1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of

real media products?

Forms and conventions used of real media products. FRONT COVER:

I used the convention of having a masthead on the left hand side of the cover. This makes it look more professional as not only is it the masthead, but it is also a logo for my magazine.

Having the artists name on the image is a convention as many Indie magazines do this. It allows the audience to know who the main subject of the magazine will be on.

I also used the convention of having a bar code. This makes the cover seem as if it is real as I have also included the price, issue and website for the magazine. I used the convention of having a pull quote

which is found in many Indie magazines. I done this as you would see a pull quote on Indie magazines.

Real media products from the Indie genre:

I added cover stories and cover lines as this is a convention that you find in magazines.

Another convention that I have used is a main image. One where the artist is smouldering as Indie magazines tend to look either serious or quite witty/fun.

Real media products from the Indie genre:

A convention that I used for my contents page is using my masthead on the contents page. This is a convention that I have used because looking at real media products for my genre, they have the masthead on the contents page.

I used the convention of putting what my magazine will include in categories so that the reader can find the pages easily.

Another convention that I used was page numbers. This is found in magazines so that it is easy for the reader to go to a certain page.

Another convention that I used was adding one main image to the page. As you can see, Indie magazines tend to have one main image that hasn’t been posed for.

Colour scheme of three colours is a convention as not many colours are used for this genre.

Another convention that I used was adding a subscription box which is found on contents pages. This allows the reader to know they can subscribe.

Double page spread:

Real media products from the Indie genre:

A convention that I used was having a main image on the page, either on the left or right.

A pull quote was used as this is always seen in an indie magazine. Either within the article or above it.

An article is always added and it’s either at the bottom, to the left or right. It is also in columns which you find in many magazines.

Another convention that was used was a page number and the magazines logo so the readers know what magazine they are reading.

An opening to the article which is found in the double page spreads of an Indie magazine.

Developing forms and conventions:

Front cover:

Real media products from the Indie genre:

I developed the masthead from being plain to having colour and making it look as if it stands out by adding black lines, white and a main colour of burgundy.

I developed the convention of having the artists name on the main image in black boxes. This is because the artists name isn’t usually put in black boxes on top of the image.

Developing forms and conventions: Real media products from the Indie genre:

Usually there isn’t a logo on the image of what the photo may be of. I developed this page by adding a logo of the band so that the audience can straight away see what the image is about.

Usually, in an Indie magazine there is a band index, but I decided not to add something like that as the page would be too over powering and most bands were included in the categories.

Developing forms and conventions: Real media products from the Indie genre:

I developed the idea of having a page number by the magazines logo. This is so that the reader doesn’t forget what magazine they are reading.

I developed the layout convention of a double page spread as I decided to place my main image on the right with the pull quote above the article.

Challenging forms and conventions:Front cover:

Real media products from the Indie genre:

I challenged the convention of having the cover lines and feature stories with lines underneath. This is because looking at music magazines for my genre, they do not usually put lines underneath cover lines and feature stories.

I challenged the convention of the artists name. This is because I put the artists name and the pull quote in black boxes and when I look at music magazines for my genre, they do not really do this.

Challenging forms and conventions: Real media products from the Indie genre:

I challenged the convention of how the categories are laid out. For example, my category boxes are very bold and in your face whereas other magazines there aren’t a lot of boxes.

Here, I challenged the colour scheme. I kept the same colour scheme from my cover, but I added a lot more black, especially black boxes and looking at other contents pages that belong to my music genre, you don’t really see this.

Challenging forms and conventions: Real media products from the Indie genre:

Double page spread:

Here, I feel as if I challenged the layout of the pull quote. This is because even though you may see a pull quote above the article, it is usually seen within the article.

Here, I have challenged the position of the image as well as the pose as you do not usually see this in Indie magazines. Here, I feel as if I

have challenged the layout of the article as it is underneath the pull quote., looking at Indie magazines, you would usually put the pull quote within the article.
