OFF AGAINWell, at last we’re on the road again to another wekend of dance, first overnight stop, Grenfell to meet Colin & Heather then off again with the next overnight stop being Gunnedah, and then we were there, yes, lovely Tweed Heads with delightful weather, no -6 degree temperatures up there. This is the third trip to Tweed Heads to enjoy the company of other dancers from the Eastern states including those from New Zealand who always make the effort toattend this wonderful weekend. Although the official extent of the event was heldover the weekend there were many other dances one could attend and for thosefortunate enough to call into Twin Towns on the Tuesday before had the pleasure of dancing and or just listening to music from the 30’s with Les Wilsons twelve pieceSwing Force Big Band of which Tony Gilbert is a member.Wednesday seemed to be a free day so there was plenty of shopping and familiarising ourselves with the area, one shop that was popular with dancers is My Juju selling retro and Rock ‘n’ Roll clothing with dance shoes for most styles of dance. All at reasonable prices, we donated to their cause greatly along with many others.
Thursday saw us attending once again Twin Towns Club for afternoon teas and drinks with more danc-ing to the music of Patti & Tony for the afternoon, and for those enthusiastic enough we were at it again that evening at the Twin Towns Club Benora for more foot punishing exercise dancing to Patti’s music and all at no cost.Friday saw the first of the workshops conducted by Andrea & John Barwick A&J’s Love to Dance (Corowa) along with Maureen & Gary Coppock from Dance Magic (Brisbane)
After welcoming everybody to the weekend and introductions of the main princi-ples of the weekend it was straight into it with Andrea & John intoducing their newlychoreographed Tango of which we will see more of at the Corowa Festival of Dance. A brilliantly choreographed dance and a delight to perform it was embraced by all dancers. Maureen & Gary Copock followed with their new dance, a Saunter titled Rainbow Saunter equally as interesting as A&J’s Tango, very well constructed and well accepted by all, by the end of the session most everyone had a good understanding of both dances. Although the venue was changed at the last moment (due to renovations at the community Centre not being finished) to the South Tweed Sports Club it did not distract from the weekend and the Club’s staff went out of their way to ensure that we were all well catered for, the floor was excellent for dancing and the venue comfortable, suppers were light yet satisfying.Friday night saw us attend for the first of the organised dances with around 160 people dancing to the sounds of the Tony Gilbert Sound, both new dances were performed during the evening and to everyones credit they were well remembered and danced, a testimony to the simplicity and flowing construction of both dances.Another workshop followed Saturday morning when the new dances were once again practiced and refined, the club also provided fresh fruit for dancers during the morning. Anthony Pepers, dance adjudicator and principle of Intencity Dance Academy (Wanga-tatta) gave an informative, and sometimes humorous presentation on how to get more enjoyment out of dancing. The big night “A Night At The Oscars” started on time with the introduction of the new and exciting, fully ‘Symphonic’ orchestrated sound of the Tony Gilbert Sound, with a rendition of the theme from Rocky, and, while not part of the dance programe as such people were dancing and enjoying the vibrancy of the new sound which continued throughout the evening, prizes provided by the Rutherglen Dance Festival & LRE Dance (Rutherglen wine of course) were presented during the evening, along with awards for “The Oscars”, four of which were presented to Gary Coppock, (being disruptive)John Barwick, (dancing latin on the second beat) Russell Edwards (dancing against doctors orders) and a surprise one for Tony Gilbert, (for his brilliance in arranging the music)One of the highlights of the evening was a dance presentation by Queensland Dance Professionals Rebecca & Peter Beardsley, Principals of Orchard’s Dance Studio, Fortitude Valley who danced a Slow Foxtrot and delighted those present with their poise and brilliant dance style. The evening finishing with everyone on a high.Of course that wasn’t the end of the weekend for some with an after dance dinner, a dance cruise reunion and Monday night dancing with Mark Wilson and yes, another dance with Maureen & Gary at Eagleby a week later, think it’s time to travel south to the cold, hm not sure about that.

Norfolk Island 21 Years of DancingComing of Age with 21 Years of Social Ballroom DancingAn incredible week of social ballroom dancing has come to a close for 87 visiting dancers taking part in the 21st. Norfolk Island Social Ballroom Dancing Week. The Norfolk Island Social Ballroom Dancing Committee once again organised a wonderful week full of ballroom dancing, socialising and delicious meals. And once again they welcomed back a number of dancers who year after year return for this event and in doing so become firm friends. With dancers attending from both Australia & New Zealnd this week annually unites dancing friends across the Tasman as they ‘meet in the middle’ on Norfolk Island.Over seven workshops the dancers learnt new dances with tutors Jan Lawrence and Tanya Kershaw who as ever brought theirincredible enthusiasm, teaching skill and fun to the week. This year for the Themed Dinner Dance was ‘Magical And Mystical’ and the costumes of the dancers were incredible - from Medusa and Thor, to Leprecauns, fairies, wizards and so much more!Congratulations to the Best Dressed winners. What fun! At the Farewell Supper Ball all were formally dressed and Waltzed,Tangoed, Cha Cha’ed, Rumbered and danced the night away. Our local young dancers Cha Cha was an absolute bonus highlight. A Recovery Dance held on the last night provided a final opportunity to dance together, but this time in an easy , relaxed and casual way. From all the team at the Norfolk Island Travel Centre our great thanks to Peter Wallace for providing a complete copy of hisphotos from the week (including the ones shown here) and we wish all this year’s visiting dancers a safe journey home. It has been such a pleasure to welcome everyone to this 21st. anniversary year of Social Ballroom Dancing on Norfolk Island - and we look forwardto seeing you once again back for even more dancing!Story courtesy of Alison Christian - The Norfolk ISLANDERCommunity Newspaper

Open to the imagination, maybe a far-awayexotic fantasy (Arabian nights), maybe it’s sport, science fiction, fancy dress or regal tiara. We can’t wait to check out all the terrific ideas!!! The BIG news, that we are very excited about, is that we haveadded a second workshop on Friday 29th September at 10am runby Anthony Pepers, entry will be gold coin for festival ticket holders and $5 for anyone else. Anthony is a qualified danceteacher and competition judge, we are very fortunate to haveAnthony participating in this year’s festival. John and Andrea Barwick will feature on the Sunday workshop, they have a comprehensive workshop planned, featuring their latest choreography. As always this is a festival event that is NOT to be missed, guaranteed fun and a NEW dance. Russell & Lesley Edwards (aka LRE Dance) are playing the music at the Saturday Casual Dance at the RSL Club, which will be theperfect prelude to the AFL Grand Final and the Festival Ball!! Once again we’ll be enjoying a meal at the Corowa ChocolateFactory (own cost), and for the first time this year we thought we should get together and have dinner at the RSL Club at 6pm (own cost) for those that can make it, prior to the Festival Welcome Dance with Anthony Pepers. With all of this, is it any wonder that the Corowa Festival of Dance continues to grow in popularity?? There are dancers coming from all over Australia and New Zealand! We have listened to the feedback dancers give us and we are certain that this will be afestival to remember, fabulous music, dancing, fun & friendship.
