F ROM THE PRINCIPAL ROM THE PRINCIPAL Welcome back to all members of our school community. I’m sure everyone enjoyed a restful break. Once again we head into another busy term with a range of activities noted on our term planner. These include a range of incursions and excursions including Wakakirri and Interschool Cross Country. TREE PLANTING TREE PLANTING Further to the information provided in our last Aveley Informer, around offsetting our carbon footprint, with students heading to Yarloop to plant trees, I have spoken to several students about their tree planting experience late last term. All students were extremely positive and enjoyed the opportunity to become involved in this project. They advised me that they would love to be a part of the program again next year and were ok leaving school at 8am and not getting back until around 5pm, although they were very tired by then. Thank you to the parents who supported our school with the planting. Students will be sharing some of their writing in our next newsletter. We have made the following changes to support our school family’s commitments. Commencing next week, students who arrive at school before 8.25am will be required to come through the front office and make their way directly to the library (with their bags). Students will be supervised in the library until they are released to make their way to classrooms at 8.30am. APS SCHOOL UNIFORM CAPS SCHOOL UNIFORM CHANGESHANGES

Following lengthy discussion in our school community around the Aveley Primary School uniform and possible changes to it, our School Board endorsed some adjustments to uniform requirements for our school at the last meeting. The formal grey shirt, long cargo pants and vest will be removed from our uniform requirements. We understand there will be a significant phase out period for this to occur. Additional information will be included with the next newsletter. Please contact the office in the interim if you

would like further clarification.

Lowes has supported this decision by reducing the cost of these items until stock runs out. Please see Lowes flier below for

more information.

BEHAVIOUR EXPECTATIOBEHAVIOUR EXPECTATIONSNS

Aveley Primary School formally commenced the implementation of our Behaviour Expectations Matrix this year. The matrix has had input from students, staff and parents and lists ‘behaviours of the fortnight’ to be explicitly taught (like English and Mathematics) in all classrooms throughout the year. Students receive a range of positive feedback from other students and staff

when demonstrating these behaviours both in the classroom and playground.

It is highly effective for parents to model, discuss and reinforce this positive behaviour outside of the school environment, so please take the time to do so. The behaviour focus for the first two weeks of this term is ‘Try Your Best’. Let’s continue to work

together to support our students.

INTERM SWIMMINGINTERM SWIMMING

A reminder that some classes commence interm swimming lessons next week. Families should have received a final letter outlining lesson times and a timetable is included in the newsletter. Please contact

classroom teachers for any further clarification.

Due to the refurbishment of the Altone Leisure Centre, this year’s lessons will take place at Ballajura Aquatic Centre, Corner of

Kingfisher Ave and Illawara Crescent, Ballajura.

THERAPY FOCUS ART COTHERAPY FOCUS ART COMPETITION 2017MPETITION 2017

Exciting news! Four finalists from Aveley PS were selected from over 4000 entrants from 57 schools across Western Australia in the ‘Help a Child Grow’ Therapy Focus Art Competition this year. There were 100 finalists in total, and from these

20 were selected to illustrate the soon to be published book ‘Ben Tries to Fly’.

The four finalists were Saja Al-Tamimi (Year 6), Marlee Milroy (Year 6), Yana Shah (Year 5), and Ally McDougall (Year 3). Finalists had their artwork displayed in the July school holidays at Westfield Innaloo, Westfield Whitfords and Westfield Carousel Shopping Centres. Saja, who has since left Aveley PS, has gone on to be selected as a winner, and her artwork will

be included in the book, ‘Ben Tries to Fly’.

Winners will receive a framed copy of their original artwork, a copy of the book, and a prize pack. They also have the opportunity to attend a fabulous book launch. Copies of ‘Ben Tries to Fly’ will be distributed to every primary school in West-

ern Australia.

All participants in the competition will receive a participation certificate.

MAKARU NAIDOC FESTIVAL MAKARU NAIDOC FESTIVAL

On Saturday, 1 July, three students from Aveley PS joined with Madjitil Moorna Choir as well as a choir from another school to sing two songs in the Noongar language. The songs were learnt last term from award winning Aboriginal singer/songwriters Candice Lorrae and Kristelle Kickett (The Merindas), who presented the Aboriginal Songs in Schools

Project incursion at Aveley PS.

Congratulations to Summer McDonnell, Caitlin Freestone and Victoria Luck who represented Aveley PS very well in an outstanding performance at Kalamunda Performing Arts Centre. All three girls received a complimentary bandanna to keep

as a memento of the occasion.

NAIDOC is the acronym for National Aboriginal & Islander Day Observation Committee, and NAIDOC events are generally

held in the first week of July each year to celebrate Aboriginal culture. This year’s theme was ‘Our Languages Matter’.

Half the year has passed and we still have some amazing fundraisers coming up this term. We have a Subway lunch,

Fathers Day Stall and a Free Dress Day to finish the term. We would love anyone available to help out for the Fathers Day

stall at the end of August to watch this space and contact Andrea with your availability.

CANTEENCANTEEN

The ladies in the canteen have been working hard over the holidays preparing a new exciting menu

which will be available next week so watch out on their Facebook page. Laura and Emma are always

looking for volunteers on Tuesdays and Thursdays so please contact them even if you can only spare

half a day or an hour in the afternoons to help with delivering lunches.
