Perseverance is central to school success. Youth need to know that there is a future for them, there is hope, and the way that they fi nd their place is by staying in school, graduating, and earning a diploma or qualifi cation. school perseverance is, therefore, the best approach to encourage young people to pursue their studies and succeed.

during regional forums held by the Quebec government in september 2004, it became clear that the school dropout situation was a major concern in the estrie region. in the spring of 2005, the Table estrienne de concertation interordres en education (TECIÉ) was formed. the mandate the organization has given itself pertaining to this issue is to rally the estrie community to make a marked improvement in school success rates among estrie youth. its role in accomplishing this mandate involves infl uencing and rallying the people concerned, providing expertise and support, and networking.

the TECIÉ has a permanent team to implement its mobilization and action plan. partners for educational Success estrie (Projet PRÉE) implements the plan.

»a few facts in 2009, the Groupe d’action sur la persévérance et la réussite scolaires au Québec, in its report Savoir pour pouvoir: entreprendre un chantier national pour la persévérance scolaire, provided the following facts:

People who fail to graduate from high school earn average annual incomes below those who graduateswith as much as $439 000 in lost earnings by the end of their working life (in today’s dollar values).

Dropouts are more affected by unemployment, and represent the majority of people on social assistance.

They also form the core of the prison populationeeven though they are a minority in society overall.

Dropouts live shorter lives and are at higher risk for depression.

Dropouts generally participate less in society

and contribute less to the social fabric of Quebec.

There are many, complex causes of dropping out of school. numerous factors increase the probability that a young person will drop out of school. these factors can be related to the student’s:• personal environment (ex.: low educational and professional aspirations, low self-esteem, depression), • Family environment (ex.: low educational expectations, minimal parental supervision, frequent moving)• School environment (ex.: absenteeism, poor academic performance, poor teacher-student relationships) • Social environment (ex.: access to jobs requiring few qualifi cations, little value placed on education by the community, network of peer dropouts or peers who are no longer in school).

Reference: Savoir pour pouvoir: Entreprendre un chantier national pour la persévérance scolaire.

a decline in the dropout rate has been observed in the estrie region, as in

Quebec‘s 72 school boards. the gap between estrie and Quebec lessened

during the period observed.

in estrie, the graduation rate has been fl uctuating. although it is diffi cult to determine the cause, there may be diff erent explanations. a particular economic context or an issue specifi c to a school’s region, for example, can have a signifi cant impact regionally but have a negligible eff ect on Quebec as a whole.

How is the “exit without obtaining a diploma or a qualifi cation” (dropout rate) determined? 1-Among the students leaving, it is the percentage of those meeting the two following criteria:- they do not obtain either a diploma or a qualifi cation during the year under consideration;- they are not enrolled the following year in either general (youth or adult), vocational, or college education in any educational institution in Quebec.

10 FaCTOrS TO hElP YOung PEOPlE STaY in SChOOl :

We must encourage young people to graduate with a diploma or qualifi cation, whatever it may be!

We must especially encourage them to adopt the 10 approaches vital to school perseverance:

1. I enjoy learning 2. I add-up all

of all my achievements

4. I adopt a healthy lifestyle. 5.

I discover my

strengths

7. I choose my friends carefully.

6. I get involved in activities at my school

9. My studies

come fi rst,

then my job

10. I am responsible for my success

8. I trust the people who believe in me

3. I visualize my dreams

school perseverance is an ongoing challenge and hooked on school days represent a specifi c time during the year to strengthen mobilization and rally various sectors around our youth. this time of year is a decisive moment in the school year. some young peoples’ interest in school may decline after the christmas holidays and exams, before spring break and more exams.

these days involve talking about school perseverance, eff ort, risks of dropping out, and impact of dropping out on society, talking about the advantages of a diploma, talking about the future…. talking, but also taking action. hooked on school days are an occasion to encourage youth, congratulate them on their eff orts, and listen to them when it comes to their motivation and their perseverance. these days are also an ideal opportunity to create bonds that will support the success of our youth and young adults. this is why, this year, the vast majority of Quebec regions will host activities designed according to their specifi c situations and the rhythm of hooked on school days.1

Vidéo Réussir c’est chic! vidéo réussir c’est chic: grade 6 students of École primaire de l’arc-en-ciel from saint-françois-xavier de Brompton, created a dynamic video.

Below are some activity suggestions to help you take concrete action and highlight school perseve-rance during the hooked on school days and throughout the year. the suggestions are grouped based on whether they involve educational institutions (youth in elementary or high school / young adults in adult education, vocational education, cegeP, or university), community organizations, families, bu-sinesses, or municipalities.

Please note that many of these activities can be carried out in various settings, not only in the category in which they have been listed. Don’t hesitate to visit the www.jpsestrie.ca website to consult all the top picks from the 2011 hooked on School Days.

adapt existing activitiesadapt existing activities specifi cally for the hooked on school days. or, if you’ve planned a launch or awarding of special honours, scholarships, certifi cates, or trophies that highlight the importance of staying in school, why not do it during hooked on school days?

Hooked on school days Postcards congratulate, encourage, or thank a student, teacher, colleague, friend, or parent by giving him/her a hooked on school days postcard. start a perseverance chain by providing a few words of encourage-ment. create your own card by using the print and online versions of the cards, available on the Projet PRÉE’s hooked on school days website. all you have to do is choose from the three templates, the card that will appeal to the recipient and write a personal message.

Various ContestsPotential organizers: teachers, governing boards, parents, support staff, students’ councils

organize poster contests, question and answer games, writing contests on passions and dreams, drawing contests, crosswords, word searches, question of the day with answers deposited in boxes and prizes drawn.

“Le Corridor de la persévérance” at Saint-Camille school in Cookshire a drawing contest for all students was launched. each student had to complete the sentence “Being perseverant means…” and show what he/she meant through a drawing, using the medium of the student’s choice.

Art competition at Richmond Regional High School students were invited to paint a portrait, a positive image representing an aspect of school or education with the theme of school perseverance.

Other ideas: incorPorating the theme of Perseverance in various Pedagogical contexts: oral presentations, dictations, exams, writing, reading, research, etc.

artistic Project: comic strips, murals, songs, slogans, advertising, multimedia presentations, etc.

Squads focusing on the perseverance of boys Potential organizers: students, teachers, parents, support staff, youth counsellors

Bring together a small group of people focusing on boys who are having problems staying motivated or persevering. since not all boys experience difficulties in school – on the contrary, many of them succeed2 – why not encourage mutual help among boys. as an example, the “oldest” boys could become “mentors” for younger ones. or ask them to choose someone who is significant or positive in their minds, someone who inspires them.

“SLAM” video and CD on the school and the boys who attend it (Collège du Mont Sainte-Anne)after the first estrie regional slam event, the 10 winning students from collège du mont sainte-anne created a cd. the launch of this cd was the opening event for the start of hooked on school days.

2 Source: Jean-Claude St-Amant, (2007), Les garçons et l’école, Sisyphe contrepoint, 120 pages.3 Source: Nathalie Marceau, director of pedagogical services at Collège du Mont-Sainte-Anne.De quoi parlons-nous? The dropout rate of boys is calculated based on the number of boys leaving school and not the overall number of students leaving. The calculation for girls is identical.

“We have to learn to see their energy and not their restlessness, their activity and not their

insubordination. This is how we can build with boys an identity where success in school is compatible with

whom they fundamentally are.”3

in estrie, the general trend of a declining dropout rate is also observed among boys
