M o n t h .
There is a
good rea-
son why we remind ourselves of
the importance of membership
early in every Rotary year: be-
cause the job of growing our
membership is one that we can
never begin too soon. It is also a
job that we can never stop
working on. In order to keep
serving, Rotary always needs to
be growing!
We have talked for many years
about the importance of the
family of Rotary. In this Rotary
year, I want to make not just the
family of Rotary, but our own
Rotary families, a priority in
our membership. After 37 years
of following me in Rotary, my
wife, Corinna, finally became a
Rotarian last year. We attended
the chartering of a new club in
Taiwan together, and she said,
"It's time for me to become a
Rotarian too!" So she joined
that club. And soon, so did a lot
of other people. Now that club
has 102 members, and it's the
second-largest club in Taiwan.
Inviting our spouses into Rotary
isn't just about getting our num-
bers up. It addresses the reality
that Rotary still has far more
men as members than it does
women, and that is something
we need to work on. When we
bring more women into Rotary,
our clubs become more appeal-
ing to prospective female mem-
bers – and become more pro-
ductive as well.
This year we are going to have
something new in Rotary: a
membership support team pin.
This means that if you invite a

I would like
to convey

helped most of us to rejuvenate,
our thoughts and prayers go to
the families and friends of those
innocent lives lost in the MH17
tragedy. We hope and pray that
the Almighty would give them
the strength to withstand this
tragedy and the loss of their
loved ones.
August is Membership and

I have just completed my

Installation functions and
events of many Rotary Clubs
in our District.

Membership retention is important although our mem-
bership turnover is not that critical. We still need to do
our best to ensure members have the interest to stay
and build on solidarity and good fellowship at every
club meeting.
This is the second month of the publication of our Is-
lander and we would certainly like to see more contri-
butions from the members to provide some articles of
interest to the club . The Bulletin Committee appreci-
ates members for their contributions, but we feel
more members can do more to bring forth improve-
ment for our own reading pleasure.
This August issue will have some more photographs
of the Charity Fine Dining Event, The District Inter-
act Quiz, the induction of a new member and also
some pictures of speakers in Club Meetings and also
a list of Anniversaries and Birthdays of our Rotary
Family in August .
August is Rotary Membership
Extension and Retention month.
Since the new Rotary year has
just started, it is also a time to
renew our energy to give the
club a new lease of life. One of
the ways is for the Board
members themselves to take the
lead to bring new members into
the club during their year of
office.
I am glad President William Wee himself had fulfilled
his promise by inducting Mr. Stephan Tan, as a
member of the club . Let us hope there will be more
from the Board members and I am also encouraging
members of the club to do the same. Remember by
doing so we are also helping the District Governor of
District 3300, to fulfill the District Goal on Member-
ship.
With the help and assistance of Com-
munications Committee, we have been
able to keep our members posted imme-
diately, through the social media, on the
Governor’s visit together with other
official functions and activities in the
District. I must acknowledge my appre-
ciation and thanks to all My Best Class
Presidents and the members, for the as-
sistance and the warm hospitality which
I received from all Clubs. You indeed
are helping me to “Light Up Rotary.”
I commenced my official Club Visits to
Clubs in August and by the time this
Monthly Governor’s Newsletter reaches
you, I am sure I would have visited at
least six to eight Clubs. I have wit-
nessed a number of Inductions during
the Installation Ceremonies. This is a
good start. Please encourage your
friends and families to join Rotary. I
hope to be witnessing more during my
many official Club visits. My goal is to
reach a total Membership of 2000 dur-
ing our Rotary Year and RI President
Gary Huang wants to take our Global
membership to 1.3 million. My friends,
I have no doubt that if each one of us
makes a commitment of bringing in one
new member, we would be able to
achieve our goal. I am told that our
Membership Growth and Retention
Committee has set some goals towards
Membership Growth. We are hoping to
form at least three New Clubs. There is
also possibility of setting up an E-Club.
Perhaps to some of our Rotary Spouses
may find the E-Club a good alternative
to join. While we are emphasizing our
Membership Growth, please remember
that we would also wish to retain our
existing members.
I am also reminded of the pledge that all
of us take, when we are inducted into
Rotary. “While we can just accept you
as a member of the Rotary Club, only
you can make yourself a Rotarian.”
With this, my Rotary friends, I would
urge you all to become “Rotarians” by
your own actions, words and deeds by
living up to the “4 Way Test.”
I am also pleased to inform that most
of our District Projects such as the
Essay Writing Competition, Rotary
Kasih, and Interact Quiz have all
taken off the ground. The Essay
Writing Competition was officially
launched by YB. P Kamalanathan,
Deputy Minister of Education on 10th
August 2014 in conjunction with the
3 Pillars Seminar.
We are also working hard to launch
“Our Journey Together… Rotary
D3300 Story” Coffee Table Book
project soon. I am hoping to receive
100% support from all Rotary Clubs
in our District Projects.
I am confident that with the support
of all Clubs, Rotarians and Friends of
Rotary, we will indeed “Light Up
Rotary”
In Rotary Service,
Kirenjit Kaur,
District Governor
On 2nd August 2014, The I-QUIZ 2014, for the
Interact Clubs of the Northern Region of Ma-
laysia, was held at SENTRAL College
Penang. It was based on general knowledge
and a wide range of subjects from serious
business to trivial stuff covering subjects like
Geography, History, Science, Films, Music
and Sports. Dr. Nagiah Ramasamy of Rotary
Club of Bandar Sunway Rotary International
District 3300, Mr. Shan Sundram, the Organiz-
ing Chairman and also many other Rotarians
were on hand to assist the smooth running of
the event which was organized by the Rotary
Club of Butterworth and sponsored by SEN-
TRAL College.
The IQUIZ event is a Rotary District 3300
event and was started in 2007 in Kuala Lum-
pur, and this year will be its 7th edition and in
the Northern Region, it will be its first. This first
general knowledge quiz which was held in
SENTRAL College, is meant to promote to
young people especially the young Interactors
the cause of Rotary, Rotaract and Interact, in
addition to instilling good values & ethics, in
order to promote healthy competition and to
enhance English language skills.
Since its inception 7 years ago, this competi-
tion has become a much looked-forward-to
event for our young Interactors. This is clearly
shown by the increasing number of teams par-
ticipating each year. In fact, this regional com-
petition saw 75 teams vying for the top posi-
tions. Other regional events were also held in
Selangor, Sarawak, Sabah, Johor and Melaka.
The First I-QUIZ in SENTRAL College gave the
Interactors in Penang the opportunity not only
to test their knowledge in a variety of general
topics, including on Malaysia, Rotary and Inter-
act. Winners at the Northern region level were
awarded full and partial tuition scholarships
worth a total of RM145,000 to pursue their di-
ploma studies at SENTRAL College, a Chal-
lenge Trophy and many attractive prizes for the
participants and their schools.
The champions were the Eureka Team from
SMK Tinggi Bukit Mertajam, whilst the 1st run-
ners-up were the MBS Team from Methodist
Boys’ School and in third place was Erudite
Team from SMK Convent Green Lane; fourth
place went to Bingo! Team from SMJK Keat
Hwa and fifth place was the Ruby Team from
SMK Convent Bukit Mertajam and in sixth place
was Hello Team from SMJK Heng Ee.
President William Wee proposed Stephen Tan Kheng Siong
and Vice Chairman Stephen Soon introduced Stephen Tan
during the induction. Induction and oath taking was conducted
by President William Wee.
Stephen Tan who is 47 yrs old was born in Ipoh, Perak. He
completed his education at Chung Ling High School, Penang.

in the field of Mass Communication, he went into Advertis-
ing. Later he switched to IT and the Digital Industry.
Now he has moved on to the Project Sales and Management
segment for the past 10 years.

to get himself very much involved in social and community
work. His hobbies are water sports, reading and jogging. Wel-
come to the club, Stephen.
“LIFE AND EXPERIENCES IN
PERTH, AUSTRALIA” BY
EX-ROTARIAN LLOYD YEOH
ON 20TH AUGUST 2014
AT TRADERS HOTEL PENANG
Ex-Rotarian Lloyd Yeoh and his family
migrated to Perth, Australia in 2006.
His reason for migration was for the
education of his 2 daughters. As new
migrants, they were given government
assistance to start a new life including
help from “CentreLink” and
“Medicare”. The Local State Govern-
ment assisted them when they bought
their 1st home.
His wife, Joanne, and himself have
been very active raising funds for local
charities including “Lifeline” (Anti-
Suicide Help Line) and Harry Perkins
Institute of Medical Research
(focussing on breast and ovarian cancer
research for Western Australians).
Both he and his wife participated in a
Seven-Day 170km pilgrim walk from
Perth to New Norcia in late August last
year. Together with 4 other friends, they
raised above A$20,000/-.
They walked 60km in 2 days around Perth
this March for “A Weekend to End
Women’s Cancers”. The total collection
was @ A$2.2 million between 845 walk-
ers.
Even though Lloyd is not a Rotarian now,
he is a Rotarian at heart. He said he will
join Rotary again later when he is more
stabilised financially. He is now commit-
ted to finance both his daughters’ educa-
tion.
Thank you, Lloyd for sharing your life
experiences with us. You will always
remain a Rotarian at heart.
