Dear Friends of EuNC, What is EuNC about? Could you mention the four terms that describe the uniqueness and distinctiveness of our college (don’t cheat by looking it up on our website!)? Don’t worry, this is not a test. This newsletter could be a good reminder of our character as a Nazarene school in Europe. As EuNC we want to invest in students so that their lives are transformed by Christ in a way that leads them to invest themselves in others (Bulgaria Graduation; Child Sponsorship). As a multinational college, EuNC is highly interested in the contextualisation of theologi- cal education and even more so the gospel (Portugal; Balkan). Belonging to a church with a Wesleyan-Holiness background, we also want to maintain and build relationships with other Wesleyan churches (European Festival) as well as learn more about the history of the Holiness movement and it’s implica- tions for today (book release). We are blessed to see where God is working in His kingdom - not only, but also, through EuNC. For most Christians, to speak about the Church (ecclesiology) is to speak about missiology (the participation in God’s mission). How-ever, speaking on those subjects in light of the book of Revelation’s content and message may not be straightforwardly seen. That was the topic of the 3rd edition of the Theological Conversations Day held in Lisbon, Portugal, on May 1. The event, sponsored by EuNC-Portugal Learn-ing Centre and the District Ministerial Studies Board, started in 2016 to create a time for shared reflection and interac-tion among the Nazarenes in Portugal – ministers (including pastors), ministerial students, church leaders and any other interested sisters and brothers from the local congregations.

The three papers that served as the basis for this year’s discussions were the ones on Ecclesiology presented at the 2014 Global Theology Conference in South Africa. This year we had the unique privi-lege of having Dr. Dean Flemming with us, as he was the author of the paper “Living Out the Future: Missional Ecclesi-ology in the Book of Revelation”.

Dr. Flemming was powerfully used by God to challenge and encourage the ap-proximate 75 participants to reflect and share in small groups about the Church’s identity and mission as revealed in Rev-elation. During the plenary time he an-swered questions that resulted from the group discussions about the subthemes: a) Church’s faithful witness, in both tell-ing and living Jesus’ story, and worship to the only true God; b) the practical mean-ing of “coming out of Babylon” for God’s people; and c) how the image of the New Jerusalem is to shape and equip God’s people for mission, as individuals and community. We are thankful for men of God like Dr. Flemming, who through words and living, points us the way and goes along with us. We pray and hope we can be faithful stewards of what we have received to serve God through others. To God be the glory!By Raquel Pereira (Portugal Nazarene Literature Coordinator)

Theological Conversations Day in Portugal:Living Out the Future

Faculty Accomplishments

Our rector, Dr. Klaus Arnold, has re-leased a new book: “Full and Present Salvation in Christ – Life and Work of Theodor Jellinghaus”. The book examines the leading theologian of the German Holiness Movement at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. The key event for the life and work of Jellinghaus was his participation in the conven-tion on Christian holiness in Eng-land in 1874. He wanted to bring the new insights he gained there to revive the Protestant and Pietist tra-ditions in the land of the Reforma-tion. Jellinghaus believed that the doctrine of sanctification by faith in Jesus Christ was an indispensa-ble consequence of and necessary accompaniment to a clear doctrine of justification. This book is the first comprehensive treatment of Jell-inghaus and assesses his theological system and personal involvement in and contribution to the develop-ment of the Holiness Movment in Germany and is available as soft-cover or e-book by the publisher or Amazon.

From April 10 to 12 EuNC had the opportunity to be part of “Conver-sations on Theological Education”, held in Osijek, Croatia. The event focused on Church and Mission in Balkan contexts, its trends, chal-lenges and needs. One of the greatest challenges in global theological education is to keep the conversation going between Churches and theologi-cal schools how institutions for theological education and pastoral formation could better serve (Evangelical) churches to be relevant witnesses in their contexts. This is also a challenge for the Balkan contexts (Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Macedonia, Albania, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Greece), espe-cially the countries of the former Yugoslavia.European Nazarene College was invited for two reasons: the innova-tive model that our institution represents in theological education and the multi-national character of our school that is very active in Eastern and Central Europe.

In addition, I had the privilege to represent EuNC by presenting a paper on “The Case of the European Nazarene College” in the section of innovative ways of doing theological education. It was a great confirmation to hear that theological educa-tors have heard of our model of the decentralization of EuNC and show great in-terest to study our model and consider the example for other institutions. It shows that EuNC has impact outside our denomination. European Council for Theological Education (former European Evangelical Ac-crediting Association , EEAA, now ECTE - in the process of becoming accredited by EQAR, European Quality Assurance Register) was also present. Their purpose is to “keep theological education relevant and sensitive to the needs of churches” and “cultivate a meaningful relationship with churches, denominations and evangeli-cal organizations that are based in Europe”. It was a blessing to be part of such a great group of theological educators from Germany and Austria all the way to Ukraine, and various countries in-between, representing various denominational or non-denominational institutions - each desiring to share and contribute to the discussion of trends, challenges and needs in Evangelical/Protestant theological education.By Mária Gusztinné Tulipán (Hungary Learning Centre Administrator)

Theological Education in Balkan Contexts

A Word from the Rector

A great blessing and joy in our min-istry is meeting alumni and learning what God is doing in their lives. At an event in Hamburg (Germany) Martina and I had the joy to meet four alumnis (see picture): Tanya (1999) and Davide Cantarella (2000) are serving as pioneer mis-sionaries for the Church of the Naza-rene after having served for many years in pastoral ministry, district leadership and in the area of educa-tion. Conny Link (2000) is a medical doc-tor, has been missionary in Africa and now works in a hospital in Ger-many. Claudia Hestermann (1999) is an ordained deacon, worked in a local church, and now serves in a Chris-tian school in Germany. It is wonderful to see how God has been working in and through them all over the world and to know that we had the privilege of walking parts of their way with them. These four people also exemplify what European Nazarene College is all about: making a difference through education. Please, pray for them and for your school and let us con-tinue to “stay in touch”!
