July 2020 | Tidings 1 Coming Together AgainWe hear your longing to return to in-person worship. We long for that, too. To see your faces and hear your voices and joke and cry and hug and share peace. And we know that much of that is not yet possible. Yet, we are working to create a way in which we can once again worship as a commu- nity as much as possible. Mike Rapp has assured us that the virus is manageable, as long as we consistently pracce safety protocols offered up by the medical community. That being said, we also know that there are vari- ous technological and logiscal elements we want to put into place and somewhat perfect before we embrace these new ways of being. So, below is our very fluid and tentave meline of what we hope to offer in the near future. Please know that these are subject to change as things shiſt in our community. We intend to finish the Unraveledsermon series with the pre-recorded services, as weve been doing. This will be come to compleon on July 19th. We hope to roll out a Sunday morning Parking Lot service beginning July 26th at 9am. We want to give people the opon to bring their own chairs and sit (separated) in our lot. Well lead from outside the building with a speaker but will also offer FM transmission for those who are more comfortable within their cars. For those who remain at home, we will sll record and upload the services on YouTube. The final details for that are sll being worked out. Being outside and properly separated, we expect to be able to sing hymns and will provide hymnals in a way simi- lar to the Hymn Fest we had earlier in June. As long as community numbers remain low, we plan to resume in-person inside worship begin- ning Labor Day weekend, September 6. We are unsure yet whether to offer one or two morning services and whether to offer and evening service (Saturday or Sunday?). We will need to take reservaons to help us determine such details. In addion, ALL parcipants will be required to wear masks (some will be available if parcipants didnt bring their own). There will be clearly marked entrance doors and exit doors. As you enter the Sanctuary, you can pick up a bullen and sanized hymnal and leave it on a different cart as you exit. There will be no singing, and an offering plate will be located at the exit, though online giving connues to be encouraged. Seang will be marked off and possibly assigned (according to size of family). Those unable to follow these protocols will be invited to worship in their cars or at home. We will connue to broadcast the service via FM radio, as well as YouTube. We are sll new at some of the technology necessary to accommodate all of these forms of worship, so please be paent with us as we work out some of the bugs. In addion, we are aware that a surge in virus cases is expected in the fall, which may put us back to where we are right now—recorded services only. As I said, this is a fluid plan, and we are trying to roll with the situaon. We are in deep gratude to Ethan Jensen who has been our technology guru, eding our videos and helping us with various tech concerns. Well be looking to him quite a bit for a while, so make sure to thank him. One thing we are sll unsure of is communion. We are working out ways in which to offer it without pung anyone at risk. One challenge we may run into is volunteers. With many of our older volun- teers feeling at risk in person, we must rely on younger individuals and families to help us accom- plish our goals. With communion, we will at the very least need help seng up (individual cups) and cleaning up. We will need people to help sanize pews and hymnals and doors, etc. If we cant get the help we need, we may need to return to recorded services. Pastor Tobi White

The Quest Inside for Uniting Spirit (Q.I. for U.S.)

Daily Spiritual Practice: Lection Divina

[ The Parable of the Sower Explained ] “Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.” Luke 8:11

In preparation for returning to the building, some of our Feast partners are preparing to co-lead different Lectio Divina (or Divine Reading) classes. The goal is to offer three options to our Feast partners, OSLC members, and guests. These three classes will be on Sunday’s from 1:00-1:45pm for about eight weeks. Andrew will lead a Visio Divina class using the stained glass windows in the sanctuary; Cathy will lead a traditional Lectio Divina class; and, Rosa will lead an Audio Divina class. That is, if all goes well with this pandemic.

If you are interested in one of these classes, we are looking for co-leaders for the Lectio Divina and Audio Divina class. I ask that you give it some thought and prayer. Knowing how excited Cathy and Rosa are to get these classes going, you will be blessed by this opportunity. Don’t know anything about Lectio or Audio Divina? Not to worry - there isn’t much to learn and the Spirit will be there to support you! (And I will too!)

Or maybe you’ll consider participating in one of these classes. To help you decide which one to join, I am highlighting each of the three classes this summer.

Lectio Divina uses short texts from the bible. Cathy is still working on what texts to use; or, she might let the Holy Spirit guide the verses each week. Using the selected passage, after each reading, you might be asked the following questions:

What word or phrase catches my attention? What does this word or phrase say to me about my life? Where am I in this word or phrase? Is something being said

specifically to me? What do I feel? What is my response to this word or phrase? Tell God the feeling as fully and honestly as I can. Yield to the word or phrase. Rest in God’s presence, without analyzing or thinking. Resting and released, listen to God. What does God call me to do? What word do I want to keep in mind, so I can turn to it throughout the day?

My prayer this month is that the word fills you with God’s love and grace. Amen.

“Coming Together Again”

We hear your longing to return to in-person worship. We long for that, too. To see your faces and hear your voices and joke and cry and hug and share peace. And we know that much of that is not yet possible. Yet, we are working to create a way in which we can once again worship as a commu-nity as much as possible.

Mike Rapp has assured us that the virus is manageable, as long as we consistently practice safety protocols offered up by the medical community. So, below is our very fluid and tentative timeline of what we hope to offer in the near future. Please know that these are subject to change as things shift in our community.

We intend to finish the ‘Unraveled’ sermon series with the pre-recorded services, as we’ve been doing. This will be come to completion on July 19th.

We are unsure yet whether to offer one or two morning services and whether to offer and evening service (Saturday or Sunday?). We will need to take reservations to help us determine such details. In addition, ALL participants will be required to wear masks (some will be available if participants didn’t bring their own). There will be clearly marked entrance doors and exit doors. As you enter the Sanctuary, you can pick up a bulletin and sanitized hymnal and leave it on a different cart as you exit. There will be no singing, and an offering plate will be located at the exit, though online giving continues to be encouraged. Seating will be marked off and possibly assigned (according to size of family). Those unable to follow these protocols will be invited to worship in their cars or at home. We will continue to broadcast the service via FM radio, as well as YouTube.

We are still new at some of the technology necessary to accommodate all of these forms of worship, so please be patient with us as we work out some of the bugs. In addition, we are aware that a surge in virus cases is expected in the fall, which may put us back to where we are right now—recorded services only. OSLC Food Philosophy Food is a gift of God’s grace that

brings us together for the growth and nourishment of body, soul, and com-

munity.

Let America be America again. Let it be the dream it used to be. Let it be the pioneer on the plain Seeking a home where he himself is free. (America never was America to me.) Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed— Let it be that great strong land of love Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme That any man be crushed by one above. (It never was America to me.) O, let my land be a land where Liberty Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath, But opportunity is real, and life is free, Equality is in the air we breathe. (There's never been equality for me, Nor freedom in this "homeland of the free.") Say, who are you that mumbles in the dark? And who are you that draws your veil across the stars? I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart, I am the Negro bearing slavery's scars. I am the red man driven from the land, I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek— And finding only the same old stupid plan Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak. I am the young man, full of strength and hope, Tangled in that ancient endless chain Of profit, power, gain, of grab the land! Of grab the gold! Of grab the ways of satisfying need! Of work the men! Of take the pay! Of owning everything for one's own greed! I am the farmer, bondsman to the soil. I am the worker sold to the machine. I am the Negro, servant to you all. I am the people, humble, hungry, mean— Hungry yet today despite the dream. Beaten yet today—O, Pioneers! I am the man who never got ahead, The poorest worker bartered through the years. Yet I'm the one who dreamt our basic dream In the Old World while still a serf of kings, Who dreamt a dream so strong, so brave, so true, That even yet its mighty daring sings In every brick and stone, in every furrow turned

That's made America the land it has become. O, I'm the man who sailed those early seas In search of what I meant to be my home— For I'm the one who left dark Ireland's shore, And Poland's plain, and England's grassy lea, And torn from Black Africa's strand I came To build a "homeland of the free." The free? Who said the free? Not me? Surely not me? The millions on relief today? The millions shot down when we strike? The millions who have nothing for our pay? For all the dreams we've dreamed And all the songs we've sung And all the hopes we've held And all the flags we've hung, The millions who have nothing for our pay— Except the dream that's almost dead today. O, let America be America again— The land that never has been yet— And yet must be—the land where every man is free. The land that's mine—the poor man's, Indian's, Negro's, ME— Who made America, Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain, Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain, Must bring back our mighty dream again. Sure, call me any ugly name you choose— The steel of freedom does not stain. From those who live like leeches on the people's lives, We must take back our land again, America! O, yes, I say it plain, America never was America to me, And yet I swear this oath— America will be! Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death, The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies, We, the people, must redeem The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers. The mountains and the endless plain— All, all the stretch of these great green states— And make America again!
