On 26 February 2020, Exide Technologies, LLC signed a
partnership agreement with the U.S. Army to joining its Partnership
for Youth Success (PaYS) program. The PaYSprogram is a strategic
partnership between the Army and a cross-section of private
industry, academia and state and local public institutes designed
to help Soldiers prepare for a career after the Army. The program
helps Soldiers make connections with prospective employers and
secure job interviews.
Exide signed the partnership agreement at a ceremony attended by
Captain Martin Ursitti, Company Commander, Atlanta Recruiting
Company; Lieutenant Commander Fredrick Parker, Battalion Commander,
Atlanta Recruiting Battalion; City of Milton, Ga., public
officials; and Exide Chief Executive Officer Tim Vargo and Chief
Operations Officer Mike Judd, a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Navy
and U.S. Army.
"We are honored and excited to be part of the U.S. Army’s
PaYSprogram and its mission of preparing our youth to make the
transition from Soldier to a future career," said Vargo. "Exide has
a long-standing commitment to hiring veterans, and this partnership
with the U.S. Army will help us reach more Soldiers and connect
them with resources to build their post-Army careers."
As part of the PaYS program, Exide will conduct job interviews
with qualified Soldiers and consider them for full-time positions.
Exide will also participate in U.S. Army events and recruiting
functions.
"As a veteran myself, I can tell you that there's nothing more
rewarding than supporting others who have served our country," said
Judd. "It's a win-win for companies who are getting employees with
a strong sense of discipline and work ethic and who have numerous
skills to bring to the workforce.“
A global company with its headquarters in Milton, Ga., Exide has
numerous locations across the U.S. that produce battery and energy
storage systems and specialty applications that power everything
from cars and trucks to forklifts and heavy-duty equipment to
marine vehicles, locomotives and more. For more than 100 years,

HIRE Vets Medallion Program
By: Randall Smith, HIRE Vets Medallion Program Director
In these challenging times, transitioning servicemembers and
veterans are still faced with finding jobs and crossing the hurdle
of entering into meaningful careers with promising future
prospects. To help connect veterans with employers focused on
providing careers, the Department of Labor (DOL) has implemented
the Honoring Investments in Recruiting and Employing American
Military Veterans (HIRE Vets) Act. The HIRE Vets Medallion Award
recognizes employers that are committed not just to hiring
veterans, but retaining them in meaningful, family-sustaining
careers.
In 2019 DOL recognized over 400 large, medium, and small
employers that earned the Hire Vets Medallion Award, after
recognizing over 200
employers in 2018. The companies came from 48 states, plus
Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, and collectively they
hired more than 52,000 veterans.
What sets HIRE Vets Medallion Award recipients apart is that
they understand the challenges that veterans face when entering
theworkforce, how to address them, and how to help veterans
succeed.
There are many veteran employment-related awards, lists, and
rankings. The sheer diversity of organizations and criteria can
make it overwhelming for veterans (and others) to differentiate
between the employers committed to providing jobs and the employers
committed to providing meaningful, long-term careers. The HIRE Vets
Medallion Award is the only federal veterans' employment award that
recognizes and honors employers' commitment to veteran hiring,
retention, and professional development - and it carries the full
weight of the federal government.
Second, veterans often transition out of their first,
post-service jobs in order to look for better opportunities, as
non-veterans also do. On the whole, hiring veterans receives far
greater attention than retaining and training veterans to position
them for long-termprosperity, and the long-term is key. The HIRE
Vets Medallion Award Program recognizes the employers that are
focused on this long-term goal, who invest in integrating newly
hired veterans through providing leadership opportunities, veteran
resource (affinity) groups, professional development, and training,
among others.

HIRE Vets Medallion Program(continued)
For example, the companies recognized by the HIRE Vets Medallion
Award Program focused on helping their veterans succeed in myriad
ways:
•They have veterans on staff to help new employees become more
well-rounded leaders in the company and their community
•They group employees into small teams, giving their veterans
the chance to take full advantage of the small unit leadership
skills they learned in the military
•They work to ease the transition from military to civilian life
by providing a structured work environment that also focuses on the
comradery service members love
•They help their veterans set specific career goals and plans
and identify training opportunities to achieve those goals
There are also a number of resources for service members to help
them navigate their transition to civilian careers. DOL partners
with agencies and programs, such as the VA and Department of
Defense, to ensure transitioning service members and veterans have
access to world-class resources that support their skill sets.
DOL's Veterans' Employment and Training Service (VETS) offers
access to both employer and future employee resources such as
American Job Centers and Employment and Vocational Training Track
workshops for transitioning servicemembers. Now, with the HIRE Vets
Medallion Award Program, DOL can provide these resources while
helping veterans more easily identify employers dedicated to
furthering their careers. One way to do that is by visiting the
newly added Awardee page at HIREVets.gov, which allows recipients
to add a hyperlink to the map listing and allows potential
employees to find them at HIREVets.gov/Awardees.
The HIRE Vets Medallion Award Program isn't just about hiring -
it's about veteran careers. The 2020 HIRE Vets Medallion Award
application period is open to employers through April 30, 2020.
Visit HIREVets.gov to learn more about the 2020 program,
requirements, and to see the 2019 and 2018 HIRE Vets Medallion
Award recipients.

Prescott, AZ Resident becomes Region's First Female Infantry
Recruit
At the age of 29, Sarah Dugan had yet to find a true path.
Married with two children, her ambitions had not been fully
realized. This caused her to question her future - time was running
out to find a purpose and make her mark in life.
Then in November 2019, she received a phone call from Prescott
Recruiting Station, asking her if she would be interested in
opportunities with the U.S. Army. Dugan said she was. Just three
months later she had enlisted in the Army, signing up to become an
infantryman and attend Airborne School, the first female in
Northern Arizona to select the 11B Military Occupational Specialty.
"Everything about the infantry appeals to me...the history behind
it, the teamwork, but most of all the challenge," Duggan continued,
"I know it will push me, but I'm making sure I'm prepared."
With a ship date of March 23rd to Basic Combat Training at Fort
Benning, Ga., Dugan said she is getting nervous anticipating the 22
week course, but receiving lots of support from her family.
The Army PaYS Program wishes Sarah Dugan the best of luck in
training and a successful career as an 11B Infantry Recruit.
Congratulations to the Phoenix Recruiting Battalion on being
selected as the Army PaYS Battalion of the Month. We thank you for
your support and look forward to more great stories from the
battalion.

New York Army National Guard troops were deployed to a Health
Department Command Post in New Rochelle, NY in an effort to contain
a one-mile radius in that community considered to be a "cluster"
centered on an area where the first cases of the coronavirus had
been discovered. The troops, have been assisting with cleaning
public facilities and delivering food to people quarantined in
their residences.
At the time of deployment, there were already over 120 positive
cases in the small city of about 80,000, five miles north of New
York City's border. Though the city is not under quarantine, the
"containment zone" will be enforced for at least 14 days.
Ultimately, this will be largely determined by the
increase/decrease of active cases of the virus.

On March 7, 2020, Army PaYS Marketer, Corin-Manning Gillens Sr.
accomplished a dream that began 32 years ago as a freshman at South
Carolina State College, now South Carolina State University. Corin
attended a step show during 1987 homecoming with his cousin Henry
Marshall. He watched his cousin Henry perform in the step show with
his fraternity brothers and win first place. An impressed Corin
inquired about how to become a member of his fraternity Kappa Alpha
Psi Fraternity, Incorporated (ΚΑΨ). His cousin Henry told him he
had to at least a sophomore with a minimum grade point average of
2.5 to apply.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated (ΚΑΨ) is a historically
African-American collegiate Greek-letter fraternity. Since the
fraternity's founding on January 5, 1911 at Indiana University
Bloomington, the fraternity has never limited membership based on
color, creed or national origin. The fraternity has over 160,000
members with 721 undergraduate and alumni chapters in every state
of the United States, and

international chapters in the United Kingdom, Germany, South
Korea, Japan, United States Virgin Islands, Nigeria, South Africa,
and The Bahamas.
Learning more about the fraternity, Corin knew he would do
whatever was necessary to become a member of the fraternity. The
following year, Corin became eligible and completed his
application; ready to walk in the footsteps of his father and
several cousins. Just before the announcement was made that he
would be accepted to pledge in the Fall '89 line of the Alpha
Lambda Chapter ofKappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Corin discovered
that his girlfriend was pregnant with their first child. As a
result, Corin's entire life would change as he prepared for
parenthood.
As a Soldier, Corin traveled the world. In addition to his first
child, Corin Jr., he had a daughter, Kahrin Lula-Michelle Gillens.
He also earned his Bachelor's Degree and deployed overseas. Despite
these accomplishments, Corin still had dreams of becoming a member
of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
After 26 years of service to our nation and sending two children
off to college, Corin felt it was time to do the things in life he
always wanted to do. On January 26, 2019, he began the process of
becoming a member of what Corin says is "the best fraternity in the
world" which is Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. A little over a
year later, his dream became a reality! Corin states, "I realized I
had a 32-year dream. I tell this story not to speak of my
achievement, but to encourage anyone who may read this that it is
never too late to realize a dream. As my father always says about
the "Greatest Fraternity in the world", Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc. (ΚΑΨ)
"It is never too late to be Great!"
Good father-daughter relationships are incredibly important for
young girls, especially those transitioning into adulthood. PaYS
Senior Marketer, Antonio Johnson was having a conversation with his
21-year-old daughter, Tyra, about the importance of leadership; and
that is when he came up with the perfect idea and said to his
daughter, "We should visit a Toastmasters meeting." After some
hesitation, Tyra agreed and the plan was set in motion.
Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational
organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills
through a worldwide network of clubs. Headquartered in Englewood,
CO, the organization's membership exceeds 358,000 in more than
16,800 clubs in 143 countries. Since 1924, Toastmasters
International has helped people from diverse backgrounds become
more confident speakers, communicators, and leaders.

A member of South Carolina State College's Reserve Officers
Training Corp (ROTC), Corin had every intention of becoming a
career Army Officer. However, due to the circumstances of
fatherhood, Corin felt it would be better to leave school and
enlist in the Army so that he could provide for his new family.
Coring enlisted at the advanced rank of Private First Class because
of his college credits and Army ROTC experience.

Antonio joined Toastmasters International in 2014 while still
serving in the U.S. Army. "I saw Toastmasters as a great networking
opportunity." However, military retirement and transition to the
civilian workforce made it difficult to attend the bi-monthly
meetings. As a result, Antonio became an inactive member. Tyra is
currently a third year Business Major at Liberty University who has
yet to decide a career path after graduation in May 2021.
Nonetheless, leadership is a strong attribute for Tyra; having been
captain of her high school's varsity cheerleading team while also
serving as the Senior Master Chief of the Navy JROTC program.
On a Tuesday evening in Fredericksburg, VA, the father-daughter
team headed out to their first Toastmasters meeting as guests and
both volunteered to speak that night. Tyra was voted "best speaker"
in an impromptu speech category. Since then, Antonio and Tyra have
become members of the local Toastmasters chapter and look forward
to spending that quality time together every first and third
Tuesday of the month. Antonio states, "Daughters need their fathers
to be good role models who lead by example and that's what I strive
for with her as well as her siblings. Parenting becomes very
complex when a child reaches adulthood but we owe it to them to
figure it out because that's when they really need us."
