When you wake up in the morning what is the first thing you do? Read the paper? Get a cup of coffee? Chat with your family? The gift shop at Providence Mount St. Vincent is where this happens for residents on a daily basis. It is a gathering place, full of love and community, yet it is in need of some help.

The refrigerator that held cold food for sale is out of commission and was loud and disruptive to anyone in the gift shop. In addition to no longer functioning properly, the noise made it challenging for residents to have conversation and hear the people they were visiting with — a key reason for spending time there.

Lynne Vertner, who works in the gift shop, further explains “The gift shop is a gathering place for residents. They host their families here when they come to visit and build friendships with other residents and staff who gather here every day.”

Temporary, small refrigerators have been placed in the gift shop, yet they aren’t accessible for residents to easily reach items, and have very limited capacity. Further challenging accessibility, the tables and chairs take up too much space — making it particularly difficult for those residents utilizing wheelchairs to navigate.

Spreading the mission of The Mount, “As expressions of God’s healing love, witnessed through the ministry of Jesus, we are steadfast in serving all, especially those who are poor and vulnerable,” is truly an honor as PMSV Foundation Board President. I have witnessed this compassionate care and support since the 1970s when my maternal grandparents lived at the Mount and later when my aunt, a Dominican nun, lived her last years at St. Joseph’s Residence.

Most recently I experienced the kind caregivers of the Mount during my mom’s four years in nursing care. The spiritual dimension of the Mount also provided tremendous comfort

to her. Even while bedridden for two years, we participated in Mass many Saturday afternoons via the television in her room and the dedicated chaplains who brought communion.

The other element that creates a special community at The Mount is the intergenerational approach provided by the on-site day care center for 125 children. Every day the children and residents interact doing art, service projects, playing music, chatting and reading stories.

Your support for charitable care and the wonderful life fund that enriches residents’ lives every day, truly makes a difference. Thank you all for your amazing support in 2018!

For the third year in a row, a team of close to 40 from Deloitte, arrived at The Mount with festive holiday sweaters and a generous spirit, ready to help with our Holiday Open House. Each year, our amazing dining services team orchestrates this event, with a white tablecloth dinner served in every neighborhood. But it couldn’t be executed without volunteers.

So once again, the Deloitte volunteers came in and carved meat, served dinner, escorted residents to performances in the Chapel, and most importantly, visited with residents and helped them celebrate the season. This event is a highlight of the year for all involved and we are so grateful for Deloitte’s continued support!

Each year The Mount is fortunate to have groups from Deloitte, Microsoft, Nucor Steel and others to help with a variety of activities. If you work for a company that would like to get a group together to volunteer at The Mount, please contact Storey Squires at [email protected].

Also, save the date for our 2019 Holiday Open House — December 12th!

From Our Board President

Thank you to Deloitte!

Meg Lucia, Foundation Board President

Members of the Deloitte team spread extra holiday cheer with their festive sweaters!

In December of 2018 the Providence Mount St. Vincent Foundation launched the Intergenerational Giving Circle, a program to support intergenerational programming at The Mount. Each year the Foundation funds nearly $100,000 to fund intergenerational art and music programs, service projects and an extra teacher in each classroom to make it possible for the children to visit the Mount’s neighborhoods. These programs not only support the very special relationships between the children and the residents, they foster joy and magic for all! And they would not be possible without the generosity of donors.

Photos, right: Founding Members were honored at the first annual President’s dinner in February at The Rainier Club featuring keynote speaker Marc Freedman, CEO and Founder of Encore.org and author of “How to Live Forever.” It was a lovely evening, full of community, gratitude, and excitement for the future.

Founding Members of the Intergenerational Giving Circle contributed $1,000 or more to support Intergenerational Programming at The Mount.

This is just the first year of the program and we look forward to growing the Intergenerational Giving Circle for years to come as the generations continue to truly unite at The Mount. To join The Intergenerational Giving Circle, or learn more, please contact Molly Swain at 206-938-8994 or [email protected].

In 2018, the Providence Mount St. Vincent Foundation launched a special way to honor families at The Mount—the Family Honor Roll.

This recognition level was created for people to honor their family’s appreciation for and commitment to The Mount, whatever their connection may be. Current and former Resident families, Mount staff,

Mount Board Members and other friends of The Mount all made up this inaugural Honor Roll.

With a $1,000 contribution level each family name was shared during the Honor Roll at Black Tie Bingo for everyone to celebrate and recognize.

A New Way to Honor Your Family at The Mount

We are so grateful to these families for choosing to honor their loved one in this way.

Each year through generous donors like those who participated in the Honor Roll, the Foundation provides over $1 million to support charitable care and wonderful life programming for our aging residents and patients, many of whom have outlived their financial resources.

This need increases every year and we rely on the generosity of donors to meet this need. If your family is grateful for your connection to The Mount, or if you are new to this community and want to make a difference, consider pledging your commitment to The Mount by joining the Family Honor Roll. To join today, or learn more, please contact Molly Swain at 206-938-8994 or [email protected].

Volunteers and iPads in the Intergenerational Art Class Without the help of Providence Mount St. Vincent’s volunteer community, many of our wonderful programs, including the Art Class, would look a lot different. Volunteers help the children and adults connect in a host of ways. They accompany individual residents to and from class; they distribute materials and help with clean-up; they sit beside participants, sharing stories and jokes and the occasional tear. This sharing is not trivial as one resident shared; “I had a bad night last night. I am telling you this because I came in to art class and painted and forgot all about my pain.” The art class volunteers seem to know when to step in and when to step back. They seem ready for any challenge.

Recently the art class volunteers took on a new challenge. A research team requested to observe art classes in which iPads were offered as one of many resources that Art Instructor Bridget Daly provides for art making. Through flexibility and learning together, the entire class began using the iPads a few years ago to fuel their own creativity. They accessed images of works of art from the Internet and photographed their own artwork to store in digital portfolios which could be revisited and shared with others. They even learned to use apps in the art making process! These benefits of having the iPads in class were made possible through the assistance of the art class volunteers. With Bridget’s help, volunteers learned how to take photographs with the iPads and they taught the participants to do the same. They spoke with the participants about their work and helped them to type or upload descriptions to accompany photos. They made videos of participants talking about their art which was often intensely meaningful. One volunteer recently noted, “It is amazing to witness everyone in art class communicating about their lives through their art and to see how everyone, participants and volunteers alike, support each other in doing.”

Programs like the art class are possible because of generous donors from our community. If you would like to donate to this program go to www.providence.org/themountdonatenow.

Lobby Sales Build Community and Raise Crucial FundsWhen Chris Mesaros started volunteering at Providence Mount St. Vincent, she had no idea that she would go on to found The Mount’s beloved cabinet sales, a biannual sale of jewelry and other decorative items. She simply wanted to continue building friendships with the residents who she met during her mother’s time at The Mount.

The sales are a true community event. Chris consciously creates an atmosphere where everyone, from residents to guests to employees, can relax and spend time together. She says, “The residents are there at cabinet sales not to shop but to be here. I bring music, a place to sit and visit, it makes it like home … that’s why I do what I do.”

Raising almost $1,700 in its first year, the cabinet sales have only become more popular. Chris’ last sale brought in nearly $12,000. Every penny from the sales goes to The Mount’s Foundation in support of resident programs and uncompensated care.

The next Lobby Cabinet Sale starts November 4th and Chris is looking for contributions of costume jewelry and treasured collectibles. If you have anything you are willing to part with, please bring it to the Foundation office at The Mount. Generous donations from people like you make this sale possible!

Dyke R. Turner Courtyard Naming Honors Intergenerational Legacy

On Aug. 16, 2018, The Mount dedicated its outdoor courtyard to Dyke R. Turner, the architect whose passion and vision helped bring The Mount’s Intergenerational

Learning Center (ILC) to life.

“Dyke had an amazing vision for what this could be — a place where children and elders came together to play, sing, dance, work on projects, enjoy each other’s company and learn from each other,” said Charlene Boyd, Administrator of Providence Mount St. Vincent. “Without Dyke’s vision and perseverance, I’m not sure our world-renowned childcare center would be what it is today.”

Turner, who died in December 2016, was one of the key visionaries behind The Mount’s effort to bring children and seniors together in a building that is licensed both as a childcare center and a nursing home. He not only grasped the concept but did the research and had the vision to make it happen.

Prior to the dedication, Dyke’s wife Diane, as well as friends, family and Mount staff gathered to watch The Growing Season, a documentary filmed at The Mount about the intergenerational programming. It was a meaningful evening for everyone involved to gather in the space Dyke designed knowing that it would benefit children for years to come.
