Coming to the Morin Gallery In a Mediterranian Mood Photographs by John Bice & Paintings & Illustrations by Laura Wooten

Abstract Oils by Sarah Lapp An Arts Center Satellite Exhibit at The Light Well RestaurantExhibit Dates: October 8 - November 28, 2015

Sarah Lapp grew up in small towns in Wyoming where her earliest connection to art as a means of communication was found in the illustrations of children’s books. The art that was present in her area of rural Wyoming was non diverse, strictly representational, and for the most part, its creation was a mystery as it lacked definitive brushstrokes, or signs of the hand. One exception to this was the bright and dynamic graffiti that traveled along on the box cars of the trains that constantly transversed the desolate Wyoming landscape. Sarah found an emotive quality and energy in them, and they stuck in her mind as haunting evi-dence that there were people living, creating and passionate about something in worlds that seemed so different from her own.

After other courses of study, Sarah chose to pursue her degree in art, and her work and world opened up as she revisited the parameters of visual communication that she had intuitively understood but not been able to command prior to her studies. During her pursuit, she was awarded numerous grants, awards and scholarships based on the merit and work ethic she applied, while raising three children. Sarah graduated in 2010 from the University of Mary Washington with a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art.

After several comings and goings from the area, Sarah has rooted her family in Fredericksburg Virginia, a place that shows the marks and wear of centuries of inhabitants, and boasts views of lives unfolding in the intimate and culturally supportive city.

“I connect to and process my world by creating my art. My work consists of two overlapping bodies, one strictly abstract, and one in which I introduce imagery and abstract it and the landscape that it exists in. As an intuitive painter, I bring forth completely non-representational pieces when I can reach into the deep corners of myself and find what is there. I use imagery as departure points for work when my world has piled up and blocked the conversations from those recesses where my intuition takes full control and I can’t readily reach what is stored there. Both forms lead me to resolution of what I am making sense of. Both connect bits and pieces of experience and life and allow me to reflect. I nurture both processes as they serve as tools to tenaciously create and make sense of life as it unfolds.”

Meet Author Hilary Holladay & Learn About Herbert Huncke: The Time Square Hustler Who Inspired Jack Kerouac and the Beat Generation

“Known simply as Huncke, he had an automatic entrée into New York City’s worst neighborhoods and best jazz clubs. His mandarin face was well known in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Harlem, and Queens. Cops knew him, as did thieves, prostitutes, and young authors hungry for characters they could write into their books. What Kerouac, Burroughs, and Ginsberg had seen through a glass darkly was what Huncke had lived and breathed. No matter how hard the others tried, they could never convey the beat essence with Huncke’s authority...” from HERBERT HUNCKE: The Times Square Hustler Who Inspired Jack Kerouac and the Beat Generation. Muse and mentor to Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and Jack Kerouac-who said of him, “Huncke is the greatest story teller I know, an absolute genius at it”- Herbert Huncke steps out of the shadow of his more illustrious peers in this absorbing and tender biography by Hilary Holladay. In this richly-layered portrait, the unsung bard of the streets emerges in all his tattered glory: his painful childhood and adolescent rebellion; run-ins with the law; adventures at sea and riding the rails; and later life in his beloved New York City where he became a legendary denizen and guide to the new bohemians eager to learn from the wily master.

Hilary Holladay is a writer and scholar of American literature who has published books on African American literature as well as the Beat Movement. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she earned her Ph.D., she has taught at James Madison University and the University of Massachusetts in Lowell, where she was founding director of the Jack and Stella Kerouac Center for American Studies. Her published works include Wild Blessings: The Poetry of Lucille Clifton, a poetry collection titled The Dreams of Mary Rowlandson, and most recently, Tipton, a novel. She has also co-edited with Robert

Holton, What’s Your Road Man? Critical Essays on Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. She lives in Orange County, Virginia. www.HilaryHolladay.com
