Feasts of Mary during the Church’s Year occur mostly on weekdays. In Australia we venerate Our Lady Help of Christians and Our Lady of the Southern Cross. Augustinians honour Our Lady under 4 titles - Good Counsel, Consolation, Grace and Childbirth. Each of us probably has a few favourite titles that keep us connected to Mary in prayer. Prayer brings closeness and so our prayer to Mary can help us draw close to her and her to us, for the sake of Christ. Her primary title that sheds light on all the others is Mother of God. Mary is the First Disciple, the Woman of Faith, the preeminent member of our race. Mary is one of us and journeys with the Church; our Marian devotion should reflect that. During her lifetime, she participated in the Paschal mystery (cf John 19:25-27) and the Pentecostal event (cf Acts 1:14), calming the disciples’ fears after Jesus’ death, and so is intimately involved with the young Church. Mary is worthy of the title, Mother of the Church A good starting point for our devotion to Mary is her humanity. Of course care is needed lest our imagination take over and turns Mary into what she is not. Mary is never remote from us. In fact the genuine earthiness of Mary’s life can expose us to the ‘holiness’ of every dimension of our lives too on our journey to ‘wholeness’. Meditation on Mary should include her conception and birth, her life at home with parents Joachim and Anne, her teenage romance with her beloved Joseph, her unexpected pregnancy and its challenges, life as a young mum, faithful wife, friend and companion to her Son until his death, and support for Jesus’ followers as the Church was born. While references to Mary in the Scriptures are limited, there are enough. A key Scriptural theme is Mary as ‘one who ponders’, prayerfully listening to the Word of God, lovingly accepting the Word, treasuring it in her heart. Mary is a powerful model of contemplative prayer and shows us what is possible for us in the many seasons of our lives. Among the ways to pray to and with Mary is the Rosary which the Church describes as a ‘biblically inspired prayer which is centered on contemplation of the salvific events of Christ’s life, and their close association with the Virgin Mother’ (cf Directory of Popular Piety and the Liturgy, p 141). While many recite the Rosary privately, it is an appropriate, community prayer too, sometimes described as the ‘Psalter of the Blessed Virgin Mary’. The Mysteries of the Rosary now number 20, with the addition of the Mysteries of Light or Luminous Mysteries by St John Paul II in 2002 which he describes as, ‘a meditation on certain particularly significant moments in Jesus’ public ministry.’ The Fifth Mystery of Light is the Institution of the Eucharist. As we break open God’s Word at Mass, we can often become more deeply aware of the place of Mary in the life of Jesus – Mary the one who prays, the ‘one who ponders’ on God’s Word as we are called to do. With her we participate in the Paschal Mystery. PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE – ‘October – Month of the Rosary!’

Dear Friends,

Our Lady’s titles number in the hundreds and reflect aspects of God’s plan for her, her personal gifts and qualities, locations of her apparitions, and countries entrusted to her care.

Mary is worthy of the title, Mother of the Church

A good starting point for our devotion to Mary is her humanity.

'Where I’m terrified by what I am for you, I am given comfort by what I am with you. For you I

am a bishop, with you, after all, I am a Christian. The first is the name of an office undertaken, the second a name of grace; that one means danger, this one salvation. I take my rest in the

marvellous benefit conferred on all of us in common.' - Sermon 340
