keystone XLpipeline.

“The GTH’s uniqueboard governance and theactive involvement of theGTH Chair/Minister (BillBoyd) and multiple gov-ernment agencies addedcomplexity to buying theEast Parcels …The Officefound the Government didnot take sufficient andtimely action to mitigateits, and ultimately the tax-payers’, exposure to pay-ing for increases in landvalues.” June 30, Fergusonin her report on GTH landdeal.

“The Auditor found nowrong-doing.” June 30,Wall, quoting a press re-lease issued by Fergusonthat day.

“I have no words to de-scribe how sorry I am tomy family, to my col-leagues and to all the peo-ple of Saskatchewan formy actions. But sayingsorry is not enough.” Aug.6, former deputy premierDon McMorris after beingcaught driving with ablood alcohol content wellover the .08 legal limit.

“I call on Saskatchewan

people to rise above intol-erance, to be our best andto be the kind of neigh-bours and fellow citizenswe are reputed to be.”Aug.14, a Wall Facebookpost in the wake ofracially charged hateposts following shootingdeath of 22-year-oldColten Boushie of the RedPheasant First Nation.

“To start moving the

province back to balance, significant restraint meas-ures are needed.” Nov. 22,Finance Minister KevinDoherty in the mid-yearupdate of his 2016-17budget.

“The audit did not con-clusively state there wasno evidence of fraud, con-flict of interest or wrong-doing with respect tothese GTH transactions.”

Nov. 28, Ferguson, before alegislative committee clar-ifying what her she tryingto in say in her GTH re-port and press release.

“How is it going tochange behaviour? This isnot the best way to fightclimate change.” Dec. 7,Wall signalling he wouldnot sign on to the federalcarbon pricing agreement.

“Has anybody seen the mouthpiece for my new trumpet? . . . ”

T H E E D I T O R ʼ S D E S K

An important part of preparing for the New Year is toreview the past year—to release it—and to learn fromit. In order to embrace the new, we must release the old.

The following questions should stimulate your think-ing for this process. I hope that you take time out ofyour busy schedule this holiday season to ponder whereyou are and where you’ve been. Talk with people youcare about. Write out your thoughts and feelings. Dosome journaling. Consider writing a letter—an end-ofthe-year-epistle to yourself. It could be profound towrite it and valuable to read it in the years ahead.

Reflect upon what you did, how you felt, what youliked, what you didn’t and what you learned. Try to lookat yourself and your experience with as much objectiv-ity as you can.

Here are some suggestions to get you started inmulling over the past year—perhaps the last decade.Feel free to add your own.• What did I learn? (skills, knowledge, awareness, etc.)• What did I accomplish? A list of my wins and achieve-

ments.• What would I have done differently? Why?• What did I complete or release? What still feels in-

complete to me?• What were the most significant events of the year

past? List the top three.• What did I do right? What do I feel especially good

about? What was my greatest contribution?• What were the fun things I did? What were the not-

so-fun?• What were my biggest challenges/roadblocks/difficul-

ties?• How am I different this year than last?• For what am I particularly grateful?

Consider listing all the things in your life of whichyou’d like to let go—anything you no longer want. Givethanks for what they’ve brought you in terms of learn-ing and usefulness and then burn the list. It’s a sym-bolic gesture to help you release the old and be open tothe new. The next step is to list what you do want—ex-periences, knowledge, material things, relationships,

healings, whatever.… I’m confident that anything youcan do to make this year-end more dramatic in terms ofyour own personal and spiritual growth will be valu-able.

As we reflect on 2016, let’s look back at the headlinesthroughout the year as well.

The holidays oftenbrings out the best in peo-ple. We open our hearts. We look for opportunitiesto give.

But what is reallyamazing is the number ofpeople who keep thisChristmastime spiritalive the entire year.

I may be completely bi-ased but I happen to thinkwe have an abundance ofthose people inSaskatchewan.

Like employees at aSaskatchewan oil com-pany, who in the middle ofgreat financial stress intheir industry, lent a help-ing hand.

They raised more than$130,000 to help an in-

jured co-worker and hisfamily when they neededthat support the most.

Like the 100 year-oldgentleman from MapleCreek who is not sure howmany years he has beenvolunteering. Maybe 40.Maybe 50. Maybe even60.

And he says he’s goingto go on as long as he can.And I believe he will.

Like the community ofMeadow Lake whobanded together to raisemoney for a local musi-cian facing a medical cri-sis.

She gave the gift of herlove for music to others. Now a gift of love is re-turning to her.

I am so proud to be afellow citizen of thisprovince.

I can’t say enough aboutthe many, many people inour province who give oftheir time and energy tothose in need of some helpand maybe even some en-couragement.

People who understandwhat it means to shine alight into someone else’slife. Knowing that onesmall candle in the midstof darkness can spread

light and hope.At Christmas, we cele-

brate the birth of a tinybaby. The Light of theWorld.

The Son of God whostepped down fromheaven and came to walkamong us.

To heal us, to love us, tolive as we live.

And His message of loveand peace has notchanged in over 2000

years. It is still the message of

Christmas today. Joy tothe world. The Lord hascome.

This year let’s continueto share joy and peace, and spread love and goodwill to those around us.Together let’s shine ourlight and make a differ-ence.

So from me and my wifeTami, and our family, and

on behalf of my colleaguesin the Government ofSaskatchewan:

May the blessing ofpeace,

The beauty of hope,

the spirit of love, and the comfort of faith

be your gift this Christmasseason.

Merry Christmas and aHappy New Year!

Cont’d from page 3illness in their lifetime.Eight per cent of adultswill experience major de-pression at some time intheir lives and one percent will experience bipolar disorder or manicdepression.

Did you know thatSchizophrenia affects oneper cent of the Canadianpopulation? Anxiety disor-ders affect five per cent ofthe household population, causing mild to severe im-pairment. Suicide ac-counts for 24 per cent ofall deaths among 15-24year olds and 16 per centamong 25-44 year olds. The mortality rate due tosuicide among men is fourtimes the rate amongwomen.

The website states thata complex interplay of ge-netic, biological, personal-

ity and environmentalfactors causes mental ill-nesses. Almost one half(49 per cent) of those whofeel they have sufferedfrom depression or anxi-ety have never gone to seea doctor about this prob-lem.

Stigma or discrimina-tion attached to mentalillnesses presents a seri-ous barrier, not only to di-agnosis and treatmentbut also to acceptance inthe community.

It is estimated that 10-20 per cent of Canadianyouth are affected by amental illness or disorder– the single most dis-abling group of disordersworldwide.

Today, approximatelyfive per cent of male youthand 12 per cent of femaleyouth, age 12 to 19, haveexperienced a major de-

pressive episode. The total number of 12-

19 year olds in Canada atrisk for developing de-pression is a staggering3.2 million.

Once depression is rec-ognized, help can make adifference for 80 per centof people who are affected,

allowing them to get backto their regular activities.

Mental illness is in-creasingly threateningthe lives of our children;with Canada’s youth sui-cide rate the third highestin the industrializedworld.

Suicide is among theleading causes of death in15-24 year old Canadians, second only to accidents;4,000 people die prema-turely each year by sui-cide.

Schizophrenia is youth’sgreatest disabler as itstrikes most often in the16 to 30 year age group, affecting an estimated oneperson in 100.

Surpassed only by in-juries, mental disorders inyouth are ranked as thesecond highest hospitalcare expenditure inCanada.

Falling Tax RevenueRequires Fiscal Re-

straintSince our government

was elected,Saskatchewan is now ahave province with agrowing population that’sno longer dependent onequalization. Over thepast 9 years,Saskatchewan has grownand provided services tonearly 150,000 new resi-dents. That’s equivalentto adding another PrinceAlbert, Moose Jaw, York-ton, Swift Current, NorthBattleford, Lloydminster(SK side), Martensville,Humboldt, Melfort, andMeadow Lake. At a timewhen our economy isshowing signs of strength, lower than expectedpotash, uranium and con-tinued low oil prices havehit provincial revenueshard. The projected deficitfor 2016-17 is $806 mil-lion. To manage this, weare making significant re-straint measures, andworking to get the budgetback to balance. Sincecoming to office, our gov-ernment has paid off 1/3of the province’s operat-ing debt. As a result, in-terest costs are downfrom over $1 billion annu-ally in 1994-95 to $292million today. And wehave worked to build astrong financial footingfor Saskatchewan, whichincludes:

• AAA credit rating;• 2nd lowest debt to

GDP ratio among the

provinces;• $6 billion in tax relief

for families;• $9 billion in infra-

structure investment; and• 2nd best job creation

record in Canada.For comparison, Al-

berta’s population is nowonly roughly 4x that ofSaskatchewan’s but theyare running a deficitabout 11x larger thanSaskatchewan. We willmanage through thesechallenging times. We willwork hard to continueproviding necessary pro-grams and services, andprotect Saskatchewan’sfiscal position. thanks toa low debt burden and adiversified economy, wewill come through thischallenging time strongerthan ever.

Manufacturing SalesJump

Despite a downturn inglobal commodity prices,Saskatchewan’s economycontinues to show signs ofstrength. Saskatchewanleads all provinces inmanufacturing sales($14.1 billion in 2015),growing at more than fivetimes the national aver-age. Manufacturing is oneof the mainstays of theSaskatchewan economyand the impressive year-over-year growth is goodnews. Our provincialmanufacturers are inno-vative, competitive-minded and are meetingthe needs of global mar-kets with made-in-Saskatchewan solutions.Sectors that saw signifi-cant growth on a year-o v e r - y e a r ,seasonally-unadjustedbasis included food manu-facturing, machinerymanufacturing and woodproducts.

Wait Times for Sur-gery in Saskatchewan

Among Shortest inCanada

In Saskatchewan, we’reseeing how innovation –not ideology – brings bet-ter choices, better out-comes and lower costs. For example, publicly-funded private surgerieshave helped to take pres-sure off of the public sys-tem and have played akey role in reducing sur-gical wait times.

With grieving hearts, we aresadly announcing that ourmom, Nikki Maxine VeronicaSteven passed away on Dec. 14,2016, peacefully in her Calgaryhome with her family at herside.

Born on Jan.13,1944, the eld-est of the family of two born toSteve and Emily Romanchook(nee Skokan) of the Kolin Dis-trict, near Esterhazy. Mom grewup on the family farm and spenta great deal of time with hergrandparents, George and Vera

Skokan. She was blessed tohave a special bond with her fa-ther and spent many hours out-side helping him tend to hischores. Grades 1-8 were at-tended at Esterhauz; a oneroom school; followed by corre-spondence, then subsequentlygraduating at V.C.I. in VirdenMan. where she fondly treas-ured her time spent with herAuntie Dorothy and Big Daddy(Uncle Adolph). Mom loved herRiders and Toronto MapleLeafs, flowers and had manyamazing house plants. Her gar-dens were huge and she spentmany hours doing preservesand baking fresh for her family.Mom was known for her knit-ting, crocheting, needlepointand she had amazing talent as

a seamstress with her own fab-ric and craft store. She loved an-imals and nature, but had aspecial passion for dogs.

Grandma loved her grandkidsand enjoyed traveling to attendgames and special events. Sheenjoyed helping others and oneof her greatest accomplish-ments was her time spent vol-unteering on a woman’s crisishelp line. She took great pridein this. We will miss her quirkysense of humor, silly dances andunique outlook on life.

Mom fought a long coura-geous battle against cancer, sheleft content and surrounded inlove. Mom changed her name toSteven in honour of her father, whom she loved and profoundlymissed until he came to take

her home. Leaving to mourn her mem-

ory; her brother, Budd (Nadine)Romanchook (Esterhazy); herchildren, Sheldon (Kim) Yuzik(Calgary), Marci (John) Craven(Calgary), Mike (Cara) Yuzik(Watson), Leanne (Doug) Rogal-ski (Hudson Bay) and Lynnette(Ken) Drotar (Melfort); As wellas 11 grandchildren, eightgreat-grandchildren; numerousnieces and nephews; her roomieScott Henbrey and her mostbeloved “girl dog”; Skylar.

With colder tem-peratures now inSaskatchewan, theMinistry of Environ-ment is remindingpeople to check forsafe and sufficientice if you are ice fish-ing or enjoying otherwinter activities.

Ice thickness de-pends on the water-body and thesurrounding condi-tions. Ice does notfreeze at a uniformthickness and icestrength can vary

considerably fromone area to another.

It is important totest the ice thicknessbefore you travel onit. There should beat least 10 cm (4inches) of ice to walkon, 15 cm (6 inches)to drive a snowmo-bile or ATV on, 20cm (8 inches) todrive a car or lighttruck on, and 30 cm(12 inches) to drive aheavy truck on.

Any activity on icecomes with a risk.

The ice thickness isa guideline for indi-viduals to make adecision aboutwhether to ventureonto the ice.

Ice thickness alsocannot be the solemeasure of whetherit is safe to go on.Clear hard ice is theonly ice that is rec-ommended to travelon.

Avoid ice that:• is slushy in ap-

pearance;• has thawed then

froze again;• is near moving

water;• is layered,

caused by suddent e m p e r a t u r echanges; and hasstructures on it,such as pressureridges.
