What an enjoyable last week of term it has been. Easter Bunny ears have been bob-
bing around the classrooms and the mouth-watering aroma of melted chocolate,
accompanied by the delicious scrunch of cornflakes, has echoed throughout the de-
partment as little fingers have eagerly made Easter nest cakes, or in the case of 2L,
chocolate dipped banana penguins!
Roadl Dahl once said, “I have a passion for teaching children to become readers, to
become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn’t be daunting, they
should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific
advantage.”
This simple quote very much encapsulates how we feel about reading in Pre-Prep. To
develop a love of books in children, to see them completely immersed and turning
the pages in fascination, lost in their imaginations and compelled by curiosity, is
utterly rewarding. Whether curled up sharing books together, or reading alone,
keeping the children’s reading momentum going throughout the holidays, for just ten
minutes a day, is enormously valuable.
If you are planning a trip to the library and are keen to provide your child with some
new and exciting books this Easter, then do visit the Pre-Prep section of the school
website to view our booklists. In addition, the Book Trust website is an amazing
source of inspiration – you can view their ‘100 best Children’s Books’, their ‘Top Book
Choices for March’ or use their ‘Book Finder’ tool to search by age and theme to find
the perfect read. Visit www.booktrust.org.uk to discover more.
Taking the children’s reading enjoyment during the holidays one step further, I’ve
invited the children to send me a photograph of themselves enjoying a good book - I
will then create a book ‘shelfie’ display in celebration of all our little book worms!
On return after the holidays, the children may wear winter or summer uniform. De-
tails of the summer uniform can be located in the back of the school calendar and on
the website.
Finally, I would like to wish everyone a relaxing and fun-filled Easter break. I look
forward to hearing about the children’s holiday adventures when they return rested,
and full of enthusiasm, ready for an exciting and busy Summer Term.
